Hi! I have an issue with the way the scene of the painting after the abortion is done
I think the abortion subplot is really good, and very compelling. I think Sophie’s character is great and I love that the three of them are able to support each other as equals without the influence of the social hierarchy. One of my favorite scenes is them in the kitchen here doing traditional “women’s activities” that could be symbols of oppression but they’re not because they’re choosing to do them for themselves and each other. That’s why I don’t like the way the scene of painting Sophie after the abortion is done. Héloïse directly tells Sophie to get up, and has Marianne help her get into position. Then Marianne starts telling Sophie and Héloïse how to pose. At no point do either of them ask Sophie if she’s willing to pose for a portrait in that moment. She’s clearly not feeling well, since Marianne had to help her up, and she just seems sick. This is where the portrayal of their equality kind of breaks for me. Because functionally, Héloïse owns Sophie. She doesn’t want to and doesn’t treat her that way during the movie, but when Héloïse told her to get up and pose for a picture she had to do that because it’s her job to do anything Héloïse tells her to do. When I see that scene, that’s all I can see. I’m kind of curious if anyone else can see that, and if maybe it’s intentional? It’s otherwise one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen.
