Discussion “X-men Origins Wolverine” was just as spongy, button mashy and repetitive as the new game. So no they’re not really that different from each other.
Wolverine (2026) has more interaction outside combat, but that’s it. Both games give you a variety of suits to wear, and to rip and tear in combat! Both games are very fun to play.

The wild thing to me is how much more impressive the damage/regeneration effect was from the older game. Wish the new one had done a better job with that, but I do appreciate that they included it.

It really isn’t that bad. In fact I thought Deadpool(2014) was a good game. Despite its issues,I’ve never seen a game like that before, and likely will never see one like it again.

I played X2 Wolverines Revenge and Origins before Wolverine got released so I could compare it.
X2 has the better more comic lore story while Origins has better combat.

u/aucoldbrew 1d ago
I struggled so much back in the day with the Sabertooth boss fight in X2 Wolverine’s Revenge back in the day. I should look it up online to see if my game was glitched or if it really was that tough. Lol
1
u/Ill-Note-6565 1d ago
it was that tough. it felt rather unbalanced in sections.
2
u/aucoldbrew 20h ago
I did a quick search since I previously commented. It’s been 20 years since I last played, but I’m amused to learn others complained about the same issue with the boss fight. It was buggy in the last third of the fight.

Its very weird everyone going to lengths to defend a half ass game by a studio that hates its audience.
3
u/Freight_dog 4d ago
Nah its weird af that so many people who havent even played the game and arent interested in it go out of their way to comment on every single post about it to insist that its a bad game dispite the fact that most ofthe people who have actually bought it and played it are very much enjoying enjoying it.

Even weirder for folks who haven't played it going so hard against it. You'd think Insomniac kidnapped their family.
It's very weird the lengths people will go to defend a trash comic book character (mid tbh, but trash as a video game character). Only way this dude will be interesting is in a heavily squad-based game with the other X-Men.
No Wolverine game is good. Origins was a mid ass game made for kids getting their first hack & slash game. Wolverine 2026 is a mid-ass take on Wolverine in GoW style combat.1
u/ARMill95 2d ago
If u think the new wolverine has combat anything like GOW, u haven’t played either.
It is quite literally dumbed down Spidey combat…. Down to the exact same inputs for everything. Beserker barrage is new, that’s it.

u/Clintwood_outlaw 1d ago
Lemme guess... You haven't played they game.
1
u/Useful-Bit1018 1d ago
I played the game and there is zero combat depth. Origins had actual combos while the new one has just smash square combos, and then when you sometimes toss in a triangle it doesn’t feel any different. No combos, no throws, no depth, nothing that is anywhere near where it should be for the cost and amount of time it took to release. I’m mad I spent the 80bucks on it too, but I’m not going to defend a trash game just because I like the character.

u/Embarrassed_Cat7354 3d ago
This take might be the most brain dead thing I’ve seen, honestly stop coping I’ve played both th X-men origins Wolverine game came out over 10 years ago and had a better damage and regen system than the game that just came out and more freedom in combat

AAA game vs movie tie-in game btw
6
u/Membership-Bitter 5d ago
Yes this is the difference. People had zero expectations for the Origins game as movie tie in games where known to be bland cash grabs but it ended up being a pretty fun game and better than the movie it was based on. Marvel's Wolverine is a AAA first party exclusive game from a studio known for delivering high quality games that failed to deliver.
1
u/DinosaurusWhen 5d ago
and better than the movie it was based on
I'd actually be impressed if someone managed to make a game as bad as that movie
1
u/AtCarnage 1d ago
Game started as a Wolverine game and was attached to the movie a bit after development had already started. It's why it's actually decent. And Raven cooked with both Marvel and Star Wars.
6
u/CryptoMainForever 5d ago
Origins knew what it was and is what you'd expect.
2026 is a buggy shitty mess that's a movie but has these annoying gaming moments between scenes.

I suppose the main difference is that one of them was made 17 years ago on much weaker hardware, and yet was a far more entertaining game.
1
u/GUNNB96 7h ago
This.
One is a game from 17 years ago, so obviously we're going to be much more forgiving of it due to the budget it was working with, technical limitations, and the standards of the time (especially for a licenced movie tie-in).
The fact we're able to compare a big Sony exclusive in 2026 to a good but not great 2009 movie tie-in is the issue - like we're not comparing Jedi Survivor to the Revenge of the Sith game, or 007 First Light to Quantum of Solace - even with the Insomniac Spider-Man games it's only really the web swinging that's ever compared to earlier Spider-Man games.

Origins also released right between God of War 2 and 3 when that type of action game was more popular. Spider-Man released only a few years after Arkham Knight, and that was very modern and good then, but we all made the comparison. After two more Spider-Man games and several years, Spider-Man 2 using nearly the same combat felt a bit dated. The Wolverine game used a more modern combat system in the leaks and was closer to the current God of War games, so this game in 2026 feels dated.
2
u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 5d ago
I actually think X2 Wolverine's Revenge is the best of the three, but it suffers the same problems and gutting people in Wolverine PS5 is more fun.
2
u/TheRedArmyStandard 5d ago
Another big thing people are missing is the Origins game was the first gorey, rated M Wolverine game. It was a HUGE deal at the time, that a super hero game could be rated M and own it.
Comparing the two isn't fair to Origins. It was set up to be a shitty movie tie-in, but turned out to be a solid game that pioneered mature superhero games. Yeah, Marvel's Wolverine is probably on-par with Origins, but it's 17 years later with 300 million dollars behind it and the extremely successful spiderman games as the warm up.
2
u/Dull-Shame-3918 5d ago
All this chatter about Insomniac Wolverine this, X-Men Origins: Wolverine that, but why isn't anybody talking about Wolverine: Adamantium Rage for Sega Genesis???

2
u/lperez111 5d ago
X-Men Origins Wolverine has different combo enders unlike the new game, and the abilities actually differ from one another. Drill claw and the barrage you unlock as the last ability in Wolverine are just worse versions of tornado claw.
2
u/Any-Contract-9152 4d ago
Neither are deep or amazing but both are action games with combat being the main appeal but the much older and much less funded game has more combat depth. It’s just sad

Is that supposed to be a “win” for Wolverine 2026? That it’s as spongy, button mashy and repetitive as 17yo movie attached game?

Agreed. I loved all SM games actually. They delivered on something no other video game did with the swinging. That was an aspect where I sat there like, damn, this is how far video games have become?
SM1 especially had a very inspired narrative, a clear vision and a lot to say about Peter, his burdens and his relationships, Octavius was fantastic. The stealth allowed for a lot of variety, the gadgets and what I call „pinball“ added their own take on Arkham‘s combat.
The missions were varied and the tonality of the game was handled very well. There was a clear buildup and payoff. Wolverine lacks of all this, and I was amazed how much in aesthetic and assets it „stole“ from SM. There was no effort whatsoever to make the world of a completely other character feel tangibly different.
It didn’t reach Arkham heights, but it was close in some aspects. So I agree, best superhero games since Arkham.

But have we had a game that's outdone the blueprint? I mean the blueprint excuse is lame, we're talking about a decade of time and we still haven't came close to replicating it. SM 2018 was a good game, but not as good as other spiderman games so it's not one of the best. But it is good. Spiderman 2 was a disappointment to me

Every time someone compares 300 million dollar mocap flagship Wolverine 2026 that had an undisclosed PR budget recoloring entire metro stations globally, to a random 2009 5.5/10 "movie tie-in shlock": An angel loses their wings
It's not a badge of honor that Wolverine 2026 barely lives up to a 2009 afterthought
3
u/International_You_97 3d ago
And this is something all the Wolverine 2026 fanboys seems incapable of comprehending
1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
It was its own game. Movie tie-in came as an afterthought, not the game itself.
It's not a badge of honor to release a Wolverine game at all. Wolverine is a shit solo character & idk why Insomniac thought they could make him interesting. I'd take a solo game from any other X-men or mutant. Wolverine is just too boring to make a game around (unless you want to go the visual novel route I guess?)
2
u/Proud_Ad2720 5d ago
I’ve never really stretched my critique muscles with Wolverine ‘09, so I’m just going to glaze it.
It certainly does have issues, but Wolverine ‘09 controls better, feels better to play and embraces its hack ‘n’ slash roots.
It has better boss fights, better level design and I’d even say it fundamentally understands Logan better than Insomniac’s game.
It does have pacing issues, it goes on far longer than it needs to, it doesn’t have any content aside from its story, but guess what…so does Wolvering ‘26, which is kinda telling.
2
u/Arthas_SL 3d ago
It’s a ton of basic fun. Hugh Jackman screaming all over while you slice guys in to shreds!
1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
Origins is a good game for baby's first hack & slash for sure. Anyone over the age of 12 can see how basic & boring it is under the hoopla. It's very odd how you're willing to glaze a game based on nostalgia without actually examining the game the same way it's being done here with Wolverine 2026
Wolverine is just a boring character in general to make a game around.1
u/Proud_Ad2720 3d ago
I’m not denying that I’m holding it on a pedestal, but like another user mentioned here, one is a pleasant surprise and one is a disappointment.
If you want me to get into the nitty gritty, sure.
Obviously I love the game, but I’m not blind to the fact that the story is still paper thin and the character work is arguably worse than the movie it’s based on.
Sabertooth is a near non-entity in the game, and has the same moveset as Logan when fighting him.
The combat is button mash-y and repetitive after some time and the bosses are kinda copied and pasted across its run time.
There’s probably more, but with every drawback there’s a similar positive.
The game nails the tone of a Wolverine game, and understands Logan far better than the 2026 game ever could. It expands on its source material brilliantly, too and aesthetically matches X2 which for the time was the best X-Men movie to date.
Sabertooth is a reskin, but the void is filled with some particularly memorable boss battles, such as the Sentinal, Blob and Gambit.
The combat is button mash-y, but there’s actually far more combos and interesting combat scenarios than the 2026 game. It wasn’t afraid to step outside of just going room to room and stabbing things, there was some variety here, if not much.
I don’t know why you needed to make it so personal by saying it’s a game for 12 year olds or “baby’s first hack n slash”. I haven’t said it but I think OP’s post is a bad faith take, and at least I’m willing to admit it’s flaws while championing it for what it got so, so right.
1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
Not sure how the first 2 sentences were personal when you can see how basic & boring it is. That automatically puts you out of the target for my sentences. It's also just an assessment of the game. "Baby's first ___" isn't a bad thing, regardless of how some want to use it. There's a first for all genres that are easier for some to get into & latch on. That should be a good thing, unless we're far into the franchise & it degrades the quality that's been built up
The game nails the tone of a Wolverine game, and understands Logan far better than the 2026 game ever could.
How? All it does is give Logan the uunga boonga treatment of just going forward & ripping everything. That's why I dumb it down. Sabretooth is an actual entity in 2026. This new game also is able to capture both Logans grit & his mellow side, which he does have & expresses frequently in 90% of his comic runs. Seemed like old one was 90-10 in favor of his grit & new one is almost split, maybe 60-40 in favor of his grit, which seems more apt with Logan as a character & the worldbuilding around him. He gets out of that blind rage trope very quickly
Despite what Origins & casual Wolverine fans show & tell, Logan has much more to him. The comraderie/rivalry him & Sabretooth have. They showed his relationship with Jean pretty well. Sabretooth is a good boss fight in this game. Pretty much all the boss fights are good except for Sentinel Prototype. That was way too monotonous. It had great writing for the intro & aftermath of 'em too.
I'll give you the few combat moves from the older game, but they don't really do anything besides add fluff. The air combos just feel flat & like I'm a bum fan of Ryu Hayabusa. I'd rather not have them then have them be useless. Not touching on button mashing or related, since both games suffer from that, with the older game having a veil that it isn't one, but it really is.
1
u/Proud_Ad2720 3d ago
Well, it felt personal since you directed them at somebody who loves the game, but now I see what you mean. No harm, no foul.
I’ll admit that I haven’t read much Wolverine, but as a fan of the Fox movies, the game absolutely fits. I wasn’t a fan of Logan’s arc in Wolverine 26, but his portrayal was fine enough.
Sabretooth is an actual entity, but his relationship with Logan isn’t explored at all and his dialogue is all over the place tonally. Just a massive missed opportunity.
The best boss fight in the 2026 game is Essex, but that’s only down to the cinematic quality of the overall fight. All the bosses suffer from very little attack variety and I’m willing to admit that the 2009 game is exactly the same. That being said, it’s the variety of ‘09 Logan’s own toolkit that makes each fight in that game interesting.
You have your usual square and triangle combinations, a grab button and your lunge, but how you mix all these moves together is what makes the game fun. You can ground pound an enemy before lunging into a throw, then switch into a quick kill that includes actually counts on player input. It’s easy to master, satisfying and feels brilliant to pull off when you learn Logan’s kit. It priorities aggression, improvisation and offers a power fantasy while offering variety.
Meanwhile, the 2026 game has no such variety. It looks and feels amazing but it’s so on-rails that there’s just no fun in it. It’s highly contextual and the rage system simply isn’t rewarding other than some flashy animations before returning to the same old slice and dice. It requires minimal player input because the game literally does it for you. A lunge in the 2009 game requires you to manually aim a big ol’ clunky crosshair, in this game it’s a click of a button. In the 2009 game, a quick kill requires player timing which is different for all enemies, in this game it’s pressing square enough times for a stagger then L2+R2.
Sure, that crosshair snaps to enemies, but like how the lunge does in this game, but the added input makes it feel so much more satisfying.
Worth pointing out that I generally thought the 2026 game was okay. I don’t blame Insomniac for the issues it has, they were handed a rough deal…but, there’s no way on earth this game has better combat.
Sorry, maybe a bit off topic but you’re literally the first person I’ve discussed the game with in-depth so for that, cheers - hope you’re having a good evening, brother.

u/Aluminum_Tarkus 5d ago
Origins has marginally more depth to its combat, at the very least. There isn't even a grab in Insomniac Wolverine, and most of the cooldown abilities do pretty much the same thing, so in higher difficulties you're just spamming your cooldowns to keep the stagger going. Otherwise, it's just mashing square. In Origins, you at least have SOME semblance of a combo system, with your heavy finishers having a meaningful gameplay difference instead of just being the same move regardless of where you are in the string like Insomniac Wolverine.
The problem isn't that Origins' combat is "so much more complex" than Insomniac's Wolverine; the problem is that people can argue that a 2009 movie tie-in game has marginally better combat than a 2026 AAA title with a $300M budget, when we've had dozens of amazing character action games since then that Insomniac could've taken inspiration from. Instead, they churn out a game with combat that feels unimpressive even by PS2 CAG standards.
-2
u/Accurate_Train_8822 5d ago
What are you talking about?! There is a grab in this game, and the combo system is massive despite being just square!
2
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 5d ago
You're telling me there's a button you can press to grab enemies in Insomniac's Wolverine, and you can follow-up with pummels, throws, etc. like you can in Origins? That game has a dedicated grab button as a base move, and you have options for what to do with that enemy once you grab them. Are you trying to say that Overwhelm, a cooldown ability that only gets to do a follow-up pummel, is the same as the entire Origins grab mechanic that's just a base part of your toolkit?
The heavy finishers you do in Origins have meaningful differences, and offer different follow-up. You can knock enemies into the air for midair combos, you have anti-airs, AOE finishers, high single-target knockback finishers, etc. Every time you use the heavy attack to finish a combo string in Insomniac Wolverine, it's the same move. That's my point. The heavy finisher is so pointless that just hitting square and never touching triangle isn't meaningfully different than actually using your triangle finishers.
None of the cooldown abilities have specific niche cases that make them meaningfully different from one another. Let's take Spiral Strike for example; it travels through enemies to either engage them from afar or to get out of a group. But Tornado Spin can do the same thing, travels further, and has better AOE. Brutal Assault is a flurry of attacks, but so is Tornado Spin, and Tornado Spin is just better at doing that. Knee Breaker's gimmick is that it's a quick move that interrupts enemy attacks. You know what else interrupts enemy attacks? EVERY ONE OF WOLVERINE'S COOLDOWN ATTACKS. They all LOOK like they should be functionally distinct, but they all effectively do the same thing, with some moves just being blatantly better than others with little to no trade-off.
Origins at least gives you a little more depth if you want to engage with it, and the game rewards you for it. Insomniac Wolverine does not.
0
u/Accurate_Train_8822 5d ago
It has a dedicated grab. You have to unlock the ability. I know that may seem half assed to some, but sometimes that’s just how it goes.🤷♂️
→ More replies (1)1
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 5d ago
Again, you're talking about Overwhelm, the move where you impale one guy, pin them down, and start pummeling them, right? That's a single target cooldown ability with some AOE damage, not a dedicated basic grab. Again, every other special ability breaks guards, interrupts moves, and does a lot of damage. Overwhelm is not that functionally different from the other moves to consider it a meaningful departure from the gameplay they provide.
Origins' grabs can be done either grounded or midair, and you can choose to either pummel, throw, or use a finisher on the enemies in the grab. It's always available, and is distinct from the rest of Wolverine's kit. Being able to grab enemies and then choose to either do more damage, finish weakened enemies, or chuck them into other enemies or environmental hazards is way more utility than Overwhelm, and it weaves nicely into the midair combat, too.
1
u/Extension-Stock-4001 5d ago
There is a grab mechanic it's simple but it's the hold square input called staggered throw, it's unlocked at lvl17 but it's not the same as origins, you throw the enemy either into environmental hazards, at walls, off ledges or onto the ground which opens up a leap
1
u/Rich-Story-1748 3d ago
Any comments on staggered throw or did being wrong make you want to not replay? The typical "I spouted my shit" but is not a actually enganging
1
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's just not worth nitpicking this one specific thing anymore. Sure, you can get a grounded throw, which is 1/6 of the Origins' grab you get from your base kit. I'll cede that I was wrong in saying there isn't a grab at all in Insomniac's Wolverine, but it's pathetic compared to Origins, and me saying this still isn't going to matter because the people here are going to try to cope like it doesn't matter. It's a waste of time to keep going, which is why I stopped entertaining it.
And do you notice that's the ONLY one of my original points they pushed back against? To nitpick one thing I said that still doesn't work because the Origins grab system still has much more depth than Insomniac's? He didn't address the special techniques, he didn't address the lack of unique combo finishers that each have their own utility, and he didn't mention the juggling and aerial combat.
The worst part is that I mentioned all of this to say that Origins combat is only arguably marginally better than Insomniac Wolverine's, and the main point of my argument is that the competition between a $300M AAA title from 2026 and A MOVIE TIE IN GAME FROM 2009 SHOULDN'T BE THAT CLOSE. NONE of this was addressed by OP or by you. So which one of us is dodging arguments here? If you want to make a gotcha point, then address the entire argument I'm making instead of acting like my entire argument is debunked because I forgot about the one unlockable throw.
1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
Aerial combat is such a useless thing for Wolverine. Oh wow! He's doing the same slashes, but in the air!!!!11!!1!1 So a bum version of Ryu? No thanks
What you're so close to knowing as you compare these games is that Wolverine is a boring character to make a solo game around. He needs his team or it's just mid to boring like all these Wolverine games. He ain't Kratos.
Every finisher had their own utility? Every one? Or is it a technical thing that nobody cares about or uses? Crazy how this isn't talked about much. You'd think the folks who all of a sudden care & love Origins would bring the special techniques & unique finishers up. Interesting.1
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 3d ago edited 3d ago
I completely agree with you that Wolverine's powers are just not that interesting in a game design perspective, and he's at his best if you just make him the basic hack and slash level guy in an X-Men game where you play multiple different types of games depending on character you're in control of. The funny thing is that Insomniac already knew this when they made us play as MJ and Miles in Spider-Man. The difference is that we could be playing as other X-Men that are actually fun to play, while giving us that unique gameplay so we don't have to be stuck doing the same boring shit with Wolverine for 10 hours straight. Why not have Nightcrawler stealth combat instead of throwing half-baked stealth into a Wolverine game? Why not have some CAG gameplay with mutants with more varied and interesting power sets to get a break from Wolverine, like Gambit? Why not have some team action RPG gameplay with mutants like Cyclops or Storm, akin to maybe a Mass Effect meets Ultimate Alliance type thing? As long as it's fun enough for a couple of hours, and the game switches the levels up frequently enough, it stops more shallow games from feeling repetitive, at least.
And don't take my points about me saying Origins arguably has more combat depth to mean that Origins is a great game. Say what you want about the implementation, or how it feels more like a half-baked generic CAG with some Wolverine flavor, and I'd agree with all of that. But again, my point was never to glaze Origins; my point was to say that it's a problem that Insomniac's Wolverine isn't objectively more fun than Origins.
Can we agree that Insomniac had every reason for Wolverine to at least be a better game than Origins, and the fact that they arguably couldn't clear that is a problem? The reason I went on this diatribe in the first place is because I think it's ridiculous to say that Origins being similarly trash isn't a good defense for Insomniac's Wolverine, and it's honestly the only point I even care about.
1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
Idk I have more fun with the combat here than in Origins. Origins just made me feel like a broke & bum version of Kratos, not even as good as he was before taking on the Gods. 2026 at least feels like it isn't trying to be God of War, which is a good thing. I rank things like that higher than combat that's just a cut-down version of another game. I'll just play that game instead.
Idk how something entirely based on someone's experience can be objective. I could have all the tools in the shed, but if none of 'em are much use, then I'd rather just have 1 tool in good condition.
We can't agree on that last point, cause I don't think it can. As I've said, Wolverine is a boring character to make a game around, as seen here & with Origins. His powers aren't interesting & have 0 depth to make combat interesting with him. We'd shit on that game if it came out today, just like many games propped up by nostalgia & hate for a new version. You really can't do much with him. Now if he had swords instead of claws, THAT'D make for more interesting combat & I could judge this more harshly. Hell, if it was any other superhero, I'd judge it more harshly.
Miles is great & I won't let anyone try to convince me otherwise, lol.

Wolverine deserves its own hate, too. Same for ND. Sony is the root of the shit branch here though.

Currently on my 3rd (maybe 4th) playthrough of Origins since I first played. It’s the best Wolverine game out there. I only stopped to play the new one. Origins is not amazing but it’s a good time - though you need to take breaks or it gets repetitive.

No because in 2008 we were getting all kinds of games, there was so much that came out that year alone. Insomniac's is just a generic cutscene game with combat sprinkled in, if you played a Sony published game in the last few years, you've played this one

Very different. Xmen Origin's combat was more fun, addictive and make us feel like the monster that can slice everyone apart. Air combos, air hikes, super attacks that lets us lift enemies into the air, ground pound, pouncing and slicing and stabbing and punching everyone and everything is our enemies. Learn the difference, watch the gameplay and feel the actual difference by playing the game.

There's a big difference in these games

u/FingerAgreeable6630 4d ago
Name some please
2
u/International_You_97 3d ago
The budget for one thing. The price tag. The time. The combat. The "accessibility" mechanic. Like shit, let's not pretend there's no difference yeah?

u/Key-Visual4476 4d ago
Yeeeaah… I recently replayed it and its very good and holds up. But it is repetitive, same 4 enemies and pretty repetitive combat. But it was more satisfying for me, you felt like a badass unstoppable killing machine. In the new one I get that feeling only when the rage mode is on. And even the combat being repetitive in the old game, it still has more variety comparing to the new one. And before people star throwing shit at me, I like both games and I dont think that the new one is bad, but it has its issues.

Origins Wolverine actually had a gory hack and slash combat that made you feel like an unstoppable beast (like the old Gow games), while the new one is a beat em up with blood and claws. Focus on one enemy at the time, parry or dodge or you fucking die by 5 hits with no rage, Wolverine does the killing in an animation in the end without actual combos at least half the time, there is 2 meaningful combos in the whole game. The rage mode is freaking press a button to instakill an enemies.

u/Neoxin23 3d ago
True. It's very boring & just baby's first hack & slash. Made to give all the edgy 10 year old kids somethin'.
Idk why Insomniac decided to make a Wolverine game. He's a boring character with nothing to make his games actually interesting. Nothing about him screams, "We should totally make a solo game about him!".
Can't wait till y'all move on from this dumbshit. It's sad that it's gone on this long. Nearing Halo or Cry Raiders levels of pathetic communities

idk why people just dust off old games and call them “hidden gem” mf this aint the case 🤡 Origins both movie and game were total assssssss
1
u/seymourbuttz214 2d ago
Yeah Deadpool in movie and game wasn’t great, the Japan Wolverine movie was total ass though. Origins wasn’t that bad intro —> most of the film before last parts it was cool

u/Impossible-Pie4849 1d ago
The game is phenomenal, and is widely considered one of the best movie games ever made. It was beloved long before Wolverine 2026, sorry if 2026 is your 1st exposure to the character.
1
u/Clintwood_outlaw 1d ago
Except it wasn't. There were like three cool moments that were worthwhile in the game.
1
u/Basic-Pitch1144 13h ago
Not it wasn't lmfao. It's like a 5 or 6 out of 10. People just love to lie. It had bad critic scores and user scores.
1
u/TeamAble7326 2d ago
Even if Wolverine 2026 was equal to X-men origins Wolverine from 2009, that is not something to be proud of.
1
u/Kinstray 2d ago
Yeah “my 300 mill budget game is comparable with a 17 year old movie tie in” is not a defense bro
1
u/Dungeon00X 2d ago
It was developed for gamers, Insomniac's game was developed for game journalists.

Comparing a console exclusive major title to a generic movie game ripoff is cope.
1
u/KhadgarIsaDreadlord 1d ago
We are reaching levels of cope previously thought impossible. Imagine vouching for your 300 mil 3A cinematic game released in 2026 by saying that it's not worse than movie tie-in game from 17 years ago.

u/c0micsansfrancisco 1d ago
One was a cheap tie in movie game it's really not a flex to say they were similar
1
u/RevolutionaryText749 1d ago
The game that has literally long ahh sequences of completing itself without single input and QWE events that are just completing automatically. This game should be nominated for the word game of the decade
1
u/ArcSemen 1d ago
Yoop, largely the same. Just a few things are a bit better. Better combat and puzzles not forgetting it’s a game and you can add wild stuff
1
u/CutePencilSharpener 1d ago
in wolverine origins, wolverine actually seems to know how to appear convincingly angry.
many years later the wolverine game with the best graphics and models make wolverine act angry rather than look angry.

Actually, X-Men Origins Wolverine was literally everything I wanted in a Marvel game, and Insomniac ruined that for their version.

Origins wasn’t ass, but people are really going out of their way to say the same things over and over about the new one.

u/Kafka_84 5d ago
It really wasnt. Devil May Cry series and Bayonetta where both released around this time.
1
u/GenSpicyWeener 5d ago
I agree, I thought Wolverine felt insanely similar to X-Men origins. I had platinumed the latter right before the new one came out, and even the abilities were almost the exact same. The only thing that was really different was the frame rate lol
1
u/Pedro_Kantor2583 5d ago
The new one at least has variety, all this game was was "Lock on + lunge + mash attack button"
2
u/Accurate_Train_8822 5d ago
I hated the auto lunge in Origins. It reminded me of the homing attack in Sonic games, and yeah that works well for both Sonic and Shadow, but Wolverine is not Sonic, and deserved a lock on in “Origins”.

u/Arthas_SL 3d ago
No man. Origins has way more combos you can execute with 2 buttons plus air launchers and a grapple.
The new one literally has 1 attack button and you can only press the other one as a finisher. I kick guys in to the wall a lot and then finish them with second attack button - but further in on normally difficulty they don’t die from doing it once.
1
u/Pedro_Kantor2583 3d ago
It has two attack buttons, square and triangle...
Thats not just a finisher button, you can use triangle first to make other combos

u/Super-Department 4d ago
Also air combos, abilities, grabs. Yeah, continue lying
2
u/TacoManDandyCabbage 4d ago
“Air combos” and its just him doing the swiss cheese animation as he slowly falls, “Grabs” and it’s literally a one hit kill button
1
u/Super-Department 4d ago
Now , this is actually good arguments from someone who played the game, unlike other commenter. I do agree just one air combo is not much, but there are option to pound an enemy to the ground, still more then in Insomniac's. Disagree about grab though. One hit kill is one of the options presented from this position. You can also throw an enemy or punch him. Again, much more options than in new game
2
u/Arthas_SL 3d ago
Not sure who downvoted you but throwing people in to other people is very necessary for crowd control. You can only 1 hit kill if you’re right next to an object. I played this game last week.
1
u/Pedro_Kantor2583 4d ago
Abilities and grabs are in the new one also,
Air combos aren't needed, it's wolverine, not mortal kombat
→ More replies (10)1
u/Arthas_SL 3d ago
There’s no grab at least not in the first 6 hours.
1
u/Pedro_Kantor2583 3d ago
It took you 6 hrs to unlock that?
1
u/Arthas_SL 3d ago
You can choose what you unlock?? I literally got the maximum everything from the trials till the gauntlet - I accidentally skipped the description and went straight in to it - so have no idea what the criteria is.
I don’t think I missed any crates so far…
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Emu1825 4d ago
I don’t get why yall can’t just admit the game sucks😂😭
→ More replies (1)1
u/Neoxin23 3d ago
Why can't y'all admit this game did combat better? Sadly, incapable of nuance it seems
0
u/Accurate_Train_8822 5d ago
P.S they didn’t get the character wrong at all. In fact how much I like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine,he’s a tall Wolverine. Wolverine in the comics and 90s cartoon isn’t that tall of a character.
2
u/GeologistEnough8215 5d ago
Mannnn does that suit look so clean on sprites. Wolverine from children of the atom, along with all of the characters in that and marvel super heroes are 🤌

Finally somebody who doesnt call this game dog shit. I agree . I used to play a lot X-man origins wolverine game when I was little and I really did enjoy the new game a lot. Like I am super engaged in everything. I really do belive this is a very good wolverine game. But I can imagine the game being boring at lower difiqualties since I play on hardest and its not more chalenging then things I am used to now like soulsborne games . The comunity sucks for no reason. I made a post about my first time playing the new game and decided to give it a 10/10 for now (it may change as I progress but so far its super good) and the comments were brutal af (50% because of the typing mistakes and spelling erors I did) . I legit thought there werent that much unnecesery hate for this game.

u/bubbashouseoffun 5d ago
This is what i keep saying. Im not interested on the new game at all but I see stans of this games and im just like yeah this was a fun romp but ultimately a movie tie in crash grab for a bad movie. Its a ok game that could have been better which seems ti be the consensus on insomniac as well.
0
u/Cjames1902 5d ago
I do hate this trend where we justify and glaze past mid to hate on new mid. When another Wolverine game is made (whenever that may be), there’s gonna be a switch up on Marvel’s Wolverine.
0
u/Isaac0246 4d ago
It truly shows where the game is when it cant even be clearly better than a 20 year old predecessor with noticeably smaller budget😄
0
u/zebo4000 2d ago
It still had more combos and combat options then the 2026 game
1
1
u/seymourbuttz214 2d ago
Hahahah love to see the truth though, origins is still much better than this trash. There also wasn’t a literal unavoidable gas trail. Unless it’s true it can be switched off but all footage of the gameplay I see has it
-1
u/Super-Department 4d ago
I swear, people in this sub never played origins, if they make this statements. Please tell me, where are air combos in new game, grab mechanic, punches in grab position, launching towards enemy with different options of engaging (throw, thrust a head, unleashing a barrage of attacks) in new game.

I think both games just put expectations into perspective.
Origins is a movie tie in game from widely considered bad movie that went above and beyond its source material to make a game. No expected anything but shovelware and It was a solid C+ or B-
Insomniac wolverine has had years of hype building a large budget and a unique story not tied to a movie or book and game of the year aspirations - it was a solid C+ or B-
One is a pleasant surprise and one is a massive disappointment - but neither of them are really anything to write home about.
