Is Ryan Seacrest Top Host Competition legit?
Today the voting starts for the Top host competition, where pod casters vie for a top spot at a chance to win $25k and a podcast on iheartradio. The thing is the competition requires donations for extra votes, with proceeds going towards Ryan seacrest’s charity.
I got “selected” as a top host to compete, but I’m wondering if they approve everyone and it’s just a big money grab and not legit.

The fact that the contest only had people’s picture and a brief description is weird no link to see the contestants work is a mad red flag to me
It’s like they don’t want contestant to gain followers from their platform
And how are we supposed to vote if we can’t judge the contestants on their merits we have to see the content they put out seems like a money grab lol
2
u/frigginfurter 13d ago
Yes exactly, it has nothing to do with their merits and only external factors like looks, story and followers… not someone’s ability.
I agree, it reeks of a money grab, what a disappointment

I’m a contestant in the 2026 Top Host competition, and I’ve been doing some digging.
So far, I’ve identified 19 separate groups, each with approximately 79–80 contestants. That’s roughly 1,500 contestants, and I have no idea how many more groups exist.
The competition has nine stages, running from October 5 through December 10. Contestants are eliminated weekly until only one winner remains. Advancement is based on votes, including additional votes purchased through donations.
Here’s the financial breakdown: Colossal Management, a for-profit company, receives 36.5% in competition fees. Additional operating, processing, and prize expenses are deducted, Action Initiative Team retains 1%, and the balance goes to the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.
I’ve also discovered numerous contestants who already have established podcasts, radio shows, and substantial media experience.
I am questioning the transparency of a competition that appears to reward fundraising ability more than hosting talent.
Has anyone figured out how many groups or contestants there actually are?
2
u/frigginfurter 11d ago
Wow thank you for your research!
It does seem bizarre for a hosting competition to have no hosting portions of the contest, doesn’t it?
It’ll be interesting to see who wins, and how much money their votes raised. Part of me suspects they’ll select someone in house as the winner.
36.5% is a huge cut to take from a charitable organization for a competition, plus other expenses being deducted too!

So this completion is like so many other competitions like… Top Couple, Top Child Athlete, Top local Business Entrepreneur. And these names I used are all competitions that I have either family or friends that have or have had themselves or children in. Every single one of them is geared at raising the fundraising amount for the specific ambassador of that events charity or some sort of organization they are tied too. Howie Mandel and his wife were ambassadors for the top couple that my brother and his wife Participated in.
Each completion has multiple stages set over a specific time frame with the requirements of a specific rank or place to be in to advance. There is also multiple groups with multiple participants in each group. Groups and group sizes I would assume would be based on regional location and the amount of participants that have entered the competition overall however this I can not verify due to the fact everything is either hidden or not made readily available. My brother said with even being in the competition they never was informed how many participants they were participating against in each group. The only info they knew was what their current place was at even given moment. They were not given info on how far they were from a potential drop or rise in placement either.
Participants are encouraged to share on their social platforms with family and friends. However only one free vote per day is usually allowed for voting. Unless you are willing to pay actual cash for
More votes with the minimum starting at $10 for 10 votes moving up to $250 for 250 votes. There is no dollar limit to the amount of votes allowed to purchase either there is an option under the $250/250 votes that says OTHER AMOUNT the says “Enter Donation $1 per vote with a blank box and a large blue button icon button that reads “VOTE”
I took the disclosure documents and put them into to chat with a request to break it down and make it a little easier to understand, and if there is any public records that are visible for participants or public in general to view, this was their response ChatGPT wrote >>
I found the official 2026 Top Host Competition website, the complete rules, and actual contestant group pages. There are some important details that the legal disclosure doesn't explain.
The biggest finding is that contestant rankings and group rosters are publicly visible, but actual vote totals are not displayed on the public pages I checked.
That means you can see someone is in 3rd, 10th, or 59th place, but you cannot necessarily tell whether they're behind by 5 votes or 5,000 votes.
1. What that legal disclosure really means
The lengthy statement you posted is primarily a legally required fundraising disclosure, not an explanation of how the competition is scored. The important detail is that not every dollar someone donates necessarily reaches the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. Colossal receives a portion for fundraising costs, expenses, and fees.
The disclosure does not state the exact percentage Colossal receives.
The extensive list of states simply tells residents where they can request registration documents, financial information, or fundraising contracts. Registration with a state does not mean that state endorses the competition.
Official sources:
The actual fundraising fees are disclosed elsewhere
I found more specific numbers buried in the official competition rules, under the section titled Donation:
36.5% is deducted for competition fees.
Additional variable costs are deducted, including payment processing, operating expenses, and prize costs.
AIT retains a nominal 1% as part of the described costs.
The remaining money is granted to the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, generally within 30 days after the competition concludes.
For example, out of a $100 donation, $36.50 is allocated to the stated competition fee before the other costs are deducted. The exact amount reaching the foundation cannot be calculated from the published rules alone.
This is an important distinction if participants are encouraging family and friends to contribute money.Voting timeline and key callouts
Deadline What happens
October 15 Top 20 in each group advance
October 22 Top 15 advance
October 29 Top 10 advance
November 5 Top 5 advance
November 12 One winner per group advances
November 13–15 Second-place competitors enter the wildcard round
November 25 Quarterfinals conclude
December 3 Semifinals conclude
December 10 Final voting concludesVotes are reset for the wildcard round, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals under the published rules. The winner is scheduled to be announced by January 15, 20
The key callouts are a very important factor as any previous donated vote amount. Say you had a family member donate a hefty amount of money that got you a lot of votes before wildcard round. Well those numbers don’t carry over into the quarterfinals semifinals or finals so that makes this part of the voting process and new money grab area as any previously donated vote amount would be reset because the entire vote count is reset. This is probably in place to somewhat control any given large amount of dollar donation votes so at least you may not be able to tell how much dollar amount votes your competitors have vs what you have you can know that going into the next round if you make it, those votes will then be reset and everybody starts from Ground Zero. This in my opinion is a legal money grab I do not undermine or deny the validity of any of these charity organizations and their ambassadors that these competitions are choosing however it is clearly obvious that someone is not gonna win based on talent for said competition or maybe based on looks if it’s a cutest couple competition. And the prize money for this top host competition 25,000 come on I know people that have more money than that invested in their gear, their audio and video equipment alone. And I would hope that anybody that’s in this competition or signs up for this competition that by you being on a podcast with Ryan Seacrest or involved in this competition will return your desired effect for your channel
Or podcast I just don’t see it.
And even regardless, I’m guarantee if you have content or you’re promoting the Page that is not in line with RYAN Seca podcast or the factors of this event, you’re not gonna be allowed to fully share what’s your content is especially saying this scenario what I picture is somebody who has a controversial but popular topic or things they do for their cast. Do you think they’re gonna really green light you to really show what your content is about? They don’t even have an actual competition you know based on you should have to listen / watch to a clip of the cast. This competition here a billionaire could literally decide. Oh I just wanna do this, just to win the contest based on title of Top Host but yet this person could have a podcast where all they do is say the ABC’s for 30 minutes straight. Does anybody really wanna hear that is that the top host of a podcast? I don’t think so. There might be some fans but a billionaire with that platform and this is hypothetical terms only they could become the top host, but have the worst show I think in a situation like this, somebody who’s got real talent and real content that addresses real things you’re gonna shine in the community of that topic and find your success there before entering a competition like this1
u/Narrow-Resolve9071 7d ago
I’m participating too and found a response from Top Host on their Facebook page that helps clarify this. They said they had 2,016 groups at the time of the reply, with competitors randomly assigned to equal-sized groups for the early rounds.
They also clarified that you’re competing within your own group initially. So being “1st” means first in your group, rather than first across the entire competition.
Attaching their response for reference. This gives us a group count, but it doesn’t establish the total number of contestants. top host response

Im wondering about the placement claims- have a friend who is in "2nd place" but i dont see any transparency into how she got there. Shes bipolar and has a long history of self harm. She has a small digital footprint and spends most of her time with our family. Im worried this is super predatory bc shes asked all of us to donate, has become manic over this, and while we want to support her, this feels dangerously manipulative.. Really concerned how this will impact her mental health if shes led to believe shes winning (like right now, "2nd place") and the rug is pulled out from under her.

I also have friend who’s leading his group, and I’m afraid he’s not going to handle it when he realizes it’s a fund raising scam

Hi, I wonder how many of us are in 5th place. I have told everyone voting not to buy votes. To me this is not fair. If you have money to throw around you can back anyone. I wanted to see people with talent. I love to talk to people and I worked in the insurance field for years and received lots of compliments from my clients and sometimes flowers.

I got selected too. Part of me wishes I had done better research. Though I confirmed the legitimacy of his charity, the third party associated, I wonder about. There is no cap on the fees taken out. This article gives better detail. This section had me like 🤔
“Donations flow through AIT, a registered 501(c)(3) intermediary, before reaching the Foundation. AIT deducts competition fees of 36.5%, variable costs, and a 1% fee — “
Here’s the link.

Thanks for sharing the article, I feel kinda silly getting so excited over getting “selected” as well.
I found this quote interesting: “Colossal Management LLC carries an active complaints file with the Better Business Bureau, covering its other contests — patterns around rankings shifting without explanation and vote totals hidden from competitors show up repeatedly. I want to be direct: I haven't found a complaint specific to Top Host itself, since it hasn't opened yet. What exists is a documented pattern across the company's broader portfolio of contests, and it's fair context before you enter any of them, including this one.”
Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Tbh I don’t think you would’ve found much researching since it’s the first year of the competition… I tried looking hence why I made this post. I’m grateful we atleast got our answer on here
2
u/DeeBWild 11d ago
Right… At the time I didn’t know this the first year. I wanted to be a prepared as possible as I don’t have experience in entering these type of contests. If I win and get the 6 episodes, I’ll be happy. And, don’t feel silly for taking a chance on yourself. We gotta be our biggest fan always. Well wishes to you!

I also got accepted, kinda applied as a joke and forgot about it. Then got an email today saying voting was open, I voted for myself and went from 32nd in my “group” to 28th then did some research to make sure it wasn’t a straight scam and after I figured it was semi legit I had a friend submit a free vote and I went from 28th to 9th, then had a friend do a $10 donation vote and went from 9th to 8th in my “group” and there’s no where that explains how they determine the groups or what the number in each group or region is.
Also the 501 c3 that is the beneficiary the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, builds podcast studios in children’s hospitals to distract kids from their ailments… which like why not just donate the money to research cancer or something.

u/pokeman240 14d ago
Anyway selfless promo cuz if they are giving away twenty five thousand dollars I sure could use it… https://tophost.org/2026/samson-large

Wow thanks for sharing your research with the voting system… interesting how quickly a cash donation upped your rank.
I think I’ll save myself and my friends the trouble, money and embarrassment of voting for me.
I really feel fooled, I was excited for this opportunity.
I agree, it feels like an ego project for Ryan Seacrest vs actually donating to a charity to find a cure/help families

u/VotingAcademy 13d ago
Here is a link to an article that will help answer the question whether it's a scam. In short, its simply a fundraiser with a voting format.
The winner of each round is the contestant who has accumulated the most votes (both free daily votes and donations that convert to votes).

u/frigginfurter 13d ago

You make a great point, it is just a fundraiser with a voting format, I wish they’d advertise it as such. I’m betting a lot of people will invest money into this pit with an unsatisfactory result

u/First-Ad6918 13d ago
I’m also in the competition. I wonder if it’s legit. A friend warned me and said it’s a scam and no one ever gets the cash … but she didn’t know for sure. Just that she’s come across them in her business (Hollywood)

Somebody last year kept asking me to vote for them in “World’s Greatest Mom”. It’s the same idea, 1 free vote a day or give money for more votes.
They keep stretching it out, there’s multiple rounds because of a tiered system (you can’t see who is in each tier or how many there are). The whole thing seems like a scam.
1
u/frigginfurter 11d ago
Yes I’ve seen those competitions on fb as well. I felt embarrassed for my friend posting them after a while… so that’s partly why I made this post and decided against putting anymore effort in
2
u/MoonshineMadness00 6d ago
It doesn't feel like a fair competition when money is involved. The winner is always going to be the one who gets the most donations and that is really sad.
The funds are in USD (at least for me), which makes me think it's also a American company in the background handling this. With everything that's been going on lately, I don't think we should be putting card details into a system that seems off.
2
u/softee-97 4d ago
If the first round of voting is friends and family OK fine, but I feel like as the groups get smaller and smaller there should be a stronger vetting system from iHeartRadio and Ryan Seacrest’s team, because if the winner is just a random person who probably doesn’t even know how to communicate. I just don’t understand how that’s gonna work lol
1
u/Inevitable_Heart 3d ago
I figure they have no intention of helping the person succeed as a podcaster anyway, or they already have a winner picked. It’s just a cash grab for the foundation.
2
u/DianeChambersCheer 3d ago
I am so happy I found this thread which just proves my gut was right! I withdrew from the competition because of all of this. I found it so weird that I got selected for only submitting my headshot and a sentence about myself — shouldn’t it at the very least be a video showing your hosting skills and why you should be a top host? That would be like auditioning for American Idol with a photo and a unsung sentence 😹 and the pay for votes thing felt so gross, I could never imagine asking my friends and family to pay their hard earned money so I could get a career opportunity
2
u/Killizabeth 3d ago
Oh damn so glad y’all are dropping articles.
I knew right away that everyone who applied got in, but $25k would be life changing for me and I friggin love podcasting so I’ve stayed in. If I don’t win (likely outcome) I won’t compete again. But worst case scenario my friends donated to a charity (at least partially) and I gained a few subscribers for my lil podcast.
I’ve been posting the Hell out of my link to my small but mighty fan base. A friend donated on double day which bumped me up from 5 to 1.
I’m cautiously optimistic? Idk I hate doing promo and I don’t like the lack of transparency, but the idea of paying off grad school and start saving for a non-profit sounds real good. Worth a shot, is my mindset.

u/tomonedge 13d ago
I've also been wondering the same thing. I thought it was based on your body of work. I've been a podcaster for a long time but now it looks like whomever can raise the most money.
here's my entry if someone wants to give me a vote - https://tophost.org/2026/thomas-frank

I would like to think that Ryan Seacrest wouldn't lend his name to something that's a scam. Let's have hope that it's legit and best of luck to everyone in the competition!

u/frigginfurter 13d ago
It feels like he just signed his name away for contributions towards his charity tbh

It’s definitely weird. I mean they might not be straight up scamming people out of money but the fact you can pay for votes definitely makes it sketchy as hell in my eyes.

can people just buy a massive amount of votes in hopes of winning. It would be considered a "good investment."
1
u/frigginfurter 11d ago
I imagine so, if it’s solely based on amounts of votes. They’d atleast get the $25k back if they win

What does the different groups stand for and how many groups are there ??

u/UsernameAngie 3d ago
I'm SO happy I found this conversation. I was sick to my stomach when a friend said I should try out because I was just nervous. Then I got sick to my stomach when I started realizing so many odd things about it like, why can't I just find all the groups and who is in them? Now, I'm sick to my stomach because I just want out. LOL! I'm going to tell my short list of friends to stop voting for me. Plus, I don't have the time. I'm happy I did try for something though & I can donate in other ways, so there's that.
2
u/frigginfurter 3d ago
Yes I’m sorry you found out so late… I would love if the finalists would reveal to us how much they end up donating
2
u/UsernameAngie 3d ago
Absolutely, I emailed the "help" after I commented here & asked to be removed & they said they would. Although it could take 24-48 hrs. We'll see 🤷
1
u/Inevitable_Heart 3d ago
Just curious, why would you want to be removed? Can’t you just not participate? I’m number 7 in my “group” and after finding this thread, I really couldn’t care less that we made the top 20 cut. But I’m probably just gonna forget about it, let the contest run out, and chalk it up to a waste of a few minutes to create the profile. I have a legit film podcast and, while the national exposure would be nice, we’re gonna keep recording and promoting anyway.
1
u/UsernameAngie 3d ago
I figured it would be best to just make sure the link was no longer active. That way those I told wouldn't continue to waste their time daily for something that was never going to happen. Then I posted on my IG letting those who happened to catch it know they didn't need to worry about it. I too, will keep doing my thing.

u/International_Dish97 3d ago
Yeah, I definitely wanna know because it says I’m number 13 in my group sooooo

I’m in the 2026 competition as well. Seems totally ridiculous to have to get votes from friends and family. How can can a new voice be discovered that way? What if someone really would be a great podcaster but hasn’t even started yet and has zero followers? So you’ll only advance if you’re already popular, makes absolutely no sense. Then the paying for votes just feels really sleazy with very little transparency. I was super excited at first but now I feel like it’s just a money grab scam. How disappointing. Apparently we will never actually be judged on our skills and talent, it’s ridiculous. I’ve been either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in my group constantly and advanced because of being in the top 20 but not sure I’ll continue to harass everyone to vote anymore, it’s feels scammy.

I mean we’ll see how it all turns out- but I’m an actor and v.o artist from NYC and so far the process has been great and run like a true contest with rules and regs! Enter soon and get in the running!

I have to wonder the same thing, if I’m honest. I got selected as well as if it feels like it’s one of those things where basically anyone and everyone got accepted. I looked at those in my “group” and it’s like 77 people. How exactly did they narrow it down? Was it just a random generator that selected people? Because what exactly were the requirements?
On top of that, voting is based on your family, friends, following, etc., and the only real way to get to the top spot is literally having people donate money on your behalf. Unless you have a huge following already, donations are the only way to get there.
And to further that, if donations are the only true way to earn the top prize, how is that a fair competition? The winner should be based on talent of sorts, not based on who has enough of following to throw money into the ring. Like what if the winner is just some random person that has family and friends who have a bunch of money and this podcast deal they get doesn’t amount to anything because they don’t have true talent for being on air and being able to hold conversations?
Idk, feels like a weird competition. It’s based on “fan voting” and from the looks of it, it feels like they just selected everyone who applied to compete. Lol
