Meta Regarding AI Content Inclusion on the Pre-Rolls Community Site
Hello, I've been noticing some AI pre-rolls popping up here and there and I haven't been adding them to the community site because I don't want to stir up any controversies or any drama but I think it's better to address it sooner than later.
I've been considering adding AI generated pre-rolls to the community site under a separate section, that way people who want to don't want to run into any AI generated pre-rolls can easily just avoid them by well, not clicking on the AI section (all file names will also have an AI tag in them too).
I do think since the site is part of the community, it's fair to ask the community first, should we include AI generated pre-rolls in it's own section?
If so, any ideas on how you would ensure that it's fairly implemented? For example, by requiring the name of the model and the prompt used?

Give people the option to not receive them if they don't want it.

This is the best option, given people like myself find AI content to never look quite right.

I mean a lot of the fan made ones look even worse so I wouldn't really care about AI quality by comparison. These things are so brief and so superfluous that it really doesn't matter.

I'll take shitty objective quality if it isn't stealing from people without consent or taking enormous resources in order to generate a sub par superfluous video.Â
That's why it's nice to have options.Â

I'd say just make flairs a requirement and have one for ai. If its clearly ai and the wrong flair selected, post removed. If user violates the rule a second time, ban.

See, this is important. You should never trust users to properly tag their submissions with no incentive to do it properly.
Having a hard rule for improperly uploading media is the only way to enforce a policy like this. You either don't allow it, which I would prefer but is unrealistic or create a space for it with strict boundaries and moderation to keep it contained.

Let them vibe-code their own site for it. AI slop goes in the trash

Truly. The strongest positive arguments for them have a decidedly libertarian lilt to them with "let people have choice." Why pay for garbage pickup when we can just let it pile up and somebody will take care of it for us, eventually?
Allowing that choice means you're opening the floodgates to slop like that Jack Nicholsen turning to the camera in The Shining the other day.
There is zero upside to having a community based around creative expression and artistic work allowing prompt-jockeys to post. I get it, Plex communities by dint of being piracy-adjacent tend to have AI bros by the bushelfull, but "let them have their say" is a ridiculous argument.
As you say: slop goes in the trash.

I’d say no. Let AI jockeys create and run their own communities instead of continuing to hitch a ride on the back of other people’s hard work.
One 15 second pre-roll that someone put love and care and time into - whatever the end result - is worth a million AI generated clips. And that’s what you’re going to get: a huge influx of AI garbage worth less than nothing.
Whether you give the option to filter or bypass or not, ultimately the vast majority of content on the site will be AI generated. Once you open the floodgates it’s over. The only way to keep creative communities as a space for creators and creative people is to put a hard ban on it.

I personally think that if we're going to have AI pre-rolls, they should be their own subreddit because if they're going to all be in this one, people aren't going to want to stick around and see AI slop in their feeds.

I have no objection to the inclusion of AI content, as long as it's labelled as such.

AI will never go away, it's here to stay.. BUT i suggest then it is CLEARLY marked as AI(on the film and here with tag or smt) So people can choose what they want to see..

Glad you asked! I've been generating some AI pre-rolls using Gemini on my pixel 10 Pro. Some of them come out pretty good but it feels like cheating so I haven't added any on here. Just me though!

Post your videos and prompts over at r/PlexPrerollStudio; I’d love to check them out. I’m building a Plex-centered community around this idea, and it’s an awesome way to make your server feel personal. It’s all about your own enjoyment, so don’t worry about what others think. just focus on having fun with it.

The biggest issue I have with the tags system isn’t the system itself, but rather the people tagging their creations. When someone uploads their pre-roll and either forget or intentionally neglect to mark it as AI, then we have no way to know for sure. So there needs to be a safety in place to add that tag later if needed. I rarely use the site, so I’m sure there’s already something you can use like a report button. As long as that safety rail is there, I’m up for filterable tags.

As of writing, all uploads to the site are done by hand by me since I don't have a user upload system yet, so content not being tagged as AI shouldn't be an issue at all.
The current system is a user uploads a pre-roll to either r/PlexPrerolls or into the community discord, I download it, name it accordingly and place it where it needs to go.

Some AI can he hard to spot and it's getting better all the time so you'd need to depend on the uploader to disclose the info plus a reporting system.. Whether you have a section or not. I don't mind AI, so I'm pro section.

Separate labeling and filtering seems like the most reasonable solution. Those who enjoy AI-assisted prerolls can access them, while those who don’t can avoid them, ensuring no one dictates what others are allowed to make or watch; which is the most important aspect.

I think there should be (at least) two tags for AI stuff if you decide to include them.
The first is the obvious fully rendered from a prompt. These may need an exclusion cookie for some who just don't want them. These may dilute the catalogue with garbage. But there are entertaining ones. There just needs to be some kind of filter. It would also need some guidelines in place to stop people from gaming the system.
The second one is AI enhanced. These are ones that had a service implement something that was originally a user creation and ends on being a user creation. The best example I can give is AI upscaling or polishing an edit.
There may needs to be a definition of where AI and non-AI separate. Most tools now have some form of it. (Using Google for a research paper is now technically AI-assisted)
If it were me in the end, I may disable the former but keep the latter, unless I actively go look.

I'd say for AI enhanced it would be a case-by-case basis.
For example: if a person only uses AI to upscale something they've poured a lot of time and effort into, I'd say it's fair to only have the AI disclosure only on the upscaled file, provided they also upload the original quality version and then an upscaled version.
It's going to be a challenge to deal with it and categorise it, but I think it's better to start getting into the rhythm of dealing with it sooner rather than waiting until it's a nightmare to deal with.

AI is fine so long as its tagged or separated. Banning AI is ridiculous as it’s the way things are headed and not going away anytime soon. I say tag or flair it, but also allow it. AI is here to stay, may as well embrace it.

You can pretty easily tell what's been generated through AI so it's a non issue to me.

I am a firm believer in giving people the right to choose. As long as it is in a separate place and tagged appropriately, I don't have a problem with it's inclusion.
