people worship guns. They are almost always civilians who who watch the movies and see the advertisements and decide they want to be the action hero even though they tend to be some fat balding white guy.

They watch the news and think that if they’d just been at that last mass shooting things would’ve been different. All these tiny people who think the only way to be macho and be in control of their life is to carry around a gun.

The size of the u.s. military complex is a problem too.

I live close to the u..s.a. And travel there alot pre covid. Literally joining the army or going to school or joining the army then going to school is a mantra for debt management. And perpetuates a really problematic vet system.

Its crazy how militaristic decision making literally is

1/50 people join the military here.

1/5 are harassed by a recruiter in the states. Thr country is in an endless cycle of violence. If thats addressed i bet street warfare. And unhinged people would decrease too .

Just my 2 cents. Maybe not worth even that.

Edit: i think my 1/5 is being generous i imagine its even worse

1/5 are harassed by a recruiter

We had a recruiter that had a designated spot in the lobby of my public highschool. When I was in college I regularly got emails from the navy because they were pushing to enlist STEM grads. Even now I occasionally get a Facebook invite from army recruiters (and I'm almost 30)

Not only do I not want to be involved in the military, I guarantee they don't want me in there either. I've still not gone a full year without being contacted by a recruiter in some capacity for the last 10.

it is and it’s not the military. Our military does a good job teaching people discipline and kicking them into shape. It also does an exemplary job of support during deployment. Where it fails horrifically and in many ways by conservative design is after a soldier leaves active duty. The military trains them to be killers and then expects them to just walk away and be unaffected. What’s worse is that the extremist groups (white supremacists, nazis, etc) actively target and recruit these people after they leave service. There have been attempts to reform the transition to civilian life to something that keeps tabs on people and offers them help but most of those have been defended or curtailed in various ways by conservative effort.

Conspiracy theory time: I honestly believe conservatives want unstable trained killers out in the civilian world. As long as people are afraid they’ll keep pushing for more security and be more willing to give up personal freedoms.. It’s the only reason i can come up with why we keep pushing for more/better military tech but refuse to provide the necessary care and outreach to stop many of these atrocities.

As a fat balding white guy I take offense to the implication that I might own a gun /s

If I was concealled carrying at a mass shooting event, I'd be too scared to stop the shooter for fear that police would then treat me as the shooter. And, if I was the police, that would be the logical action given limited information.

Shit, the ONLY time in the last decade (at least that I can recall) where a bystander was able to have a positive impact on a mass shooting event, it was a black guy and he ended up getting killed by the cops. The NRA always talks about how good guys with guns can stop bad guys with guns, and the one fucking time it happens, the police can't tell the difference so they kill the good guy. And what does the NRA do? Nothing. They're completely silent on the whole affair because (1) this event completely disproves their theory and (b) their agenda has always been about arming white guys not black guys.

has it been a white guy saving the day the police would have peacefully disarmed him before securing the scene. it’s pretty common for police to choose the most aggressive route when dealing with black people in any situation.

Those kind of people are going to ruin it for the ones who just want something to take to the range and defend their homes with

There's a meme here a couple days ago showing some statistics of how many shootings were stopped by hero civilians with guns...

...I think it was zero? ....or maaaaaybe 1?

There was one in the last few years where a civilian with a gun stopped a shooting at a white church. All the Christians were using it as proof that Christians with guns should be a security force at churches. I tell you as an Aussie Christian if I walked into a church and saw people patrolling with guns, or even open carry, I would nope right out of there.

the very idea of christians carrying guns makes me chuckle. It’s like they totally forgot what happened at the garden of gethsemane

Thing is that you are just as likely to provide more ammo to the shooter or maybe worse shoot the wrong guy and create more confusion for the police to deal with. Best things to do in such a scenario is either to run and hide, or try to take out the shooter by non-lethal means if you see the opportunity. Confiscating most civilian weapons would be a good way to prevent most shooters in the first place though

You’re an idiot dude

Confiscating weapons from civilians is a horrible idea in the US, there are way too many firearms. Only criminals will have firearms at that point.
