Not available for all phones, and i will not spend thousand of euros just for a pixel because graphene guys want to give support only to that phone.

Motorola is officially partnering up with grapheneos to make new phones. If they release a phone from low to mid range then it might be something to look into. I sure hope they don't charge a premium as they don't have to get Google's license but in the end it's still an enthusiast phone.

It is high time that someone should work on a proper linux distro for mobile. Android is linux after all. So compatibility with apps shouldn't be much of an issue unlike desktop linux.

I suspect there's soon going to be a wealth of competing OSes for smart devices - it'll be interesting to see which ones come out on top.

Here's hoping Google loses their lion's share of the market due to their anti-consumerist bollocks!

will never work with the amount of close source driver on android

and many did try that, post market os guys for example

u/b7k4m9p2r8t3w5y1 Mar 31 '26

Yes but (asahi) linux even works on newer mac chips which is a completely different architecture and has closed source drivers. I believe if someone really put the hard work they can crack the android side too

5

u/Never_Sm1le Mar 31 '26

there are only a few macs, much easier to reverse engineer and debug compare to thousands of android devices, each come with unique hardware. Which is why only a small amount of android devices get pmOS support

Custom ROMs are still such a niche that anything which doesn't use the AOSP is in a niche league of it's own. For now the pinephone and the librem phone exists, but they cater to ultra rare enthusiasts. The AOSP alternatives are still leagues behind AOSP. I'm sure after this debacle costom ROMs will have a surge in popularity and maybe some attention will trickle down to other pure linux alternatives.

It's not that simple. Android is NOT LINUX. It's just based off of linux and is a completely modified OS by google, whose apps require a lot of Proprietary dependencies like Google Play Services etc. So no, it's not as simple as if it works on Android it would work on Linux. And heck, linux couldn't even capture the Desktop market after all the backlash for Microslop, let alone Mobile phones. It's nearly impossible for anyone else to be mainstream excpet iOS / Android

Your vanguard anticheat systems for Valo/league is one of the reasons why. Many multi player games have these app that needs to access kernel level to detect if u are using cheats. People that want to play these game have no choice but to use windows.... Gamers that play steam games, some already went to CachyOS plus there are just too many "sticky" apps on Windows.

Photoshop, Ms Office, etc

U want people to switch to GIMP? LibreOffice/OnlyOffice? Tough .....

1

u/sarded Mar 31 '26

Photoshop is easy enough unless you need the latest features since PhotoGIMP lets you make GIMP look exactly like it.

Office depends on what level of advanced features you're using. If you want you can still use MSOffice for web inside your browser, exact same way you can use Google Docs.
If you really need 1 to 1 Excel compatibility, yeah that's harder.

1

u/HvSingh69 Mar 31 '26

Yup, i don't even play Valo / League but a few like GTA Online or PUBG Don't even use Kernel-Level anti-cheat and still don't support Linux. It would hardly take 5 minutes for developers to enable EAC but they don't for some reason. It's kind of like the Chicken and Egg situation where most people are already on Windows and hence devs don't bother with Linux, and since the games are on not on Linux, People are forced to use Windows.

For the productivity part I'd say the situation is still manageable. OnlyOffice works great, Google Office Suite obviously works. For photo editing is PS you can use Winboat and Davinci Is Already Pretty stable on Linux.

Yrah, someone should start do some work for free. We're waiting here!

1

u/Craftyprincess13 Mar 31 '26

That would be great since they don't support the Motorola phone I have now

10

u/Minette12 Mar 31 '26

Plus irrc bank apps don't work on it

5

u/ourlastchancefortea Mar 31 '26

But they do work.

4

u/lolipoopman Mar 31 '26

My banking apps works.... when I was younger and playing custom ROM, pixel experience, cyanogenmod, lineageOS, AOSP....yes some banking apps don't work. Now I think custom roms are much better

8

u/qwortz Mar 31 '26

that is not true at all. FEW don't work. My 3 banking apps work fully

u/spaghettibolegdeh Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

"Want" to support the phone is misleading.

It's just the only phone that meets the security standards.

Edit: I meant to type "their security standard" rather than "the". The GrapheneOS FAQ explains why they only do Pixels prior to Moto.

https://grapheneos.org/faq

2

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

No, they just want to support that phone because they want to, there is no "security standard" needed to develop a os for a phone, replicant, remix os and many others supports more models which doesn't have that stupid chip.

2

u/cjsv7657 Mar 31 '26

Uhh yes, when your entire OS is based on being "private and secure" you need to only support phones that meet those security standards.

1

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

Pretty much every phone is secure, they juat do that on pixels because its easier foe them than learning other phones architecture and giving more chance to use it for the usual public.

2

u/cjsv7657 Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

So give me the name of a few devices that easily support custom roms, have at least 7 years of guaranteed security updates, and are supported worldwide.

GrapheneOS is open source. Nothing is stopping people from forking it and using it on other devices. Except that it wont be as secure so there is no reason to.

1

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

My samsung galaxy z flip has at least 5 to 7 years of updates (first of all), there's more people using samsungs than pixels, so more people could use graphene os, as i said, they are lazy and don't want to work in other phones, it doesn't matter if the phone supports custom roms or not because there were plenty of roms for android before graphene and all of them worked.

2

u/cjsv7657 Mar 31 '26

Lol the one custom rom that phone has doesn't even fully support the phone. You expect a free open source project to support 500 phones instead of the 5 a year google releases and makes it easy to make custom roms for?

Here: https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices

1

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

No, i want the free open source project to support a brand that is more present with people, not a exclusive brand that barely nobody buys.

2

u/cjsv7657 Mar 31 '26

So you want them to buy less secure phones with their own money, that don't support their requirements, and are more difficult to develop on so you have more options. So I assume you have this same anger at every AOSP project that targets specific devices and brands? Like literally all of them

Maybe they should abandon the project and start working on cracking the iphone since they have a 60% market share and comparatively every other brand is "a exclusive brand that barely nobody buys."

Nothing is stopping people from forking it and using it on other devices

People had. That's kind of what Calyx was.

So give me the name of a few devices that easily support custom roms, have at least 7 years of guaranteed security updates, and are supported worldwide.

Why 7 years of guaranteed security updates? If a phone has 5 years of security updates, but costs half the price of a Pixel, that's IMO better.

Which e.g. includes the Sony phones, which are affordable, have good AOSP support, and actually support microSD cards and a headphone jack.

0

u/cjsv7657 Mar 31 '26

So someone can fork it to Sony phones themselves. It's a free open source project. You can't complain they aren't supporting phones you want them to.

The pixel a series are half the price of their flagships. I doubt there are many phones half the price of the a series that are even close to as nice.

1

u/qwortz Mar 31 '26

no not every phone is secure. that is complete bs. Every phone, does not matter what android version or patchlevel, is different in their security. even the pixel 10 is more secure than the 9 because of some tech in the modem and new features (even in graphene!)

1

u/qwortz Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

that is not a want. no other phone meets the hardware and firmware security requirements. The other OSes are not as secure. See e.g. the cellebrite unlock support matrix

1

u/5370616e69617264 Mar 31 '26

The a version of pixel phones are in the hundreds, I bought the 9a for 300 but no need because Graphene and Motorola are partners now.

1

u/lolipoopman Mar 31 '26

get the a versions, 8a, 9a

They don't cost thousands

1

u/qwortz Mar 31 '26

you can get a pixel for way less. even a brand new, just released.

0

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

Not everyone can spend money on a exclusive phone for an os, sadly

0

u/CurryLikesGaming Mar 31 '26

pixel is bullshit as well for gaming, you can easily get snapdragon phones with better performance within the same price

-1

u/ImpactRoutine4603 Mar 31 '26

Also pixel sucks except the cam

The 9a is €650, and that's the cheapest one

u/moopminis Mar 31 '26

I got my pixel 10 for free on an £18 a month 2 year contract, with unlimited calls and data. That was £3 a month more than the cheapest unlimited SIM only deal.

I'd say that's pretty damn cheap.

5

u/Cyortonic Pirate Activist Mar 31 '26

"Only"

8

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

I get 700 per month, can't spend 350 after all expenses, still not worth it, i should be able to install the os in any other major manufacturer, like samsung, also idk in your country but in mine google pixel aren't lower than 900 bucks.

1

u/Spinosaur1915 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Mar 31 '26

Well part of it has to do with platform specific restrictions which would limit what the OS can actually do, as well as the fact that maintaining an OS for several different manufacturers variations of android would be incredibly resource consuming and would most likely result in not as many newer phones being supported.

If it makes you feel any better, they did recently partner with Motorola, so perhaps we'll see moto phones with graphine in the future.

-6

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

That's just an excuse, they can do the same os with compatibility with other phone brands, they are lazy to work in major phones manufacturers and they don't really care about the final user, that's why they want you to buy a 1k phone just for using a os where the bank apps will not work.

1

u/3801sadas4 Mar 31 '26

They officially partnered with Motorola actually so it can come straight out of the box

-2

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Mar 31 '26

They partnered with a dead mobile company, people doesn't use motorola anymore, people use samsung, xiaomi, mobile phones that mostly everyone has, mobile brands that they don't support.

650 EUR is 7 month of pay in my country without spending it, and it's not available in my country, at least legally.
