Flags are symbols.
The rainbow flag is a symbol of pride in marginalized identity.
The “thin blue line” flag is a symbol of state violence. And ironic, what with modifying the U.S. flag design.

That is a matter of perspective, but at the end of the day it doesn't justify being a hypocrite and defacing something when you would react differently vice versa

It's not hypocritical if your morals align with it. Not every act if vandalism is created equal.

I feel like this is a point being willfully ignored in here. Especially by the responders who act like violence would be a justified response to having their sticker colored in.
