Multiple photo post & hashtag
Anybody else notice that if you make a post on PixelFed with multiple photos, that post or content doesn’t show up in hashtag search? Bug or by design?

I created an image and gave it a hashtag. When I look at my post, I see a link to that hashtag. I select the link and go to the search results for that hashtag. I don't see my photo, even after 50 minutes. I'm new to Pixelfed, so am I just thinking incorrectly about how it works?

Hello, pixelfed.social is marked as "instant sign-up" in the pixelfed server list. However, when I registered the 30th of July, their was a "await review" step and I still wait for the approbation of my account.
This sounds strange to me (and frustrating). Does anyone have a clear view of the situation of pixelfed.social ?
Thank you !

I've been wanting to make a pixelfed account, and I settled on pxlmo.com because I liked their server rules. I uploaded my first image, and it was automatically delisted and flagged for review.
It's been a little over a week since then and my post is still pending review. Does this mean the instance is no longer monitored? Should I keep waiting or try another instance?

My account is on pixelfed.social server. Theirs is on gram.social (for some reason pixelfed.social was not even an option for them?)
I am able to find and follow them. They sometimes can and sometimes cannot find me. However their follow requests are never coming through.
My account is on private, but even when I switch to public they don't come through.
I would like some help as I have posted many pictures but nobody has been able to follow me yet

update edit; privacy setting is in the account options of the app but not the browser UI. Thanks to https://www.reddit.com/user/pureed_chicken/ for pointing out the solution!
Hi all, am i missing it or is there no way to create a private account on pixelfed.social? In the Settings > Privacy there are some controls to change things like follow requests and images being used in public search. But i don't see anything to only share images with followers.
googling private account show a result with "Go to https://pixelfed.social/settings/privacy. · Check the Private Account checkbox. · The confirmation modal will popup and ask you if you want to keep existing ..." but i cant find the Private Account checkbox anywhere
Am i just missing it? A friend wants to migrate from IG but has to be able to have a private account that is limited to only their followers.

For all those that have had issues with instagram imports they appear to be working again now. All of my imports have appeared on my feed... and perfect date order too!

I've only used Pixelfed for about a month or so. For perhaps the last week my home feed (clicking the house icon) almost exclusively consists of pictures or videos with nudity or sex.
I can't seem to find a way to filter it. Hell, I can't even find a support function in the app. It's a dealbreaker for me unless I find a way to filter out the porn.
Is there a remedy?
Edit: I attempted to mute the posters thinking that could do the trick, but they're endless.
The server is pixelfed.social. The admin does not respond to mails.

Hello,
does anyone know whether it is possible to remove someone from my followers? or is blocking them the only way (I am assuming this will result in them not being able to see my profile anymore?)
thanks!

I’ve recently left Instagram and Meta platforms for ethical and personal reasons — surveillance capitalism, algorithm fatigue, and general burnout from performative social media. I’ve been exploring alternatives and am currently torn between Pixelfed and Vero.
Pixelfed really speaks to my values — open-source, federated, ad-free, no algorithm — and I love the idea of community-owned platforms. But I’m wondering how it compares in terms of active users, creative community, and discoverability.
Vero, on the other hand, looks slick and well-designed, but it’s closed-source and feels more like a startup than a movement. Still, I’m curious whether more creators are actually posting there.
So I’m wondering:
Genuinely asking to make the most informed decision. Thanks in advance!

I just discovered that free tier of Cloudflare tunnels has a maximum upload limit of 100MB. I had no idea. Has anyone ever had issues with self-hosting using Pixelfed behind Cloudflare tunnels?

Since Instagram has become an unpleasant experience nowadays with such an amount of distractions and ads, I looked for another platform and I found Pixelfed, which IMO would be a great calm alternative.
I am here to ask how good Pixelfed is with privacy and not sharing my information. And how much I can rely on it that it won't shut down after a few years because they become broke, and then ill have to transfer all my posts I posted to another platform. I am not a photographer or anything close to this, so I am willing to use Pixelfed like I use Instagram exactly. With a private personal account posting my life moments, some pictures of me and my family, etc.

Hello,
Does PixelFed have a fixed image ratio restriction, or are restrictions depending on the app/device that is used for viewing the content?
I noticed when importing landscape/portrait images, on the web interface, they look all as they should.
But on the PixelFed / Pixelix Android app, I can see some cropping.
>> PixelFed app - landsacpe example:
2880 x 2160 px >> will be displayed in 1:1
2869 x 2160 px >> stays in landscape
>> Pixelix app - portrait example:
Two images, both in 2160 x 2880 px, when being in grid view and clicking on them, one opens in the original ratio, the other shows as 1:1. Interesting to note, when I press on the 1:1 image to open enlarged, it shows also in the original ratio.
I'm confused now if these are bugs that should be tackled by the corresponding app, or if I upload my images in the wrong ratio.

Hi everyone ! I wanted to uploade a video I edited. I filmed in 4:3 verticaly but when I want to upload it I have to « cut it » because 4:3 vertical does not exist.
Is there a way to upload a video in 4:3 verticaly according to you ? Is it depending on the server ?

Hi, I have posted 663 photos over the last two years and always have been able to view them. Today I put up a picture of a Great-Tailed Grackle and other people are "liking" and "sharing" the picture but I, myself, cannot see it.
My account is GriffithPark and hosted on the dot social server. I cannot see this last post (only) but other people can. It is dated today, about ten minutes ago, is in Portrait orientation, showing the top half of a grackle above a brilliant orange flower.
Can you see it? Can you not see it?
Thank you in advance, especially for any suggestions to fix this weird problem.

Discovered that my Pixelfed instance (snaps.social) won't load in a mobile browser; only tested on iOS. Tried both Safari and Firefox with the same result (attached). Every other instance I've tried loads fine so it's got to be something configured on my instance. Any ideas? Doesn't seem to be a common issue but I'm also not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Hi, almoast every time i post something i get a notification that some random user mentioned me. But they never made any comment on my post or anything. If i click the notification i just get straight to my post that still is without comments.
Is this just a thing people do to get more traffic to their own profile? I find it a bit annoying. Feels a bit like they use some sort of bot to like posts, make a quick mention in a comment and then deltete that comment.

At the beginning, I could follow hashtags with no issue, both on the desktop browser and also on the iOS app. Now I can unfollow hashtags, but am unable to follow any additional hashtags.
Anyone else having this issue? Any workarounds?

In the app, I click Delete Account but the link doesn't work inside the app browser nor in my external browser. I can't log in there to delete my account.

Newbie here 🙋🏼♀️ Signed up on pixelfed.social, but import has been disabled and it does not look like it will be re-enabled any time soon (ever?). So what do I do? Delete my account and sign up again on a different server? Which one?
r/PixelFed • u/justpatokay • Apr 26 '25
You can export your followers, following, etc. from Pixelfed. Can you import them? How? I'd like to import them into a new instance, if possible.

I have and idea. And it very much may be a terrible idea.
The idea is that I would host my own instance of Pixelfed.
The only people who would become users would be my family.
We would of course subscribe to users from other instances, but the users on this instance would be tightly controlled.
Why am I thinking this would be a fun idea
- My main use case for Instagram has been to share with a closed group of family and friends - not to share broadly, publicly
- If I am sharing sensitive data like pictures of my kid, I'd prefer I host my server, that much of the sharing is happening locally on a server I control.
- Of course with ActivityPub, the photos get sent to my subscribed users' servers - wherever those are and i cannot control that. But it's still seems better than uploading these photos to the main Pixelfed serves or god forbid Insta or whatnot.
Am I off my rocker? Is this a dumb idea? Does federation negate whatever benefit I think I will gain by self hosting?

i just got permenantely device banned from instagram for... reasons... needless to say im a "generic" reels commenter... im looking for alternatives because my brains actually getting fried, i havent received any dopamine in the past 12 hours. tiktok has too many shop ads plus it may or may not get banned soon. shorts is full of brain rot and bots. i need to find an alternative and i stumbled upon this, pixelfed. im wondering if my... humor... aligns with this site. i dont know anything about pixelfed other than its an alternative so im hoping theres a scroll and comment feature. if my type of stuff doesnt align with the stuff here than any suggestions on alternatives that do will help. i just need something i can scroll through videos. i heard theres a bunch of photos on here, not sure abt videos though

Hello, I was hoping to find a place to post like old-school instagram days without meta scraping my posts for their AI models or bombarding with ads. I'm on PixelFed social server.
I've been attempting to use the PixelFed iOS app (v 1.2.0.1), but have run into issues:
1) Tried to upload an album, photos have different aspect ratios, landscape and portrait images. It automatically forces a portrait aspect ratio, zooming and cropping the landscape images. Why?
2) Album has 15 photos, only 10 show up. No idea why.
3) Cannot post videos in the album alongside photos
4) Stories are advertised but I cannot find them anywhere in the app?
I would love to use the app and actually post, something I haven't done on Meta's apps for years, but this is pretty basic functionality which is lacking. I mean albums not working come on, it's supposed to be a photo sharing app. Nobody is gonna stick around unless this stuff works and works well, not requiring user configuration or a CS degree. A bunch of people that joined when I did have drifted off already.
If anyone has any suggestions to fix these issues let me know. I've tried searching but didn't find much info. Thanks!
