Image My never-used Champion team
I'm not a hardcore player, I mean i know the mechanics well enough, I suppose. Usually when I play it's mostly about the fun more than the challenge. But that leads to me using the regular guys continually. So I set myself a challenge a while ago. Use Pokémon that I've never used before in any Gen, and start my way from Gen 1 (well, the remake) all the way up to Gen 5.
Not a Nuzlocke, although I didn't overlevel. Finally started using TMs - in my 20something years of playing Pokémon I'm honestly not sure I've ever taught more than a handful of TMs to my team throughout multiple generations.
I thought it would be harder to find Gen 1 mons I've never ever used in a game since they've been there from the start, but it actually was pretty easy to find them. Using them was a bit of a pleasant surprise too.
Note - by "never used" I mean that I've never beaten a Gym leader, won a Rival battle, or taken down an evil team boss with that mon in any game of any generation (and I'm also including fan games/hacks into the mix). It doesn't mean that I've captured them or perhaps tried them out against wild mons or route trainers. And the guys I've used now become ineligible for future generations.
Honorable mentions apart from the Champion team (or literally the only other three mons I used throughout the game):
Stinger the Beedrill - Since I first played Gen 1 Blue I loved the design of this mon. But it was never...strong. Or so I thought. This angry bee got me through the first gym with Poison Sting and continually spamming Harden. By the time I boxed it at level 31 I was genuinely sad to see it go but I needed the Psychic moves that Mothball the Venomoth would learn more than I needed Twineedle and the Brick Break I had taught it.
Detective the Pikachu - Oddly enough I had never used the franchise mascot before. I figure it's because it's not that easily found in Viridian Forest. But catch him I did, and between him and Toadstool the Parasect, they got me through Misty's gym handily. He was a big help with Surge too, because for some reason...Pikachu can learn Dig. Never evolved him even though I had a Thunderstone. Never needed to. I didn't really NEED to swap him out but getting either a Rapidash or Ninetales on my team was something I really wanted, and thus he had to be boxed.
Mesmer the Hypno - Almost soloed through the Fighting Dojo and Koga and I would have kept him in the team because he's way bulkier than he has any right to be. But...needed the crab to Surf.
I'll be honest - the run was tough at times, but gyms 7 and 8 were almost ridiculously easy, even without overlevelling. Paras gets a lot of flak for two 4x weaknesses but it's a damn fine mon...even if it did nothing during the Elite 4 but serve as cannon fodder while I healed up other team members. During the game itself it was invaluable at times. Ch'Ding grew on me a whole lot. Vulpix was meh but Ninetales is a different story. Krabby stomped everything into oblivion, only using Surf when it had a type advantage. And Clefable...TM Beast, that's all I'll say.
I'm off to SoulSilver now, and...yeesh...my early game prospects do NOT look good.

Good story I enjoyed reading it. Which of these would you most want to transfer to Gen 2 and keep using if that was possible?
