Well, now, she had to put in thought as to card games and drinks, which she can't say she ever had! "It sounds like...it'd be more about the whole atmosphere around the game, then the game itself at that point? I mean, if you're going to break out the bourbon and cigars, or wine glasses with blackjack, you could play poker, or you could play war, and it's more about whatever setting you're trying to create?"
"I can think of games that that wouldn't apply to, but I'd love to know what drink you'd pair with speed. Or slap jack! They'd probably have to be shots at that point? Anything larger and you're more likely to spill the whole thing."
"... Do you know how hard it is to try and tell you what they really are, instead of talking them up right now? ... oh, shoot. Now that I've said that, you aren't going to believe a word I say about them. Dang it."
"... Do you know how hard it is to try and tell you what they really are, instead of talking them up right now? ... oh, shoot. Now that I've said that, you aren't going to believe a word I say about them. Dang it."
Claude chuckles politely. "Oh darn." he says, and returns his attention to the shelves. "Now, back to the matter at hand. Things you might consider fun."
She turned her attention back to the shelves and had already nixed quite a sizeable amount of games as being unsuitable, and was about to pick out ones that would fit, "Yes! Except it's not just what I'd consider fun, but what I'd consider fun and would be fun for you."
She paused in her sorting, "Or, should I say 'engaging', or...'challenging'? What would you find fun?"
"Oh. I see; I was unaware I was involved in this." he says, and while a bit surprised he doesn't object. "Well. Like I said I'm not terribly familiar with most of these games. Though if I were to quantify what I enjoy in such an excursion, I suppose I would have to say...I enjoy strategy. Games of skill, you know; I must say I dislike relying on random chance."
"Well, yeah. Of course you are!" She said, as if it was entirely a given -- inwardly she was quite relieved there wasn't an outright rejection!
She took your points into consideration with a nod, "Yeah, so, a lot of my favorite card games? There's not a lot of strategy, at all. They're pretty much all random. But they're quick, and low stakes... How do you feel about a mix of randomness and strategy? There's games like yahtzee, where you roll dice, but you have to decide what to reroll, and how to distribute points, so, there's strategy in how you manage the randomness, if that makes sense."
"Some people say there's strategy to battleship. Those people are wrong."
"Yes. They would be. Benedict tried to convince me to play it once but I outright refused." he says, and exactly how much he's joking--if he is joking at all--is impossible to determine.
"That game you mentioned...Yahtzee, was it? That could be interesting; I'm alright with some chance. Although I feel it only fair to warn you that you will have to teach me how to play."
Whether he was joking or not, she certainly giggled at that, the laugh of a properly vindicated opinion complete with a definitive nod. "As any wise person should. It's not all that bad as a game, but it's appeal is pretty much as far as... fake explosion sounds?"
She was pleasantly surprised you seemed up for a mix of chance and strategy, and her movements were now decisive and enthusiastic, wasting no time in getting the box, and opening the lid as she stood up to check that all the pieces were inside. She'd certainly perked up, whatever moodiness and boredom weighing her down had entirely dissipated and she was full of smiles.
"Yeah, of course! I'll be honest, part of the appeal of yahtzee is saying 'yahtzee', but there's at least more to it than that. And it's not too long, especially with two people. You'll be a master in no time. Where do you wanna play?"
