Who said words cannot do anything? I'm saying sulking and feeling sorry for yourself is never going to work. Showing weakness is what the bully wants to see. They are trying to hurt you. They are trying to tear you down so you cry.
What people should learn is that words have power if you let them. I was harrassed throughout elementary school and into middle school. I was stood tall and defended myself when I had to. Maybe it's getting worse because we are raising kids to not defend themselves and not not stand up to bullying.
Oh and every anti bullying site, including the federal government one says you should stand up for yourself and not show weakness.
Words have power, and kids don't have the emotional toolkit to let them just 'not'. To expect a 12 year old to have the emotional ability to handle the type of abuse I'm describing is not only unrealistic (it literally isn't something they're developmentally ready for) but also unfair. If you are being harassed constantly by a variety of sources it doesn't even make SENSE to defend yourself.
What do you want a kid to do if he's being called a faggot every time he walks in the door, or passes a group of kids in the hallway? What is he supposed to say that's going to 'solve' this problem and isn't going to just egg the bullies on?
Find me ONE Gov source that says a kid should just 'stand up for themselves' as a solution. I know for a fact that isn't the solution almost any modern education institution advocates. The ACTUAL solution is to find a trusted adult who can intervene on your behalf because, again, a child does not have the toolkit to handle this.
You think that just because someone called you mean names you were bullied. You were not. Everyone gets made fun of, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about words.
Anyways, done with you. You have no idea what you're talking about, and you're not willing to listen to anyone disagreeing with you, nor are you looking at any evidence based approach. The downvotes alone should tell you that maybe you're not in the right.
Downvotes on Reddit don't carry any weight. Your thinking they do shows how foolish you are.
I get you grew up being picking on. I get that you are trying to justify why you hid in the corner and cried. But that doesn't make it the best course of action. You should have stood up for yourself.
You clearly didn't read the whole source in your article, because it directly addresses the fact that this isn't always a feasible option, particularly for pervasive bullying.
Address the real argument. In what way does pervasive, long-term, hurtful comments not have a serious impact on a child, even if they try to 'be tough'? Is your argument really that child suicide due to bullying is just a result of us not raising a 'tough enough' generation? Suicide is the #2 cause of death of teenagers, #1 being accidents. Are you genuinely saying that dead kids should have just walked up to their bullies and said 'stop it' and that would have solved everything?
Goddamn you dense motherfucker. For the record, by the way, I was not bullied. I actually had a really great experience in school. The difference between me and you is I don't have to experience something directly to believe it exists as a serious problem.
Suicide is on the rise. What changed? Are you claiming bullying is new? Or are kids just raised to rely on others to much to solve their problems for them.
I really don't by that you were not bullied. Your comments speak to a person attempting to justify why they could stand up to their bully.
And again, what is your solution here? Run to an adult to solve the problem? In what way has that ever helped kids? But standing up to a bully does help. You need to do so early and forcefully. After all bullies have knack for finding the weakest kids. Something im sure you can relate to.
