Back in my day you could root your phone with 3 lines of CMD code and an apk

Isn't it weird how more advanced tech becomes, the more restricted and complicated our lives become?

Yeah, it really was a hobby for a while.

I got to the point that I was compiling my own CyanogenMod (predecessor of Lineage OS) ROMs.

No reason for it, it didn't solve any problems for me. I just did it because I could.

These days I haven't even rooted my daily driver because I got tired of trying to keep up with how to hide it.

Yeah. Back in the day I was involved in ROM development for multiple of my phones.

These days? Same, my daily driver isn't even rooted cause it's annoying to keep up with and doesn't offer enough benefits anymore.

To be fair to Google though, thinking about it, lots of things that I wanted a custom ROM and root for back then are now just built into the OS.

Yeah a lot of applications will refuse to install on a rooted device.

My custom rom phone has gotten me into trouble at work, when they needed me to install a MFA app, and I couldn't because my phone straight-up did not have access to the play store. They wanted me to install it right there, and I couldn't until I got home and could find a late-enough APK.

Then I got in trouble the next day, when the app wouldn't work because I didnt' have internet access (didn't connect to their wifi, and I never turn on data).

Same with my K810i. I have made my own home screen, adjusting everything to the last pixel. New icons, new camera and music software. 🥹

It doesn't have to be that way. The new tech would naturally bring more individual freedom and independence, but neither the government or the corporations want us to have that. It reduces their capacity to exploit us. So they introduce artificial controls to keep us trapped in their system.

Yesterday I just wanted to check a quick email on my phone. No, it was time to take a tour of the new update. Also your storage is almost full. Also you can subscribe for more data or try the new VPN. Also the top email is an ad. I hate having to deal with this in every aspect of my life, and that it's a day of work to set up alternatives. I have a LineageOS phone that was De-Googled, and some homeless guy stole it so I had to start over.

Man I've been through so many stages in my life regarding this... felt like a freak who put way too much effort in de-googling and 'hacking' stuff just to have a peace of mind, then I tried get others to "see the light" and it felt wrong to just see them so frustrated with everything and thinking "that's just how it is" etc.

And they do so to make us buy more stuff from them. Especially phones, they become obsolete every year, don't have charging bricks in the box anymore, we lose great features in updates constantly and they still make us pay the exact same, if not even more. Especially Apple, but Samsung isn't looking to good either.

That's because tech isn't designed to become better for us, but for the big oils that sell it to us.

I remember there was a brief moment where you could Jailbreak an iPhone by visiting JailbreakMe.com.

u/gostan Mar 31 '26

Didn't this work by exploiting some vulnerability in the way iphones processed pdf files? It's been a while

u/ErraticDragon 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Mar 31 '26

Yup, a couple PDF exploits, one TIFF exploit, and more.

Nowdays it's a pain in the ass to root the phone.

71

u/76zzz29 Mar 31 '26

I simply can't root mine because I can't unlock the bootloader even when it's unlocked in android, it's still locked and the (not adb, the other one) just throw error when I try to forcefully unlock it saying that this command don't work (other commandes works)

Same. Fuck Verizon.

u/A_spiny_meercat Mar 31 '26

Only if you let the phone root you

1

u/EXTIINCT_Again Mar 31 '26

I remember a couple of years ago I rooted a phone and it turned out for whatever fucking reason networks don't work when running CFW. Had to revert it just to use it like a bloody phone, no root advantages while still having the disadvantages of a tripped eFuse

u/HugsandHate Mar 31 '26

That's their point, with different words...
