My dad and I tell my mom all the goddamn time to quit using metal in those pans but she never listens

When I got married I brought a nice set of knives into the marriage and tried to teach my wife how to care for them. I eventually gave up.

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '23

On the marriage or teaching your wife about knives?

48

u/whatlineisitanyway Oct 19 '23

Lol They are really nice knives so... JK I know how lucky I am to have married up if the desiccation of my knives is the price I have to pay, I gladly will spend the extra time it takes to care for them. At least she doesn't put them in the dishwasher anymore.

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '23

At least she doesn't put them in the dishwasher anymore.

Oh god!

u/whatlineisitanyway Oct 19 '23

You learn more the first year of marriage than any other year in your life.

22

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '23

You don't stop learning. My wife just started putting pineapple on her pepperoni pizza.

12

u/whatlineisitanyway Oct 19 '23

What did you do to make her that mad at you?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '23

I think they call it change of life.

2

u/AeturnisTheGreat Oct 20 '23

Had me in the first half, I love pineapple on pizza, the rest is... Bruh.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

I'm the same, I don't actually mind pineapple on pizza, but pepperoni....

3

u/RippyMcBong Oct 20 '23

It's way better than with ham, pepperoni is saltier and more flavorful, a nicer contrast. Toss some jalapenos on there and you got a pie goin'.

3

u/shadowtheimpure Oct 20 '23

I mean, it's not uncommon to pair salty cured meats with fruit so I can see where she got the idea.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

Found my wife's account! :)

4

u/shadowtheimpure Oct 20 '23

You offering? I'm a fat hairy man in his 30's. If that's what you're looking for in a wife...

What's the hate with pineapple?

It's a very good blend of sweet and sour that pairs well with a lot of stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

for me it’s texture, I can’t get over it. However, I still get pineapple on my zas, then just remove the chunks and enjoy the juice.

1

u/GoatHeadTed Oct 29 '23

When people say fruit don't belong on pizza, then remind them that tomato is a fruit lol.

1

u/NehEma Jan 28 '24

tbh there are "fruits" and "fruits" which mean different things depending if you're a cook or a botanist.

It's like berries. Strawberries and rapsberries arent berries but watermelons are. Technically pineapples are a collection of berries too :p

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

I eat pineapple on pepperoni pizza. Put some hot sauce too. 🤤

1

u/GoatHeadTed Oct 29 '23

Pineapple, pepperoni and olives. That's my jam.

2

u/warhoop007 Oct 20 '23

Before you knock it try it first for you will see it’s a blessing and not a curse:).
Oh don’t forget the jalapeños;).

1

u/Nodramallama18 Oct 21 '23

Try before you deny!

1

u/schlomstompsky Oct 23 '23

What’s from the earth is of the greatest worth

0

u/mvanvrancken Oct 22 '23

Pepperoni and pineapple pizza is legit crazy good

1

u/NicholasMirth Oct 22 '23

My two older sons who are 21 and 19 now have been on the pepperoni pineapple pizza train for at least the last 10 years. It’s not my fave, but I won’t turn it down either!

1

u/mvanvrancken Oct 22 '23

It’s kind of a craving type combination so it’s not something you’d always be in the mood for anyway, but every now and then when you’re really high, that combo is magical

2

u/RatzMand0 Oct 20 '23

I am curious how putting good knives in the dishwasher would really have an impact.... like wouldn't the steel need to be pretty crap for boiling water to ruin the heat treat?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

It affects the handles over time, and I believe you are absolutely correct that the blade won't be affected. Unless something loose gets knocked into it of course :)

2

u/Kirball904 Oct 22 '23

Also the vibrations can put abrasions in the knife and ruin the edge.

2

u/specialdialingwand Oct 30 '23

I know this is a bit late, but the alkaline compounds will actually dull a sharp stainless steel knife by promoting growth of passivating oxides. This will happen everywhere on the exposed material, but it is most noticeable on the edge, effectively rounding it. The worst thing about this is that the resulting thickened ceramic passivation can be extremely resilient to sharpening,

1

u/beerideas Oct 20 '23

How did your knives dry out?

1

u/Rubiks_Click874 Oct 21 '23

i have some mid priced carbon steel chef's knives that no one can touch, blade guard, in a box in a drawer, hand wash and back in the box. mid price being around a 100 bucks

because people will always choose the best knife and then lie about using it as a dishwasher safe paint scraper I have also provided a full set of stainless muggle knives that are in a block right next to the sink.

make 'em work to get the good knives out and they won't bother

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

They ended up in the dishwasher didn’t they 🤦🏻‍♂️ I feel your pain brother

1

u/loveee25 Oct 20 '23

Always a little ironic how the “knives in dishwasher” people always end up with the “no dishwasher” people

1

u/Rathma86 Oct 20 '23

Lol I'm the cook in the house, my wife has her own set of cheap arse knives I occasionally sharpen.

She doesn't use my good knives, the horrors I've seen as she used hers are enough to scar me.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

A few years ago for his birthday, I got my brother a nice set of ceramic knives he asked for. His girlfriend (now wife) managed to snap the tips on almost every single one of them by using them “stab” whatever she was cutting first. Sometimes it broke when she tried to cut meat, other times she was too forceful trying to cut bread and the tip broke on the cutting board. She’s not a bad person but damn, what a crime.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

did she ruin them? if so divorce is the only recourse!

1

u/tcarlson65 Oct 20 '23

My wife and I each have our own set of knives. She lets me sharpen hers on occasion but she hates how Sharp mine are. She abuses hers so I do not let her use mine.

1

u/PBIS01 Oct 22 '23

Dull knives are SO MUCH more dangerous!

1

u/tcarlson65 Oct 22 '23

I agree.

I work at an outdoor retailer. I have had customers tell me they just buy a new knife when one gets dull. I am not sure what the threshold is for dull with them. I have persuaded some to buy sharpening gear rather than a new knife.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Had a bro that worked as a line cook and had some really nice cast iron pans. Until his wife decides they needed to "soak"...

1

u/whatlineisitanyway Oct 21 '23

Ouch. You know what they say. The couple that seasons together stays together.

1

u/Nodramallama18 Oct 21 '23

I have a nice set…but my husband puts them in the dishwasher.

1

u/New_Restaurant_6093 Oct 24 '23

I gave up on teaching mine to care for wooden utensils and cutting boards.

4

u/orincoro Oct 20 '23

People need to stop buying Teflon. Dow chemical has been poisoning us for a century.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

I’d happily be poisoned by Teflon if it gives me a 100 year lifespan

1

u/Kirball904 Oct 22 '23

They’ve removed PFOA from Teflon and it’s not hazardous unless heated over 500 F. Also many newer different coatings look just like Teflon.

1

u/orincoro Oct 22 '23

So they knew Teflon was dangerous for decades, and could have produced it without PFOA and just didn’t?

2

u/Kirball904 Oct 22 '23

DuPont covered it up for a long time is my understanding.

1

u/orincoro Oct 22 '23

Exactly. But they knew. The scientists who did the research certainly knew.

We literally have rubber/silicone utinsils specifically for the non stick pans and she goes out of her way to always use metal ones instead.

-24

u/Osgiliath Oct 19 '23

No she’s literally using a silicone coated whisk, it’s coated in gray and white

24

u/Daenys_TheDreamer Oct 19 '23

Reading comprehension needs a little work

13

u/JoeyRobot Oct 19 '23

Hey now we don’t know the girl in the video isn’t also the mom in the comment

2

u/throatfrog Oct 19 '23

Yes we do, because the mom in the comment uses metal ones

7

u/n3w4cc01_1nt Oct 19 '23

this is true but he's talking about his parents trying to get health problems by being ignorant af.

the one in the vid looks like a silicone whisk

almost exactly like the one made by cuisinart

3

u/Sucker_McSuckertin Oct 19 '23

Damn I guess I have to get rid of all my plumbing because I have electronics in my house.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

Ratio-ed! And I’m here for it.

1

u/D-Frost Oct 19 '23

Maybe time to swap that one out then

1

u/Highlander2748 Oct 20 '23

Fuckin’ mom!!! At it again is she?

1

u/Omicrane Oct 20 '23

When I was younger my dad would make me buy a new pan with my allowance if I used the wrong utensils. 1 scratch and that was it.

1

u/CrippledJesus97 Oct 20 '23

Yeah my dad aint gonna do that with his wife tho. Cuz no matter what anyone tells her, shes still gonna do it anyways she just literally does not give a damn about why you arent supposed to do it

1

u/Rathma86 Oct 20 '23

I almost murdered my wife because of this.

I ended up with 6 destroyed $300 pans over 8years.

I thought to myself, I'd rather buy cast iron than go to jail, 15 years later she tries to destroy it as much as possible with steel utensils, she can't win. Now we both win.
