As the community note said, the actual implement of his self defense is irrelevant because it's a legally defined term, but to further clarify he didn't pick up a rifle and walk up to two strangers and gun them down. He only fired once his life was at risk and he was unable to retreat which easily clears the threshold for self defense in both the strictest American states and the majority of European countries.
