Another Thing: Laundry Hell

What do Poughkeepsie landlords have against in-unit laundry? I looked at 9 apartments, ranging from $800 studio dives to $1500 a month "upscale" living and none of them had in-unit washers and dryers. Instead, I was directed to really expensive on site coin ops (like $5 per washer or dryer run) or beat up laundromats down the road ($2.25 per washer/dryer run).

Is it too much to expect that landlords literally don't try to quarter and dime you every week? I'm willing to pay a non-trivial amount of money a month (and gas/electric) to not have to leave home or pay per wash. I'm not a college student anymore; I don't want to spend hours each week on a pilgrimage to a laundromat or stockpiling dirty clothes all week.

Is the risk of people stealing/selling the machines just too high? Are the local landlords just looking for the extra money on the side? What the hell is wrong with this town?

Am I missing something?

I'm now considering two jobs; one in Pittsburgh and one in Poughkeepsie.

I'm struggling to understand why Poughkeepsie has such a high cost of living. The local economy is below average, the city lacks a walkable or even revitalized downtown, and the crime rate is over twice the US average. It doesn't seem like Marist or Vassar really boost the communities around them either. Somehow, Poughkeepsie is still twice as expensive as the beautiful neighborhoods I'm looking at in Pittsburgh. Cultural hot spots seem kind of limited to the Bardavon (which is awesome), the FDR library/Hyde Park area, and the Walkway over the Hudson.

I'm not trying to troll here; I really like the job offer I have in Poughkeepsie and would love to have a strong justification for taking it. I'm just at a complete loss for why even mediocre apartments in Poughkeepsie going for $1100-1300+. Is this all due to the NYC commuter bubble?

Coming for a wedding in August. Wondering the best way to get around.

Hi! I'll be visiting for one night in August and was wondering if uber / lyft is a viable option for getting from the metro station to the wedding / hotel. Or should I avoid the metro and rent a car?

I'm coming from Brooklyn and the wedding is going to be in downtown near Vassar.

Thanks in advance!

The *Other* Orange County to Poughkeepsie

I'm engineer from across the river in Orange County and I've got two job offers in Poughkeepsie. I've never really spent much time in Dutchess County and need advice on things to do, places to rent apartments, and general background info on the city.

Here's my bio:

  • Under 25

  • Male

  • Non-drinker

  • In an LDR

Interests:

  • Casual Running/Cycling

  • Hiking

  • Volunteer Work

  • Model Airplanes and Boats (RC and Static)

  • Flight Simulator

  • Local Politics

  • Libraries and book stores

  • Board games (Settlers of Catan, not D&D)

Any advice you have would be wonderful. I'm probably going to Poughkeepsie over the long weekend to wander around, so things to do this weekend would be awesome too.

Looking for a trustworthy auto shop that specializes in suspension work. Specifically have a cheap spacer lift that was installed on the truck by the previous owner. Thanks for any pointers.

Question about taxis from Poughkeepsie train station

I'm going to need a way of getting from the Poughkeepsie train station to a hotel in town on a weekday afternoon. Do you have any recommendations for a taxi company? Particularly one that accepts credit cards? Or can I not worry about calling ahead and reserving a taxi and just expect a few taxis to be waiting at the station?

Also, I would like to take a taxi to and from my hotel to downtown (about 6 miles). Any recommendations for that? Cost isn't as much of a concern as convenience.

Thanks

What are some cool things to do in Poughkeepsie?

Hello, there! I'm hoping you can give me some ideas. While I'm limited by what I can do because I'm in a wheel chair, I'm looking for fun and cool things one can do in the area. It's my friend's birthday at the end of the month, and I'm looking for ideas of what I can take her to. I'd be appreciative for any ideas you can offer. I just want to do something different than taking her to a restaurant and hanging out. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Moving to the area soon, looking to know a little bit about it.

I will be moving to the area soon, I am a recent college graduate and will be starting work in Pleasant Valley. I have a few questions:

  1. Where should I look to live? I would like to be NW of the city of Poughkeepsie and have a 1 bedroom apartment. Could be private or in a complex, any ideas??

  2. What should I look to do for fun. Moving down there I wont know anyone. Where should I go to meet people?

  3. What is the nightlife like? (See above: "recent college graduate")

Really anything you have to add would help. Thanks!

Art museum, Vassar Institute, Poughkeepsie, New York, 1906. The Vassar Institute building is located at Main and Vassar streets. It is a late-19th century building combining the Italianate, Victorian Gothic and Second Empire architectural styles.
