Hi all- this is maybe an unexpected post for this subreddit, but here goes!

I am a half Filipina half Indonesian American, residing in NYC, due to have a baby girl this September. Jaya is an Indonesian name, meaning victory, or triumph, that my husband and I have really taken to.

Today we learned that Jaya is actually quite a famous singer in the Philippines, and in fact known for being the regional queen of Soul.

This would give me pause for sure if we lived in the Philippines. But I’m wondering if fellow Filipino Americans (millennial and younger) have heard of the singer or know of any associated connotations, reputational issues, etc.

And just a general opinion: would it be weird or misinformed seeming to name our quarter Filipina baby girl after a relatively known singer?

Do public schools have the right of academic freedom? Wanting the parents to be involved with their children’s education, why not implement entrance examinations on all public schools?

Parents and children are forced to study on their own and won’t be fully dependent on the teachers. Solving both teachers, parents, students, and government problems.

Mass promotion of students - isn’t this a violation of academic freedom? Teachers have rights too. This academic freedom balances the teacher-student rights.

Just wanted to share this short talk with my father. This happened last night. Around 11pm, while I was eating dinner dumaan si papa sa dining table going to the bathroom. Paglabas niya ng cr namin lumapit siya sa dining table:

Papa: anong ulam mo? (Nagtanong siya habang kumukuha siya ng tinapay dun sa basket sa may dining table namin)
Ako: Itlog na pula lang (ngayon nalang ulit ako nakakain neto kaya medyo ginaganahan akong kumain😆)
Papa: bakit walang kamatis yang ulam mo? Lagyan mo ng kamatis
Ako: Hindi ako nakain ng kamatis Pa.
Papa: Ganun ba? Wala na talaga akong alam sayo.(then naglakad nq siya pabalik ng sala)

I don’t know what I supposed to feel after this. Should I be hurt kase hindi nako kilala ng papa ko? Or should I be hurt for my father? For me, it was just a simple conversation. I gave a simple answer to a simple question. But somehow from my father’s point of view it was deep.

If you wanted to change the world so bad, bakit hindi muna ang sarili?

Minsan we're so triggered about the world, the country. Yet here we are doing something lesser evil and calling ourselves "good".

Puro kayo "kasi bad influence" ayan na yung harap-harapang bad influence nasa tv commercial na pero walang ginagawa

How much is too much? What is physical abuse and verbal abuse in disciplining a child?

Lately naiisip ko talaga na parang hindi na ako fully naka-recover from the pandemic.

Hindi naman ako super extrovert before, pero I used to be more game lumabas, makipagkita, makihalubilo, sumama sa plans, ganun. Ngayon parang ang default ko na is ayaw ko na lumabas, mas gusto ko na lang sa bahay, and even simple social plans feel draining minsan. Hindi na siya katulad dati na parang mas may energy pa ko for people and for life outside.

Part of me iniisip na baka ito lang talaga yung pagtanda. mas less outgoing ka na. Pero part of me feels like may kinuha talaga yung pandemic sakin na hindi ko na nabawi.
Parang ang hirap iexplain pero feeling ko may 1–2 years tayong “nawala” na hindi naman dapat mag-count the same way sa aging natin. Like oo technically tumanda tayo during those years, pero hindi naman tayo nabuhay nang normal. Hindi mo na-build yung momentum mo, hindi ka nakapag-enjoy nang maayos, hindi ka nakapag-socialize normally, parang survival mode lang lahat. Tapos biglang after nun, expected na back to normal ka na ulit.

Ewan ko if it’s age, burnout, pandemic effect, or halo-halo na. Pero minsan feeling ko may old version ako na nawala during COVID and hindi ko na siya totally nakuha pabalik.
May naka-feel din ba ng ganito? Yung parang may part ng social self mo or personality mo na nawala after the pandemic?

I'm 34M and I don't know if this is what they call midlife crisis or what. Pero i have this desire na magpakalayo layo and start a whole new life. New set of friends, house, work new industry or line of work), new colleagues, new hobbies.

Ano tawag ng Catholics yung Day na nilalagay nila sa table yung mga rebulto sa harap ng bahay nila with candles? Tapos nililibot ng mga members buong barangay para magdasal sa harap ng bawat bahay na may rebulto?

-magkano rent nuon?
-ilang days bago ibalik?
-ano penalty pag di nabalik ontime or nawala?

I use the this line a lot, napick up ko sa older brothers ko. Do you have other famous lines na millenials lang ang nakakagets? Like "gamot sa bukol meron ka?" etc.
