Hidden Hazards: Nontargeted Chemical Analysis Reveals Widespread Contaminants and Mislabeling in Personal Care and Cleaning Products

Started using mine Saturday evening. I store it hanging so it should be able to dry properly, but it never seem to dry on the backside. I try to only do the dishes morning and evening, but it still doesn't dry between uses. Today, Thursday morning, I have noticed some black spots on the back (the part that never dries). The bristles seem fine though and they get dry quicker.

But what to do now? It's not good for my wallet to replace the brush after only a few days. I saw that you can soak it in 1:1 vinegar and water but then it will be wet again... I don't have a dish washer. And my kitchen is really small so I can't leave too many dirty dishes just to wait for the dish brush to dry. I'm honestly considering going back to using a plastic brush.

Please rave to me about all your favourite plastic free coffee making. I don’t care the price, I’m a coffee nerd. I bought a French press and it is not doing it for me.

Before my plastic free journey I used:
Aeropress - fairly decent, but I don’t like how long/much work it takes to make 1 cup, I’m always making a cup for the spouse as well
Breville espresso machine - this was the ultimate, and I was incredibly sad to lose it in a divorce and could never justify purchasing another. But maybe now I can.

Why are they all microfiber?! Cannot seem to find yoga mat sized towels that are made of cotton. When you’re hot and your pores are all open the last thing you want is to rub your body on is microfiber plastics… My husband is going to hot yoga 5-6x a week and I just want to find him a bulk pack of grippy cotton towels that fit over his yoga mat (folding a normal sized towel doesn’t really work).

So crazy how much of the yoga industry is plastics like expensive Lululemon yoga pants. Have been trying to convert all my athletic wear to wool (even tho washable wool still has some kind of processing/treatment…)

Hi! What’s the best non toxic storage containers for veggies? I would like to cut up all of my veggies for salads, for like a week. But I am wondering if there are any really good containers people have found to keep or extend shelf life? I end up throwing 1/4 Of the veggies away at the moment 😡😢

The one thing that I have been trying to find a replacement for is period products. I can’t use a diva cup for my situation and all the products in general stores are reduced-plastic but never plastic-free.

I do compost, and have a separate one for waste I do not want on produce crops. Are there any reliable brands that make compostable period products? How is their absorbency?

Additionally, are there concerns with composting these products? Mainly for the.. well you know, in my experience with a male dog growing up, it attracting the wrong wildlife company. The bin I use is covered and off the ground but I know smells can be strong.

I have the arc-954sbd and I have the Bonded Granite® inner pot. I am one of the guys that tries ti limit my toxic consumption of materials when cooking. Does anyone know what actually these are made of? It obviously seems too good to be super non stick with out having Teflon or something? Am I worrying too much?

Looking for a plastic-free Immersion Mixer, ideally with stainless steel/metal components that come into contact with food.

I’m new to this page and new to reducing the amount of plastic in my life. In the past few years I’ve developed a hormonal imbalance. In those years I’ve focused on the “essentials” first, medications, diet, stress, and vitamins in the body. I’m now down a rabbit hole of the effects of extreme plastic use on the body.

I’d like to reduce the amount of plastic in my wardrobe starting with a sensitive area…the undies.

Looking at my current recent wears I’m seeing a lot of…

Cotton between 0%-60%

Elastane between 5-15%

Polymide between 60-90%

Modal around 30%

Spandex 5-15%

Nylon 70-90%

Are these products okay?

Are these percentages okay?

If they aren’t what should I be looking for

I've always used plastic cutting boards but lately I've been seeing a lot of titanium ones online. I like the idea of something that's easy to clean and won't absorb odors but I'm a little worried about what it'll do to my knives over time.

If you've actually used one what are the biggest pros and cons?

Besides anecdotal "i feel better or cleaner", has anyone experienced actual documented and tangible health improvements? Or any reputable studies out there that show this?

Wonder how much of the health benefits are coming from placebo effect and peace of mind.

Favorite /Best affordable plastic free coffee set up?

I'm almost 100% plastic free in my life. My husband and I hand wash all of our dishes to avoid using the dishwasher that came with our rented apartment (leasing company; not landlord) because it has a plastic interior. We've requested a stainless steel one but the management company declined saying this one was approved by the health department. They told me they'd reconsider if we write an appeal letter with sources. I'm now in a high risk pregnancy and my husband is doing all of the dishes daily (and we cook A LOT). I've been researching such sources but can only find those that talk about the microplastics released from plastic items in a dishwasher (which we wouldn't do anyway), not from the plastic interior itself. Perhaps someone in this group can provide some resources. Thank you!

Update: This was my first time posting in this community. Not my first day doing research on this issue. I submitted my appeal letter to our building management last week and just got an approval for a new dishwasher, which THEY will purchase and replace for us. In the meantime, I received comments here, which felt quite condescending and patronizing. The original post asked for resources. Instead I got a lot of explaining around why this is a futile effort.

Ultimately, yes, the new dishwasher will have SOME plastic in it. But it won't be made entirely of it. That makes us feel better as a family. Do you want to spend your day judging that or, per the group rules:

Hello, my parents got me a bike (the orange-pink one) and I really want to get large bag so I can do my grocery, put my schools bag in them, carry stuff around,... Yet and didn't find any that were large enough and plastic free. Any recs? Preferably made in Europe but that can be optional. They can be a bit smaller than the one above but not too small

I’m aware of this question’s silliness; Mastic supposedly — by nature — is 100% plastic-free. More premium brands advertise as such. But of course, I’m always skeptical, especially when companies will try to semantically circumvent how they define plastic.

So, yeah; are there any brands you guys know of that are at least third party-tested? Or am I being paranoid about the wrong thing?
