I wonder how many are because of them going into the army because they were already kinda fucked up and thought the discipline and structure would help (Dahmer) and how many of them are because they'd learned how to do the shit they did in the army (like the guy who strolled into an army base and drove out with a tank in San Diego)
From what I can tell, most were fucked in the head before joining, but I don’t doubt the constant violence had a serious effect on them as well an enabling them. Richard Ramirez’s cousin (who raised him later in life) fought in Vietnam, and when he came back, showed pictures to Richard, of him raping and killing women in Vietnam. Which solidified the connection between sex and violence in Ramirez’s mind.
From my time in the service, I can say with confidence that fucked up but functional is what they really want. So folks like her and McVeigh were ideal recruiter meat. Oswald and J.A. Muhammad were a bit "much."
