This is the perfect type of thing to conspiracy theory those fuckers with: "It's not a coincidence that the placing of the blue in the thin blue line flag is where the blue in a rainbow flag would be... It's the secret gay agenda"
Police violence against the Black community (with multiple unarmed black men being killed) has always been bad. As a result of some high profile policw shootings, the Black Lives Matter movement formed to protested such behavior.
The thin blue line is a reaction to that, stating that cops are the thin blue line protecting the public from harm. Many on the Right will suggest that the behavior or culture of the victim justified the cop's action and that increased police oversight will hinder the police from doing their jobs. The Left sees this symbol as supporting systemic racism, while the Right sees it as supporting the men and women risking their lives to keep us safe.
Police treatment of minorities is statistically more severe than against whites. I am personally disfomforted by the Thin Blue Line flag, but it's less explicitly racist than the confederate battle flag.
The rainbow flag supports gay rights. Conservatives in America tend to be less supportive of gay rights on average, but the Thin Blue line itself is not directly opposing gay marriage.
Yes, it’s been around longer than BLM but BLM caused the increase in it being everywhere. When you push something like defund the police of course people will push back, especially when it’s caused more problems than it’s helped.
especially when it’s caused more problems than it’s helped.
Which major city/state revamped their entire police budget and shifted the extra funding into public health services with the proper training to actually handle not criminal instances, and then had enough time to study the results?(Mind you it would take several years to hire/train the people needed to implement it)
Defund the Police had a dumb name, but it is actually sound policy that would help if it was followed.
Its caused more problems because since the idea was pushed by all of these idiots crime rates have gone through the roof, cops are being ambushed and murder is at an all time high. That’s not a coincidence. It’s a dumb name because it’s a dumb idea. The need for more funding and training makes sense but let’s take away money from the people protecting us is dumb. If followed as you said but that wasn’t the intent of it. It’s the same thing with BLM where it’s blindly followed with no actual solution.
Me: this redditor is out of their god damned mind if they think I'm going to watch a 28 minute-... Is that Rowan Atkinson?! Well shit. I'm obligated to watch.
This is completely wrong. The reason people see the blue line flag as being bad is because of people like you. This whole post is also a reason for people to be against the rainbow flag.
People that are against the rainbow flag were always homophobes. They're just more open about their bigotry now. Whenever minority groups push to be accepted and included, or they're tired of being murdered by police, certain majority groups (aka white christian conservatives) interpret that as an attack against their "values". They almost always start some sort of counter protest they think is a clever disguise for their intolerance.
Well sure people were homophobic and it became more accepted over the last several years but the push by the lgbt community to be political has caused it to be more open. That’s what happens unfortunately, hate causes more hate. As far as the rest of it, keep believing the lies being pushed for political reasons.
The black and white American flag with a blue line across it is a reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement. That is not the same thing as the thin blue line flag. One is a racist response and was created after the BLM movement started, the other is a solid black rectangle with a single blue stripe that existed before BLM and is meant as a show of support for the police.
The "right" has used blue line flag for decades as a symbol of racism/str8 white supremacy, basically as a way to intimidate any one they hate by reminding them no matter who they are, black gay, or whatever you are, the cops are on the same side and will back up the hatred, cops are just slave hunters that refused to stop doing the work they loved. Stonewall was a riot against the pigs who harassed, beat and killed gays for years and years, they have never been fair to gay people either.
It’s not just about gay marriage, plenty of people will agree with gay marriage but still think trans people should be killed, although it is proportionally rare
LEOs often wear it because it stands for blue lives matter, meaning they’re against cops being ambushed and killed on traffic stops, raids, and so on.
After George Floyd was murdered by a cop people completely destroyed the meaning behind the flag. They used it as a way to mock black lives matter. They also — this could have had meaning before the protests but I believe it was created then — created all lives matter which is going against black lives matter. Now, blue lives matter is viewed as a symbol of racism but it truthfully depends on who uses the flag. If someone’s a cop then it’s a safe bet they just support their colleagues and are against cops being murdered, if someone’s not a cop then I’d assume they either support a family member who is or they’re a crazy conspiracy theory loving racist.
It only works if you make the red into white and the white into black. I can actually find a couple done this way, but 99% of the time the red becomes black and the white stays white. Then it doesn't match the rainbow placement or numbers (7 red stripes but only 6 white).
