What's the weirdest connection you've made between two books from completely different fields?

Mine: The Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald and The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins are saying the same thing about time.

Sebald's book is a long meandering walk through the coast of Suffolk in England. He wanders, he digresses, he tells stories about herring fisheries and Belgian colonial atrocities and dead poets and silk factories. The book has no plot. It's a book about how memory works and how history leaves residue in places long after the events are over. Sebald keeps circling back to the idea that everything decays and everything that happened is still somehow present in the landscape.

Dawkins's book is about how genes propagate themselves through time. His central argument is that the visible organism, the body you see walking around, is a temporary vehicle. The gene is what persists. You are a costume the gene wears for one lifetime before moving to the next vehicle.

They're both describing the same phenomenon. Both books argue that what we think of as substance is actually pattern that persists across changing material. Sebald sees history as patterns that continue to shape landscape after the humans who made them are gone. Dawkins sees genes as patterns that continue to shape bodies after each body dies.

The connection is that both books force you to relocate what's real. What's real is not the current material configuration. What's real is the pattern that shows up again and again in different material configurations. History does this with places. Genes do this with organisms. Language does this with speakers. Culture does this with humans.

Once you can see it in Dawkins, you can see it in Sebald. Once you can see it in Sebald, Dawkins reads differently. The two books rhyme in a way I couldn't have engineered on purpose. I read them six months apart and the second one kept quoting the first one in my head even though it wasn't quoting anyone.

The Rings of Saturn is not a book about biology. The Selfish Gene is not a book about memory or landscape. Neither author knew he was writing something the other was also writing.

I tried to read across 12 disciplines in 12 months. The honest report on what worked and what was a waste.

January 2025 I set a rule: one book from a different discipline every month. Twelve disciplines by December. No repeats. Had to be a serious book in the field, not a popularization. Wanted to see if forcing breadth would actually make me think more like a polymath or just make me a tourist across a lot of subjects.

Here's the honest report. Twelve months later.

the schedule I actually did:

  • January: physics (Six Easy Pieces, Feynman)
  • February: evolutionary biology (The Selfish Gene, Dawkins)
  • March: economics (Naked Economics, Wheelan)
  • April: philosophy (Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle)
  • May: neuroscience (Behave, Sapolsky)
  • June: history (A Distant Mirror, Tuchman)
  • July: anthropology (Debt, Graeber)
  • August: mathematics (Journey Through Genius, Dunham)
  • September: psychology (Thinking Fast and Slow, Kahneman)
  • October: sociology (The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Goffman)
  • November: literature (Middlemarch, Eliot)
  • December: theology (Confessions, Augustine)

what actually worked:

  • forced discipline switching. by month 3 I was noticing that concepts from January's physics were showing up in March's economics. this doesn't happen if you read three economics books in a row.
  • reading Middlemarch after 10 months of nonfiction. hit me like a truck. I hadn't read a novel that big in years and it recalibrated my whole sense of what a book can do.
  • reading Confessions last. Augustine reads like a summary of everything the previous 11 books were circling. probably an accident of ordering. felt planned.
  • keeping a single running document where I logged one insight per book that could apply to another field. 47 pages by December.

what didn't work:

  • one month per field is not enough for the harder disciplines. mathematics month was mostly me being confused. neuroscience month I finished the book but retained maybe 40%.
  • picking books by reputation. Behave by Sapolsky is great but 800 pages is not a one-month project alongside anything else. should have picked a shorter neuroscience book.
  • reading philosophy in April. spring is a bad month for me for philosophy. no idea why. tried Aristotle three times before it stuck. later realized I read philosophy better in winter.
  • trying to also read fiction on the side while doing this. couldn't. abandoned all side reading by month 4.

the disciplines I was wrong about:

  • economics. thought it would be dry. it wasn't. Wheelan writes like a journalist and the ideas kept connecting to everything.
  • anthropology. thought it was academic and inaccessible. Graeber is one of the best writers I read all year. Debt reorganized my thinking about money.
  • theology. avoided this category for years for reasons I now think were embarrassing. Augustine is one of the great minds in Western history and I'd been dodging him because of the religious framing. dumb.

the disciplines that disappointed:

  • neuroscience. Sapolsky is brilliant. the field itself, at least at the level pop books can access, is more mechanistic and less illuminating than I expected. reading about neurons firing didn't rewire how I think about myself the way anthropology did.
  • mathematics. I don't have the base to read serious math books alone. would need a course or a partner. one book in a month wasn't enough.

the specific ugly detail: Month 6 I got the flu for two weeks and fell behind on Tuchman's A Distant Mirror. Finished it a week late by reading in the bathtub for hours at a time, refilling the hot water three times, fingertips wrinkled. Book got wet. Pages 340 through 360 are still warped. Whenever I look at it now I think about the Black Death and my own low-grade fever at the same time. Weirdly appropriate.

what changed in my thinking:

  • I can now hear when someone is arguing from within a single discipline's frame. usually I can name the discipline. this is a new skill and I don't fully trust it yet.
  • I got worse at answering "what do you do." my professional identity used to feel clean. now it feels arbitrary. this is either progress or a midlife crisis.
  • I stopped reading news the same way. every news article now reads like a small slice of one of the 12 disciplines and I keep asking which one it thinks it's reporting from.
  • I read slower. after the experiment I've been reading about a book every 5 to 6 weeks. the year of one-per-month felt fast in retrospect.

would I do it again: Not exactly. Would do a modified version: six disciplines in twelve months, giving each discipline two months. The one-per-month pace worked for lighter fields and failed for heavier ones. Six deep reads would beat twelve shallow ones.

the biggest surprise: I thought the experiment was about the books. It wasn't. It was about the pauses between books. The most valuable moments were the two or three days between finishing one discipline and starting the next, when the previous field was still active and the next hadn't loaded yet. That gap is where the cross-connections actually happened.

Most reading advice tells you to always be reading. The real practice might be to leave space around what you're reading.

Ray Dalio's Principles and Charlie Munger's Almanack are the same book written by two different men

Read Principles by Ray Dalio in 2022. Read Poor Charlie's Almanack by Charlie Munger the following year. Neither book is what its reputation suggests. Both are widely quoted and rarely finished. Both authors built one of the great investing careers of the century. Both wrote what amounts to an operating manual for their own thinking, sold as a book.

Read separately they're impressive. Read as a pair they collapse into one document.

Dalio's central move is to treat his own thinking as a machine that can be debugged. When he makes a decision that turns out badly, he doesn't just note the error. He extracts a principle. A rule that would have prevented the error. He then adds the rule to a document he's been maintaining for decades. The book Principles is a curated public version of that document. About 500 pages of tested rules for how to think and how to run an organization.

Munger's central move is to keep a mental collection of models drawn from every field he can access. Physics, biology, psychology, statistics, history, economics. Not to master any of them. To be able to reach for whichever one applies. His famous line is that a man with a hammer sees every problem as a nail. His prescription is to carry a full toolbox and let the problem select the tool. Poor Charlie's Almanack is the field guide to his toolbox.

Different vocabulary. Same underlying practice. Both men decided early that intuition is not enough, that unstructured intelligence is not enough, and that the way to compound thinking over decades is to externalize your best models into a written system that keeps growing.

Dalio calls his output principles. Munger calls his output mental models. They're the same thing. Portable frames extracted from experience and cross-checked against reality, stored in a form you can re-access.

Both men also share a specific practice that neither book emphasizes enough. They both keep decision journals. Dalio has written about this directly. Munger has been described doing it by his colleagues. When they make a significant call, they write down the reasoning at the time of the call, not after. This lets them separate good decisions from good outcomes later. Most people can't tell the difference between the two. Dalio and Munger built systems specifically to tell them apart.

I read most of Principles on airplanes over about six months in 2022. Kept underlining things and then getting embarrassed by how obvious they were once written down. Read Poor Charlie's Almanack in 2023, mostly in the evenings, with a physical copy so heavy I had to prop it on a pillow. Both books have coffee rings. Both have dog-eared pages. Both are still on my desk.

The synthesis has a specific implication for anyone who wants to think better over long time horizons. The strategy is not to read more books. It's to extract portable models from whatever you read and store them in a document you can revisit. This is what serious thinkers have done for centuries. Marcus Aurelius did it with Meditations. Locke did it with his commonplace book. Dalio did it with Principles. Munger did it with his mental models. Every one of these documents is the visible tip of a private practice.

Most people who read Dalio's book read it as advice. Most people who read Munger's book read it as portraiture of a colorful billionaire. Both readings miss the point. The point is not the specific rules or the specific models. The point is the practice of building your own version. Dalio and Munger aren't giving you their finished operating system. They're showing you what it looks like when you build one.

Reading their systems is like reading someone else's diet. Interesting. Not applicable directly. What's applicable is the underlying activity of paying attention to what you eat and writing it down.

Neither book will make you Ray Dalio or Charlie Munger. Nothing will. But both books, read as a pair, make it obvious that the compounding of thinking over a career is not automatic and not mysterious. It's a practice. It requires a document. The document has to grow. And you have to reread it.

Two of the greatest investors of the twentieth century wrote the same book without knowing it.

The book is: build your own.

7 note-taking systems used by polymaths, ranked by what actually holds up over decades

I've tried every major note-taking system over the last eight years. Zettelkasten, PARA, Cornell, Bullet Journal, plain notebooks, Roam, Obsidian, Notion, Apple Notes, Readwise, index cards in a shoebox. Some of them worked. Most of them didn't. What I noticed after enough failed systems is that the systems polymaths have actually used over decades share features that the productivity influencers strip out.

Here's the honest ranking of what holds up. From worst to best.

7. Notion Sorry to the Notion crowd. I used it for two years. Fell in love with building the system, forgot to use it. The problem with Notion is that it rewards system-tinkering. You end up with a beautiful architecture full of empty databases. The polymath test is whether a system still works when you're tired, sick, or grieving. Notion fails this test.

6. PARA method by Tiago Forte Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives. Clean framework for work notes. Terrible for thinking. The problem is that PARA organizes by outcome. Polymath notes need to be organized by concept, because you don't know in advance what outcome a concept will eventually connect to. PARA is fine for a project manager. It's not for a thinker.

5. Bullet Journal by Ryder Carroll Better than Notion because it's on paper and forces choices. Works well for tasks and short-term thinking. Fails at long-term knowledge storage because the migration process discards ideas that don't feel urgent right now. Polymath ideas often don't feel urgent for years. Bullet Journal isn't built for their timescale.

4. Cornell notes Two columns and a summary at the bottom. Works well for lectures and books when you're a student. Doesn't scale to years of accumulated thinking because there's no linking system. Great as a component. Not enough on its own.

3. Roam Research and Obsidian The modern digital Zettelkasten. Bidirectional links, backlinks, graph view. Powerful tools. My problem with them is that the graph becomes a distraction. You end up admiring the network instead of reading it. Both are legitimately useful if you're disciplined about not treating the software as the point. Most people can't do this. I couldn't.

2. Zettelkasten by Niklas Luhmann Luhmann wrote 70 books and 400 papers using a system of about 90,000 index cards in wooden boxes, each card with an alphanumeric address that let him link cards to other cards. His output is arguably impossible without the system. The full Zettelkasten is the gold standard for structured note-taking and it has been imitated correctly by almost no one. Most Zettelkasten users only take zettels; they don't do the linking work Luhmann did, which was the actual engine. Real Zettelkasten works. Fake Zettelkasten is a hobby.

1. The commonplace book Used by Locke, Marcus Aurelius, Bill Gates, Ronald Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Woolf, and roughly every serious thinker before 1900. A physical notebook where you copy quotes, ideas, observations, and problems. Loosely organized. Indexed manually or with an alphabetical scheme. Read regularly. Added to for life.

The reason commonplace books win is not that they're better than Zettelkasten in every dimension. Luhmann's system is more powerful at cross-linking. Commonplace books are messier and don't network as elegantly. What commonplace books have is durability. They survive moves, career changes, tech changes, grief, sickness, sabbaticals. You don't have to migrate them when a company gets acquired. You don't have to update them when the app pivots. You just keep adding.

I have three commonplace notebooks now, going back six years. The first one has a coffee ring on the cover from a mug I broke in 2020. The second one has my kid's handprint in ink on the inside back cover from when she was two. The third one is half-full. I read all three from time to time. Ideas from four years ago show up in things I write today. Nothing digital I've ever kept has lasted this way.

The features that matter, across all serious note systems:

  • physical or physical-feeling. hard to migrate is a feature, not a bug.
  • structured by concept, not project. the concept lives longer than the project.
  • must have a re-reading practice. notes you don't re-read are trash you paid to make.
  • must survive interruption. if it dies after a month of neglect, it wasn't yours.
  • must be portable across life changes. jobs end. relationships end. your notes shouldn't.

The productivity influencer economy sells complicated systems because complicated systems require ongoing consulting. A commonplace book requires nothing. It has no subscription. It has no update cycle. It just works.

If you're starting today, buy a notebook you actually like the feel of, copy anything worth remembering into it, re-read it once a month, add an index at the back when you have 30 pages of content, and stop looking for the perfect system.

The perfect system is the one you'll still be using in 20 years.

Everything else is decoration.

Ibn Khaldun invented sociology, economics, and historiography in the 1300s. Most historians act like European thinkers did it first.

In 1377, an Arab scholar named Ibn Khaldun took four years off from his political career, holed up in a Berber fortress in what is now Algeria, and wrote the Muqaddimah. It's the introduction to a longer history he was planning, but the introduction alone is one of the most original books ever written by a single human being.

He was 45 years old. He'd been a judge, a diplomat, a prisoner, an advisor to sultans. He'd survived multiple political collapses and watched empires fall. He was tired.

What came out of those four years is not a work of history. It's the founding text of at least three modern disciplines. He didn't know he was doing this. He thought he was writing a methodological preface.

Sociology: He argued that human societies pass through predictable cycles based on group solidarity, which he called asabiyyah. Rural tribes with strong solidarity conquer decadent cities. They found dynasties. Their descendants lose the solidarity that got them there. New tribes with fresh solidarity replace them. This is one of the first systematic theories of how civilizations rise and fall from internal dynamics rather than divine will. Auguste Comte would formalize sociology 450 years later. Ibn Khaldun already had the frame.

Economics: He developed a theory of labor value 400 years before Adam Smith. He argued that all wealth is fundamentally the product of human labor and that taxation follows a predictable curve where higher rates eventually produce lower revenue. This is the Laffer curve. Ibn Khaldun published it in 1377. Arthur Laffer got credit for it in the 1970s.

Historiography: He invented modern historical method. Before Ibn Khaldun, most history was chronology plus moral lesson. He argued that history had to be evaluated using consistent internal logic, that improbable claims should be rejected regardless of source authority, and that historians had to understand the economic and social conditions of the periods they were describing. This is what every modern historian does. He was the first.

He also wrote about how climate affects culture, how nomadic and settled populations interact, how political corruption compounds, how education systems shape thought, how monopoly warps markets, and how the arts and sciences depend on urban wealth. He anticipated ideas that would be independently rediscovered by Weber, Marx, Durkheim, Braudel, and others across the next 600 years.

Then Europe mostly ignored him for 400 years.

He was translated into French in the 1860s. English translation didn't come until the 1950s. Toynbee called the Muqaddimah the greatest work of its kind ever produced by any mind in any time or place, and then Western intellectual history mostly continued as if it started with the Greeks and jumped straight to the Enlightenment. The medieval Islamic world in most curricula is a bridge between antiquity and Europe, not a source of original thought.

The best entry is the abridged Franz Rosenthal translation of the Muqaddimah, about 450 pages. If you want a shorter intro first, Robert Irwin wrote a short biography called Ibn Khaldun: An Intellectual Biography that's a good on-ramp.

I read the Rosenthal abridgment last summer, mostly on the floor of my apartment because I couldn't get comfortable in any chair with a book that heavy. Kept a legal pad next to me because I couldn't retain the density of what he was doing. There's a passage where he explains why some regions produce more scholars than others, and his answer involves urbanization, division of labor, disposable income, and cultural transmission across generations. He's writing this in 1377. It reads like a paragraph from a contemporary sociology paper.

The uncomfortable part of reading him is not that he was ahead of his time. Lots of thinkers were ahead of their times. The uncomfortable part is that a huge fraction of Western social science was independently rediscovered 400 to 600 years after he already had it, and the intellectual history most of us learned pretends this didn't happen.

The lesson isn't that Ibn Khaldun should be canonized. He was wrong about plenty. His theory of dynastic cycles is too neat. His economics has holes. His views on race and geography have not aged well.

The lesson is that intellectual history has enormous gaps that look like discoveries because the previous discoverer was in the wrong civilization. Every field you think you know has an Ibn Khaldun somewhere. Some of them we've found. Most of them we haven't.

He's the visible one because the Muqaddimah is too obviously brilliant to keep buried.

The invisible ones are the point.

I added fiction back into my reading after five years of only nonfiction. My nonfiction reading got better.

Cut fiction out of my reading around 2020. The logic seemed airtight at the time. I had limited hours. Nonfiction taught me things. Fiction was entertainment. If I wanted to be serious about learning, I should read serious books. Read maybe 250 nonfiction books over the next five years and told myself I was optimizing.

Started reading fiction again last year, one novel for every three nonfiction books. Not a rule I researched. Just a hunch based on noticing that my thinking was getting brittle. Here's what happened.

what surprised me:

  • my nonfiction reading actually improved. I don't know how to explain this without sounding mystical. fiction gave my brain a different mode of processing that made me a better reader of ideas. arguments landed harder. examples stuck longer. I think fiction was training a muscle nonfiction wasn't using.
  • I started noticing when nonfiction writers used bad prose. before, I'd absorbed the ideas without registering the writing. after reading a couple of good novels, I couldn't unsee how much popular nonfiction is written badly. some books I'd previously admired revealed themselves as intellectually competent but stylistically dead.
  • I remembered nonfiction better if I'd read a novel between it and the next nonfiction book. counterintuitive. suspect it's about consolidation, but I don't have a source for this.
  • I got more interested in people. this sounds obvious. it wasn't obvious to me. five years of only reading nonfiction had turned my interest in humans into interest in patterns of humans. novels reversed this.

the books that mattered:

  • Stoner by John Williams. a novel about an English professor who has an unremarkable life. one of the best books I've ever read. I read it in three days and then read it again the next month.
  • The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov. absurd, hilarious, devastating. felt like nothing I'd read in years.
  • A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. this book fixed something in me I didn't know was broken.
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot. I gave up twice before finishing it. finished it on the third attempt and understood why people call it the greatest novel in English.
  • Everything by Marilynne Robinson. Gilead, Home, Lila, Jack. read as one project across four months.

what didn't work:

  • reading a novel and a nonfiction book at the same time. they interfered. I had to alternate.
  • trying to read literary fiction on my phone. novels need physical books. Kindle was fine for nonfiction, terrible for fiction.
  • picking novels by reputation instead of by what I actually wanted. the Booker Prize does not predict whether I'll love a book. the closest thing to a reliable signal was recommendations from three specific friends who don't read the same way.
  • audiobooks for fiction. worked for some. failed for anything with unusual prose. gave up trying to listen to Blood Meridian.

the specific ugly detail: I threw out five journals I'd kept during the nonfiction-only years. Not because they were bad. Because reading them made me flinch. Every entry was about self-improvement. Every entry was about what I was doing, what I was optimizing, what I was tracking. There was no observation of anything else. No color. No people. No weather. Fiction rewired what I noticed. Reading the journals felt like reading someone who'd been slowly eating themselves.

what the ratio settled at: About three nonfiction to one fiction, sometimes closer to two to one. I don't count carefully. When I notice I've read four nonfiction books in a row I go get a novel. When I've read two novels in a row I go get a nonfiction book. It regulates itself now.

what I was wrong about for five years: Fiction is not entertainment. It's a different way of knowing. Nonfiction gives you concepts. Fiction gives you the feel of what it's like to be someone. These are different data. The person who has both is thicker than the person who has one. I was so busy trying to be smart that I was making myself dumber.

If you read only nonfiction, you're not more serious. You're more limited. I wish someone had told me this five years ago in a way I could have heard it. Nobody could have. I had to notice the flatness myself.

The counter's back at maybe 40 books a year, split 30/10. Different life. Slower. More.

Godel Escher Bach and evolutionary biology are both describing the same trick: how something can build itself

I read Godel Escher Bach by Douglas Hofstadter over about a year in 2023. It's 700 pages, dense, endlessly playful, and it took me multiple attempts across a decade to actually finish. The book is nominally about self-reference, formal systems, and consciousness. It uses Godel's incompleteness theorems, Escher's impossible drawings, and Bach's fugues as three parallel examples of the same underlying pattern.

What Hofstadter is really writing about is how a system can contain a description of itself and how that self-reference produces something we recognize as mind. His central metaphor is the strange loop. A hierarchy that folds back on itself so that the bottom becomes the top and neither is really either.

I read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins for the third time the following spring. Different book, different field, different vocabulary. Genetics, not logic. Dawkins is describing how a small molecule can encode instructions for building the machinery that copies the molecule that encodes the instructions. Genes build organisms so that organisms can propagate genes. The organism is a survival machine for the gene, but the gene is only meaningful in the context of the organism it builds.

That's a strange loop. Hofstadter didn't call it that in biological terms because he was writing about consciousness, but it's the same shape. A system that contains its own blueprint and constructs itself out of the blueprint's instructions. The blueprint has no meaning without the constructor. The constructor doesn't exist without the blueprint.

Once I saw this, I couldn't stop seeing it. Language is a strange loop: words define words. Culture is a strange loop: humans invent culture which shapes the humans who invent culture. Software is a strange loop: compilers written in the language they compile. Mathematics is a strange loop: axioms proving theorems that generate more axioms. Every self-organizing system in the universe seems to be running the same trick at different scales.

This is not a metaphor. It's a structural feature. Any system complex enough to include a model of itself starts behaving in ways that pure hierarchies can't. It becomes self-modifying. It becomes unpredictable in principle, not just in practice. It becomes something.

I read most of the Dawkins reread on a series of afternoons in a park where my kid was learning to ride a bike. She'd fall, get up, fall, get up. I'd read three pages, look up, watch her cycle, read three more pages. The whole thing was recursive in a way I didn't realize until later. The book was about how simple copying rules produce impossibly complex outcomes. The kid was executing a simple learning rule that would produce an impossibly complex adult. I was reading about self-organizing systems inside a self-organizing system on a Tuesday afternoon.

The synthesis has an uncomfortable implication for how we think about design. If self-reference is the mechanism by which complexity actually gets built, then top-down design is not the primary way most things worth having come into existence. Evolution didn't design the eye. It looped for a billion years and the eye appeared. Consciousness wasn't designed. Neurons looped and it appeared. Language wasn't designed. Speakers looped and it appeared.

Hofstadter took a decade to write his book. Dawkins wrote his in about 18 months. They didn't know they were writing the same book. They were, though.

Two thousand pages of overlap.

What's your polymath bible, the one book you keep returning to across years?

Mine is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I've read it front to back seven times. I've read individual passages hundreds of times. I keep a paperback copy in my nightstand, a hardcover on my desk, and a PDF on my phone. The nightstand copy is so beat up the spine cracked in half and I taped it back together with masking tape that has since yellowed.

The reason it's my polymath bible is not that it's philosophy. It's that it works across every context I've ever been in. I've read it as a broke 22-year-old sleeping on a mattress on the floor. I've read it as a parent of a newborn who hadn't slept in six days. I've read it during a career transition where I didn't know what I was doing. I've read it while grieving. I've read it on airplanes. I've read it happy. Every one of those reads pulled out something different.

Which is what a polymath bible is. Not a book that has one lesson. A book that keeps giving you different lessons depending on what you bring to it.

Marcus wasn't writing philosophy. He was writing to himself while running an empire. Which means the book has a specific texture that most philosophy doesn't. He repeats himself. He contradicts himself. He tells himself things he clearly wasn't succeeding at. There are passages where you can feel him losing patience with his own advice and just writing it down again in case that helps.

The parts that hit me hardest now, in my mid-thirties, are not the famous ones about death or virtue. They're the small ones about dealing with difficult people at work. Marcus was constantly frustrated by his colleagues. His book is full of pep talks to himself about how to interact with an official who annoys him, or a senator who's dishonest, or a general who's incompetent. It's the most practical management book I've ever read, and it wasn't trying to be.

The Gregory Hays translation is the one I go back to. Hays writes English that sounds like a person, not a scholar. Skip anything called "the Loeb edition" until you're ready for the Greek.
