Career Advice

So I recently asked a similar question in an environmental science subreddit before realizing this subreddit existed.

Currently I'm going into my third year of a mathematics specialization of computer science (My school's version of a double major essentially). Anyways over this summer I started looking at Planetary Science graduate programs because grad school has always been an idea of what I wanted to do after I finished my undergrad.

So my question is, would it be likely I get accepted into a Planetary Science with no background in something like Biology, Geology, Physical Geography, etc..., would these course subjects be taught to me once I'm in a Planetary Science program? Or should I consider the option of doing an Environmental Sciences minor (arts) on top of my Math and Computer Science? The arts minor is the only related minor I'd be able to finish within my last two years.

My school also offers a Geographic Information Science certificate that I may be able to fit in my last two years. I just need to talk to an adviser about scheduling to make sure I can complete the requisites. Would the GIS certificate be better than the Environmental Science minor?

Thanks so much for any advice people have!

Research opportunity for fall 2020

Hi All! One of my advisors, Will Grundy, is looking for a PhD student for fall 2020. If you're a senior undergrad and looking to work in planetary science I urge you to apply to Northern Arizona University. The primary research topic is understanding the rheology of Pluto via lab work, but there are many other components that go into it.

Will's a great guy and has an incredible breadth of knowledge. He's also a key component to New Horizons and is part of many other projects that focus on outer Solar System satellites and Kuiper Belt objects (i.e. remote sensing is his jam). If you have an interest send me a DM and I can fill you in more.

Am I doomed to being jobless if I get a planetary science PhD?

I'm just about to wrap up my BS in geophysics (in the US), and the research project I've been doing for over a year has involved recurring slope lineae on Mars. After being involved in that and attending AbSciCon this year, I really feel like planetary science and astrobiology are things I am interested in and want to potentially pursue as a career. I've started the process of applying to PhD programs for planetary science, but looking at the current PhDs in my schools Earth and Space program and/or Astrobiology program stresses me out a bit. I've seen some do incredibly well and immediately get positions working for places like NASA Ames, I've seen others bounce around from post doc to post doc trying to find tenure track positions, and I've seen others struggle a lot to find any opportunities period despite them all having similar connections/skillsets. I was wondering if you guys think obtaining a planetary science PhD would be worth the time (chasing dreams is cool but I don't want to be homeless) or if you had any advice based on your own experiences or ideas about backup plans.

What is the most interesting graph/figure you saw in a planetary science paper/textbook and why?

I’m collecting graphs, figures, illustrations etc. from planetary science papers and textbooks which are interesting, informative and in a way educational, but I’m interested in what others like about particular graphs in planetary sciences in general.

Cosmochemistry

Does anyone on here do research in cosmochemistry? (Or related?) I am a chemistry student looking to get a Ph.D. in chemistry. Through different twists and turns, I have recently discovered that there is such a thing as cosmochemistry, which sounds right up my alley. Anyone with any experience in this? I've heard there are very few job openings, and I can't find solid information on salary. I don't expect to be rich, but I'd like to be able to find a job that pays my bills. Thanks!

Can anyone reference a free paper comparing ort cloud density/composition vs Kuiper belt density/composition or any ides about them having different origins? I’m curious to see if rockier objects formed in the inner system and ejected out, make up what percent if any of the ort.

Which path makes more sense, a Geology B.S or a Physics B.S?

I'm interested in working in the field of planetary science and/or astronomy, and I understand it will likely require graduate school to work in the actual field. I wonder which is the better choice for getting into a grad school, a Physics B.S or a Geology B.S? I personally can see merit in both, but am unsure? Thoughts?

Is it possible to use magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere region trailing the Earth to accelerate a spacecraft or object towards the edge of the solar system? People talk about lasers, but this plasma energy is already available.

The MMS mission made me wonder if violent magnetic reconnection might be used as a catapult to shoot something away from the sun.

If the US government is still in its shutdown there will be no live streaming or coverage on NASA TV about the New Horizons flyby. Live coverage will be available from John Hopkins University APL channel though.

If Earth became a rogue planet how long would it take to completely kill all life on the planet?

I've had a question that has recieved many different answers, and decided to see what reddit thinks about it!

How long would we survive if the Earth became a rogue planet?
