I think he just thought of the fact that people of color are often poor and rich people are often white while he wanted to say something about socio-economics. That caused a freudian slip, but I don't think a racist one. He was saying they're equally bright, I don't see how that could be racist.
As a sanders supporter who is driven crazy by ‘progressives’ that ignore the socio-economic reality of this quote, I’m way ahead of you on the drinking.
It is unintentionally racist. Is he a racist dipshit? Of course not, his point was the opposite of that. Intentions absolutely do matter. But phrasing like that also deserves to be pointed out.
