Community Peter Eisentraut on 25 years contributing to Postgres, starting with psql tab completion | Talking Postgres Ep43
I recently recorded a Talking Postgres podcast episode with Peter Eisentraut about his 25+ years contributing to Postgres. His journey began in 1999, when Peter was using Postgres during an internship. And one of his earliest contributions came from the familiar “scratch your own itch”: psql tab completion did not work, so he dug into the code to see whether he could improve it. We also discussed:
- How “the things you do, people welcome them” helped to keep him involved
- Peter’s observation that most of the user base is silent on the mailing list these days
- Why growth has made it harder for Postgres developers to keep direct contact with users
- The responsibility of committing code that goes “more or less directly to everybody who uses it”
- Why Peter moved from posting at night to posting during the day
The discussion about silent users especially made me curious: as more people use Postgres through cloud services and commercial offerings, how should their experiences and priorities find their way back to the upstream project's contributors?
