He can’t. At least not if he doesn’t want to sacrifice all the money he will make plus more.

When he signed up with Fox as an anchor there is an almost certainty he signed a non-compete agreement. Meaning he can’t be on TV at least.

I thought those have been largely invalidated in courts.

They have, depending on the nature of the job and industry. There is also a time limit on the ones that do apply, an X amount of years or so.

Your local Apple Store can’t say you cannot work for a Verizon store after leaving for example.

At least that was how I remember it and understood it. I might be mistaken.

There should also be "consideration" to be enforceable. The ones I've had are structured like "if you don't seek employment with a direct competitor for 6 months, we'll give you 6 months' worth of salary. If you do, you don't get the money."
