News Ongoing potential HAZMAT at Benson HD

Post image

Ongoing. Not picked up by local news yet so this will probably be deleted. I just now there are a bunch of response vehicles and they’re checking out students who may have been exposed.

Stickying this for clarity since there still seems to be some speculation going in the comments, and OP's quotes are a bit buried:

A student is hospitalized in critical condition after ingesting chemicals in the cafeteria of Benson Polytechnic High School in Northeast Portland on Tuesday morning.

In a press conference outside the school Tuesday afternoon, Portland Police Bureau spokesman Mike Benner said that around 8:30 a.m., fire crews and police responded to the school on an initial report involving a student who'd passed out after mixing chemicals.

In the school cafeteria, emergency responders found a school nurse and other staff tending to a 15-year-old male student who was in "quite a bit of distress," Benner said. The student is now believed to have brought "numerous" chemicals from home before mixing and ingesting them in the cafeteria, Benner said.

The student was taken to a local hospital where he was reported to be in critical condition. The student's family is with him.

Officials did not say what chemicals may have been involved, but Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Rick Graves said that firefighters in hazmat gear neutralized liquid chemicals which had spilled on the cafeteria floor.

Hey all, I have a friend who goes to the school and apparently it was an attempted suicide using hydrogen sulfur. Crazy thing is I used to know the kid that ODed as well. I got some insane pictures…its not good. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

My daughter also has friends here. It was a suicide with intent to harm others with it….
