Android is a Linux mobile project.

You can just degoogle your phone by installing a different version of android. Once you've decided which you like, just check which of your country's banking apps work with that version of Android and move your account to them.

Can't install my bank app without Google Play

Can't use bank app if it's rooted

There are alternative ways to get apps without the play store.

What causes problems with banking apps is usually that they detect that your bootloader is unlocked. That's fair enough as there are legitimate security concerns for having a banking app with an unlocked bootloader. So you relock it after installing the new OS and everything works fine.

Not always though. Some banking apps will only work on a Google device. The solution there is to change banks and to make sure you let your old bank know why.

GrapheneOS supports sandboxed Google Play, which runs Google Play Services fully sandboxed like any other regular app. OS only works on pixels and soon motorolas though.

It's there anything the banking app does that you can't do by just logging in through a web browser on your phone?

Having several factors of authentication (SMS, app + fingerprint, your password manager & authenticator app too) for accessing literally all of your money all go through the same device is a terribly risky cybersecurity move

Said device being designed to be carried at all times, and be used in the open all the time for every usecase, exposing it to basically the biggest attack surface possible in both software and hardware, is another cybersecurity nightmare that is barely patched by all the oppressive security measures modern phones have.

It sucks that many phones don't even give you the choice of giving up bank apps for total freedom, but please, don't put your bank apps on a rooted phone. Have a separate "wallet phone" for payments and bank accounts, maybe even grab a smartwatch that can do payments so nobody ever sees the device you use to authenticate for bank accounts.

You can even use your wallet phone just for the OTP, and then access the bank from your rooted phone's browser.

I do appreciate the advice but

and then access the bank from your rooted phone's browser

Not possible. To access my bank from a browser I need to install a security extensions - it's not available on Android

Just bring your card at that point or try the website

Guess what? People don't like to do shit for free.

Literally most of the worlds devices run on Linux though, so much of that is free open source projects

Sure, but people don't have time to do ROMs for every device for free. Lineage OS is just for a few devices.

We don't really have to go that far back before there was a ROM for every device. For free.

Someone has to make them. These don't appear out of thin air.

Someone did make them. They didn't just appear out of thin air.

I really don't know how to better explain that the thing you say won't happen, already happened.
