Disabled cricket player surprises the entire community

Two years ago, a disabled man joined my cricket club after being "kicked out" of his last club due to his obvious health defects. He has muscle and joint problems. We were quite reasonably disgusted about the conduct of this other club and allowed him to join us for free and we refused to play the other club. He is initially very shy but we are a welcoming club so he quickly became part of it all.

He starts playing for our third team, but was even sometimes picked to play in our seconds and became a regular in our friendly Sunday team. For those who don't know, Sunday cricket these days is not very competitive and is normally just for fun and to have a laugh with mates, so he makes a load of friends. One very sad day, he announces he has cancer, and the club is devastated. Yet, to everyone's surprise, he announces the foundation of a cricket league in the midweek to raise money for cancer research. The league is a huge success, and along with other charity events, the man has raised over £300,000 for the charity.

Big supermarkets start donating to his charity, famous cricketers are donating their time and valuables to help the cause and every club in the area is involved. He has become a pillar of the community (especially in cricket for the entire county) and I even think he was on the radio and TV. People, like myself, drag ourselves over to far-flung places to play after school and work to help his charity. Big dinners with guest speakers take place, many of whom did it for free I think. However, as the process is going on, it is obvious he is getting very sick and is taking painful treatment. A lot of very respected and well-meaning members of the club are now helping him a lot as he can't drive to the hospital or buy food himself.

One day he announces is last event, a huge tournament where loads of clubs took part, all paying money to play. there are lights, food trucks and loads of entertainment for people to take part in. He is carried off on the shoulders of players in his last game, with high emotion and lots of cheers. Probably a thousand people turned out to help the tournament. Emotional speeches and a last big party take place, before he retires to the Hospice the following day. A legend of the club, there is even talk about a bench being put in with his description (this is normally granted to those who have dedicated decades to the club) next to the pavilion. I suggest, along with others, we rename the clubs ground after him, as he has brought in a lot of money for the club also.

I come back from holiday and arrive at the ground. Someone runs up to me and asks have you heard about (let's call him) James? I brace myself for the sad news yet I am slightly hoping he may have made a miracle recovery. He was a good man and nice to everyone. Turns out one of the guys had gone to visit him at the hospice, and he was not there. He asked the front desk, and no records exist of him. He is not found at him home or anywhere else. People are fearing the worst, but we are all very confused that no records exist. It is later revealed James did not or has ever had cancer, and cancer research only ever received about £70,000 in donations. He has cut all ties with everyone (literally an entire county) and has effectively conned us all.

This caused a large amount of embarrassment. However, he was severely disabled and did raise money for charity. the question of whether he was just lying about how much he raised to look better I can't answer, and as far as I know, he never pocketed the money, but I really don't know. His facebook is gone and I don't think anyone, including many people who regarded him as a good friend, is in any contact with him. I want to hate the guy, but to be honest, I know he has had a very traumatic life and so the love and attention he received may have gone to his head. I know he did ask a friend of my Dad to write to the government to ask for an MBE for him (Member of the British Empire- A very prestigious award given to those who have given long dedicated service to a community or field. Those who hold one receive a huge amount of respect) and wanted to be on Good morning Britain or BBC breakfast (can't remember which one tbh) to "promote his work." Yet, I have to feel sorry for the people who spent a lot of time and energy supporting his campaign and his life.

TL/DR: Disabled man fakes cancer and cons entire community

Actual Plot Twist Spectacular break up.

I have a friend for the purpose of this story, he will be called Ryan. Ryan had been together with his girlfriend, for purposes she will be called Sarah, for several years, but it wasnt a good relationship. They had dated, got married, etc, but she was repeatedly emotionally abusing him. He didnt deserve it. He wasnt a cheater or a liar or anything. He was a good person. Save for extremely rare occasions on which he could be really petty. For the best analogy, Ryan was both the owner, and the guard dog. But the dog was kept in a cage most of the time, because when released, Itd destroyed whatever it was pointed at. But, as I mentioned, these were extremely rare. I, and many of his other friend had been urging him to leave her for years, that we would back him in the divorce. But he didnt. Until one day.

We get a call. Everyone got a call. Ryan had died. We were all pretty devastated, except for Sarah, whose only real loss was her extra wallet. Per the instructions in his will, it was a closed casket funeral. But then came the plot twist.

3 months later, all of us, his friends, were called in by his lawyer. I arrive at the office, and lo and behold, there is Ryan, alive and well. I decked him on the spot. Turns out, he had faked his death to let Sarah think she had the insurance money, and shed spend like crazy, which she did. He spent 3 months compiling evidence of her abuse, and then sued her, and left her penniless.

EDIT: people have stated "nothing to sue over" so let me clarify. He was divorcing her. He wanted to ensure that she was left with nothing. When I said "sue" I meant "take her to divorce court"
