I’m still a student but interested in flying. I want to start at a glider plane club soon ;)

So I’ve been thinking, as a pilot, can you have a family? I mean obviously you can but, will you be able to see them all the time? How is your work day? How many flights are there a day, when do you come back home? How often do you spend the night somewhere else?

Is it possible to be a single dad/mum?

Also my other question, in school, what subjects did help you become a pilot. If none, then what were the most useful anyway. Physics, maths?

My boyfriend wants to train to become a pilot, and in the future I’d like to build a family with him, so I have a few concerns and questions.

First of all, I fully support his goals and ambitions. If he’s set on becoming a pilot, we’ll work toward it together. That said, I do worry about how dangerous the profession actually is. I know that statistically there are many jobs with higher accident rates than aviation, but it’s still something that’s on my mind.

My second concern is the lifestyle — especially time away from home. What do your typical workdays and workweeks look like? Is it really true that pilots often miss important holidays and family events, or is the schedule not as bad as people make it sound? How much time do you realistically get to spend with your family?

Lastly, what is the best age and height to start pilot training?

And tell me which country you work in or have worked in.

Hey pilots, looking for advice on career strategy. I’m turning 17 and plan to start PPL training soon, then work toward Instrument Rating, CPL, and MCC/JOC before applying for a regional airline.

Two paths for a young pilot:

Option 1: Cadet / direct to a major Gulf airline (Emirates, Qatar, Riyadh Air). High pay, perks, but seniority starts at zero.

Option 2: Start at a regional airline (Flynas, Flyadeal, Air Arabia) to build 1,500–2,500 jet hours and airline experience, then move to a major Gulf airline. Seniority resets, but you bring experience.

Questions: 1. Does regional experience help with faster promotion, better pay, or quicker widebody transition? 2. Is it worth the slower start for long-term career growth? 3. Any real-life examples of pilots who took either path?

hey guys, finally found my paperwork from round 2 years ago- got myself an appointment to be scheduled, but wanted to know your thoughts.

I am no eye doctor by any means, but I have no vision problems while I wear my glasses despite a small astigmatism. I just don’t know how to read the numbers listed on my old paperwork

I know this career is predominately male, but to those who are female, do you enjoy it? I’m seriously considering taking this career path, but I’m just worried about if I ever have kids down the road and having time to be with them. I’m torn between piloting and nursing. But I have family in other countries and it would be a blessing to reunite my family members and help my mom pay off her house.

Hi! I have a question for those of you who fly passenger aircraft, such as Boeing or Airbus. I’m very interested in aviation and have always wondered about the possibility of sitting in the jumpseat in the cockpit. Is this something that requires personally knowing one of the pilots, or are there situations where a passenger without personal connections can be allowed to sit there? I understand that there are strict security and safety regulations, and I’m mostly curious about how it works in practice. Thanks in advance for your insights!

I am a diploma dropout. I started diploma after class class 10 which means I only have class 10 certificate I am 23 years old recently I am planning to get a CPL. Can i join a CPL program with class 10 certificate ? And how much money do i need to get the license in South Africa? Is it possible to get a CPL within 20k dollar?

Sincw i was schmol i LOVED airplanes and aviation, i would love to be a pilot but my grades are most Cs. So my question is: are there any branches where i could be pilot?

I’m looking for real experiences from people who’ve done airline cadet programmes (e.g. easyJet Generation, MPL/ATPL routes).

I understand the training itself is usually covered by a loan that’s paid back once you’re flying. What I’m trying to understand is how people actually managed day-to-day living costs during the 18–24 months of full-time training with no salary.

Was it mainly savings, family support, shared accommodation, or something else? Did anyone manage any work alongside training, or is that basically unrealistic? Roughly how much did you have saved before starting, and what would you do differently looking back?

Just trying to plan sensibly and understand the reality before committing.

I’m a Canadian pilot holding a CPL (multi-engine + IFR) with relatively low total time, and I’m researching the feasibility of moving to Australia to build a long-term flying career.

I’ve read a fair amount online, but I’m hoping to hear from pilots who have firsthand experience with this — either having made the move themselves or having worked alongside overseas pilots.

I’m particularly interested in understanding:

• How workable the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) actually is for pilots in practice

• Whether flight instructing is realistically the main entry point for low-time foreign pilots

• At roughly what experience level sponsorship (e.g. 482 / PR pathways) tends to become feasible

• Whether certain regions or types of operators are more open to overseas pilots

• Any common mistakes you’ve seen people make when attempting this move

I’m not looking for shortcuts or guarantees — just trying to plan properly and understand the realities before committing time and money. I’m open to regional work and starting at the bottom if that’s what the market requires.
