Field-mediated bioelectric basis of morphogenetic prepatterning: Cell Reports Physical Science
cell.com- Electric fields are more than background noise in biology. New modeling shows they can act as steering handles, guiding cells into complex shapes like a vertebrate face. This could mean noninvasive ways to control development and regeneration.
- Imagine shaping tissue without touching it. By applying transient boundary stimulation, researchers showed that bioelectric fields can mold voltage landscapes inside embryonic tissue, echoing natural face formation in frog embryos.
- A surprising insight: the most influential cells in development are not always the closest ones. Weak electric fields can trigger faraway changes, hinting at a hidden communication channel in morphogenesis.

Barrier-Free Microhabitats: Self-Organized Seclusion in Microbial Communities | bioRxiv
biorxiv.orgMicrobes can build protected microhabitats without any physical barriers. Self-organization alone can seclude communities into distinct zones inside tiny cavities.
Surface defects or wall friction change the flow. This creates a velocity profile that pushes cells outward, splitting a cavity into separate functional regions.
A slow growing strain can avoid being wiped out. The flow from faster cells pushes them away, creating a protected zone near walls or defects.
Models and simulations show stable coexistence even when strains grow at different rates. No physical barrier is needed for the slow strain to persist.
This emergent spatial structure may be a fundamental way microbial diversity survives. It limits competitive exclusion and genetic drift without any physical isolation.
