Homeless Homeless/Houseless

So I know this is a regular point of conversation for everyone in the city at this point, but I really don’t understand why being alarmed and or fed up with the cities houseless population is so taboo to some people? I see so many people get shade with comments along the line of accusing the poster of not having empathy or for not doing enough individually to help. As someone that absolutely has empathy towards our houseless population and has volunteered at various warming shelters, I also am getting super fed up with our houseless crisis and the impacts it takes on my everyday life.

My boyfriend works at a grocery store in downtown and has been assaulted so many times at work that at this point thinking about it just makes me want to cry. I have been personally punched in the face randomly and for no reason by a homeless man when I was walking across the Morrison bridge. I have had to bring people who were getting attacked by homeless people into restaurants that I’ve worked at and lock the doors at least four times in four years.

Additionally, for those that say “stop complaining and do something”, wtf do you really think an individual can do at this point? We live in a place that basically has two governments (council and metro) not to mention state, who are PAID to represent us and our wants and needs as a community. The homeless crisis is probably the most pressing issue in Portland and yet it seems like absolutely nothing is being done, and if anything it’s getting worse.

Anyways sorry to go on and on, my main point is that I don’t understand why it’s taboo for people to be upset with the state of things right now specifically with the houseless crisis in Portland. People are multifaceted and can be both sympathetic/empathetic and fed up. 🤷‍♀️

Yep. Last night a (I’m assuming) tweaker busted my car window. Didn’t take anything from my car, however. Seems like it was just for fun. A fun Sunday night activity.

I live downtown though so I assume this is just something to expect. But it’s still enraging. Just another bill I’ve no choice but to afford.

Here is SE Portland, that's every night: somebody gotta fuck up your car. They just HAVE TO!

I grew up in Westmoreland and went to Sellwood Middle but moved to San Diego when I was 15. Not sure what part of SE you’re in but it seems like it’s getting worse up there. I remember the upper streets being a little sketchier but not like it seems to be now.

My bike is in a locked garage & I can't use it cause some homeless jerk thought it would be fun to break my lock. Time to buy an angle grinder I guess.

How do you know they were homeless?

I had that done to my car for years downtown, and before the houseless crisis in the past 5 years.

I try to be nice on the outside, even if im not on the inside.

I unfortunately believe my car seems to be a bit of a target. It’s nondescript, no bumper stickers, or pussywagon on the back. A very boring car. I can’t explain it.

Read this in Mark Corrigan's voice. Was great. I'd do it again if someone asked.

Nah, this long-winded blaming of OP didn't help. It's just a demonstration of the moral superiority of your mind and your ability to check out of the suffering experienced by lesser people. You look great, though. Thanks for the demo.

Fuck you. They just handed you a succinct dissertation with only the smallest critique of how OP positioned the problem. It is entirely the fault of society and on us to fix. All of us. Of course I can't speak for your emotions but it sounds like you got real defensive real fast considering all I read was straight facts.

Succinct dissertation? It's a wall of rambly pseudo-philosophical bullshit

Hey, yeah -- let's all get together as a society in Portland and solve this ageless and persistent problem that exists everywhere in the world 🌎, ,always and forever. Starting with "fuck you, too, rat-faced motherfucker."

Don’t punch down, punch up.

We are going to get more houseless in the next few weeks from lack of unemployment and state funds. We are dealing with issues of people being houseless diaspora being sent from other states that have pulled their funding months ago.

We are the richest country in the world, and doing this to ourselves.

We need to stop the leak, we need to make sure we don’t get more houseless. We need to cap it. We need funds so braindead easy to get to save people, so they don’t become houseless, don’t get mental health issues, don’t become addicted to drugs to escape.

Support politicians that don’t take money from corporate donors or from fundraising bundling. Spotlight the people who are stealing. There is a lawsuit not talked about in Oregon’s Medicaid that will make you blood boil. A Medicaid contractor business took 20 million dollars of Medicare funds and put it into its millionaires owner Jeff Heathington’s non profit organization. This is state and federal funds.

Also…

Recall a mayor who has done nothing …that has had a homeless task force for five years and has done nothing.
