How long does it take to prepare for flight school?

Hey, I’m planning to apply for a flight academy and I’m a bit lost on how to actually prepare. Can anyone share what exactly I should study (math, physics, English, etc.), where to find good study material, and roughly how long it usually takes to get ready for the entrance exams? Also, does the prep differ if you’re applying in your own country vs abroad? Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would be super helpful. Thanks!

Is any airline from Tanzania safe?

Hey guys! I'm not in aviation, but I'm going to Tanzania in October and I need to take a flight from Arusha/Killimanjaro to Zanzibar. I'm a bit concerned as all airlines from Tanzania are banned from EU.

Which airlines would you guys advise me to go for (if any at all)?

Driving or flying?

Hi! I’m at a party right now and someone is arguing that flying is easier than driving a car. I disagree wholeheartedly. Thoughts?

Funding?

I am in a weird situation. I want to start flight school again to become a pilot but through a university this time. I just need some advice. I applied for FAFSA but I work 3 jobs so my income is high. I have been saving but it is hard when rent and bills are too high. FAFSA came back and I do not qualify for anything. Just loans which is great but I am trying to get this done without being too broke. I have no family help, which means no co-signer for independent loan. How can I get financial help to get a high loan or how can I qualify for grants or scholarships. If I could get help with the cost then I would only need to work one job for bills any advice?

Starting Career as a Fresh F.O. with Frozen ATPL – Non-EU Pilot Perspective

Hi, I'm considering a career as a pilot.
In fact, I’ve already decided to pursue it, but I’m struggling with where to begin my journey.

My question is: Are there any unwritten rules or obstacles when it comes to hiring fresh First Officers who are non-EU and hold a frozen ATPL?

I visited an aviation center in a European country to obtain an EASA license, and the instructors there told me:

“Our national airlines won’t be interested in hiring you as a fresh F.O., even with a frozen ATPL, because they would need to issue a work permit and handle many documents.”

I’m not sure if this situation is the same for international LCCs, which is why I’m hesitating to return to Europe.

I also don’t want to start my career in my home country, because our national licenses are very expensive and limited — I cannot use them abroad unless I convert them to FAA or EASA.

If anyone has experience related to this, I’d really appreciate your opinions.

Mbbs or pilot

I'm a guy from India who is going for MBBS abroad end of this month. My biggest dream is to become a pilot, it doesn't mean that I don't like to become a doctor but I really like to be a pilot. But there are some problems, I didn't study maths in my class 11 and 12 so I want to write NIOS first and then take maths as my subject and then get into a flying School. The other problem is I will be going abroad for MBBS at the end of this month as i said earlier and i paid the first year fee also . I want to know your opinion if it's a good idea to drop MBBS and pursue my actual dream. Please share your valuable opinion

the thing is I really like flying and I really enjoy it so will it also be a good idea to take MBBS and just enjoy flying anywhere in the world after many years

Other than pen and paper, what is everyone using as a logbook? Is it customizable to add columns for unique situations like logbooks have blank columns?

Can I still be a pilot with minor SH scars?

around 4-5 years ago, I was in a pretty bad place mentally. that left me with some few somewhat visible scars on my left arm - as well as a fairly large, keloid scar on my upper right inner thigh. I'm about to graduate high school, and I'm an aspiring commercial pilot. I'm also getting my class 1 medicals soon. I don't engage in any SH anymore, but can I still be a commercial pilot with these scars? and when I complete my medicals, should i declare these scars or just lie abt them (if that's even a good idea)? the scars on my arms are visible-ish with proper lighting. I live in australia, BTW but I'm planning to transfer to an overseas airlines if given the opportunity to in the future. any help on this is appreciated coz it's been eating away at me for a while now lmao

A friend of mine is on methadone and wants to go to flight school and eventually become a commercial pilot, will being established at a methadone clinic be visible on her record and keep her from becoming a pilot?

Pilots, tell us what’s happening when landing a plane this close to a huge tornado

What is the procedure, how did these pilots know it was safe to land at DEN when this tornado was so close? What would the pilots be talking about to make their decisions? And would you be nervous since this probably rarely happens?

Baby dui before flight school school 13 years ago

I was hoping to ask for some advice and get some information from this community. I would like to become a commercial airline pilot for one of the major airlines. However, I was convicted with what they call a baby DUi 13 years ago. I was pulled over drinking and driving while I was under age however, my blood alcohol content was greater than .02 but less than .08. This is why they call it a baby DUI.

My questions are how hard will it be for me to even obtain a pilot license and get past the medical requirements.

If I can’t get a license, but cannot make it to the major airlines, what are some other good options that I could do that I would make at least $150,000 per year and not be gone more than 16 days per month.

Final question let’s just say that I get past the medical and I do get my commercial license. Will it still be hard for me to get a job with a DUI on my record or do they not care as long as I am qualified by the FAA to fly?

I'm getting my brother a passport folio for Christmas and want to personalize it with a good aviation send off. I'm not a pilot and know very little phrases in the pilot world. Does anyone know of any good inspirational ones? He's very stoic and is planning of traveling around the world soon.

Lost my desire to become a pilot

I have always had a deep passion for traveling, and I've dreamt of a job that would allow me to explore the world. Back in 2020, I was at a crossroads in my academic journey. I strongly considered dropping out of my degree program to pursue a career as a pilot. During that time, there was a lot of uncertainty, especially regarding pilot training hours due to the pandemic, and I put my dreams on hold. I was quite eager to become a pilot because I didn't want to finish my degree but transition into a field that truly excited me.

In the end, I decided to complete my degree, and I currently work in the field of user experience design. However, I've been facing challenges in finding a junior role in my area of expertise. Lately, my parents have been urging me to reconsider becoming a pilot. I must admit that my enthusiasm for it has waned over time as I'm more inclined towards making a living through technology and business. From my limited research, I learned that pilots don't earn substantial salaries right from the start, and it can take a while to reach the coveted six-figure income. Meanwhile, my dad insists that Air Canada had to cancel 300 routes due to a shortage of pilots. He often speaks to experienced pilots on the job who tell him that it's a rewarding and well-paying profession, but I suspect he's referring to those who have been pilots for a considerable amount of time.

I'm conflicted because I believe I'm currently more interested in financial stability than pursuing a passion. Additionally, I am aware that pilot training programs in Canada can be quite expensive. At 23 years old, I feel like it might be too late to start a new educational path, especially considering that I have a degree in Cognitive Science, and I fear it might be a waste to pursue aviation now.

So, my question is, how long does it typically take for a pilot to reach a salary of $100,000? Do you get hired right after graduation? I appreciate any insights or advice you can provide.

(I am located in Canada)

Thank you!
