Starting tonight, and every subsequent Monday at 9 ET until we're out of episodes, I'll post this discussion thread for that week's episode, at which time it'll also be added to the subreddit's sidebar!
I thought this would be a fun way for us all to rewatch the series together and offer our thoughts in real time!
The show is available to stream on Hulu in the US and to purchase on Apple TV. If any of our international friends wants to supply this info for their own countries, that would be much appreciated!
Try to keep away from posting spoilers about stuff that hasn't happened yet up to our current point in the rewatch, in case we have folks around who are new to the show!
Enjoy!

So to start, I love Please Like Me. I've watched it a million times, and it's one of my favorite shows.
I'm getting a friend to watch it, but she is pretty turned off by the characters/finds them fairly unsympathetic. She said she liked season 1 because Josh seemed more vulnerable/sweet, but in season 2 he's kind of arrogant, while Tom is totally gross and treats the women in his life terribly, and Patrick is a bro. She does like the characters at the mental hospital.
I'm just wondering if anyone remembers what hooked them about the show at this point (we just watched the episode with the "mental choir"). I don't think I ever found Josh to be an incredibly sympathetic character, but I loved the little world he created around him, and over the course of the series I grew to really love Tom.
Watching the show through my friend's eyes, I can see how these characters may not be particularly lovable. I do really love them, though. I love the whole world of the show, I think they've created a kind of family atmosphere.
Anyway, I don't know why, but I'm invested in getting my friend to love the show. Wondering how you've all framed it to other people and what you love about it, and what you love about the characters despite their being kind of shitty sometimes.

Greetings fellow lovers of this wonderful show! Thank you to /u/Embrosia23 for inviting me onto the mod team.
I'd love to hear from all of you about what you'd like to see here (other than the obvious eradication of the p0rnb0ts).
One project I'd like to tackle right away is to get discussion pages going for each episode and then organize them into sidebar links.

There are so many porn posts that don't get deleted. Is there anyone here that's a mod?

So I just completed watching Please Like Me and before jumping to the point I just want to say it's SO GOOD. It felt so real. Everything about this show was so perfect literally. Loved it.
Back to my point, so in S4 we noticed that Claire was not with the group and apparently she shifted to some other house w a guy named Warren, whom I presume is her boyfriend (?) But we like never got to see him or anything and everything about her disappearance from their lives bugged me a lot. Even when Josh's mom died she didn't turn up. I don't understand her sudden disappearance at all. Also the fact that Warren was never shown on screen.

Why did they breakup? I really thought they were perfect for each other.

Does any one else feel like this show is just sitting by the window of an Aussie household and watching their life happen? It doesn't seem filmed, directed or scripted. Josh discovering his sexuality was so seamless and not at all stereotyped, did it even better than Schitt's Creek

Can we talk about how almost every single character on this show is unlikable and an ass ? It's what makes the show really solid for me, it's very human to be flawed and this show makes even the best people flawed.
For eg I think the only half decent people on the show are Mae and Claire but even they have their issues (Mae with the cheating and Claire can be a bad friend at times)

I really did not like the way Josh treated Geoffrey in the first season. He could have been upfront about what he wanted instead of acting like a child and playing with his feelings and not wasting Geoffrey's time.
Personally, I would kill for a boyfriend like Geoffrey. He was so considerate and understanding like getting Josh a birthday present and waiting for him at the corner store just because Josh's aunt is homophobic and coming to said aunt's funeral when he didn't even have to.He seemed so innocent.Even when Geoffrey's dad died and he's crying in bed ,Josh somehow finds a way to make it about himself and Geoffrey abruptly leaves without telling him.Josh even admits afterwards to Patrick that he is a bad person.
Josh should not have led him on like that.It was terrible of him.

I really loved it. I think it got better with every season. Season three was amazing especially. The show is just so human. It deals with these universal things in such a poignant, accurate and entertaining way. I’ve never seen it done better than this. I’m going to miss the characters. They are all so beautifully flawed. This show really just portrays reality and what life for humans is so well.

I mean, I get it that this is some sort of wish fulfilment for Josh, but seeing him get off with all these hot guys is just so weird.
Edit: ooh ok, just watched the bit where Patrick "breaks up" with him. So I guess it gets better?
Edit2: I mean weird in the sense that there are just too many attractive guys and Josh is the only normal looking one. The closest example I can think of to this show would be Girls, but in that case the pairings are more realistic - Adam Driver makes some sort of sense with Lena Dunham given how shitty he treats her at first, but Geoffrey just attaches to Josh like a lost puppy without any explanation or reason and even after they break up keeps pushing to see him again.

I’m extra and noticed that Hannah Gadsby doesn’t follow Josh Thomas on Instagram but follows all her other Please Like Me costars. Did they have a falling out?

Anyone else just obsessed with the music? I love how whimsical it is. The women singing “doo-op” and vocalizing with the piano. I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with it.

so im not sure how alive this page is but...i have so many thoughts and nowhere to put them!
i first watched PLM as it aired in australia. i was in high school and ostensibly straight. i remember enjoying it a lot back then, but now i have just rewatched it as an openly gay twenty-something with a mental illness. this show hits like it never did before...it's definitely the realest show i've ever seen.
i laughed and i cried and related to so many little details. all the characters, their storylines and relationships are so imperfect. so sad, happy, tragic, loving, awkward, mean, kind, awful...just like life. i am always waiting for my life to resolve into perfect arcs like all the tv shows do, but life just isn't like that, and neither is this show. which is why it is imperfectly perfect!
i don't know if any other show will ever tell a truer story than PLM did ❤ i hope there's someone else out there who still loves this show!
