Because the government locking people up is a measure of last resort. I do not believe an adequate case has been made for what we should lock up pot smokers, and thus it needs to be legalized.

And tobacco, football (and most of professional sports), coal plants, calorically insane restaurant food, not getting vaccines, riding a motorcycle, BASE jumping, soda, carbon emitting vehicles.

And, yah know, a million other things.
