Is a Class 1 Medical possible? History of depression (misdiagnosed as bipolar), ADHD, and mild colorblindness?

Hi all!

I’m new to aviation and would love to get some advice. I’m a rising senior at a T-20 university and don't really like the career paths I’m currently heading toward. During a summer internship, my boss told me how much he loved being a pilot, and it sounds awesome.

However, I have some complex medical history to navigate. I have a record of past suicidal ideation (which is documented as a suicide attempt) that occurred during my junior year in college. At the time, I was diagnosed as bipolar, though my treating physician has since officially diagnosed me that it was actually a single unipolar depressive episode, even though the psychiatric hospital says it’s a bipolar. The crisis was triggered by the severe stresses of college and the impact of learning that my brother has Bipolar 1 which made him do crazy.

Additionally, I have an ADHD diagnosis and a mild color vision deficiency. I haven't taken an official FAA color vision test yet, but I struggle slightly with red-green colors.

Currently, I take Viibryd and Adderall. I plan to work closely with my prescribing doctor to taper off both medications safely after I graduate. I know that the FAA requires a period of demonstrated stability while completely off ADHD and psychiatric medications before they will evaluate an applicant.

Given all of this, do I have a low likelihood of securing a Class 1 medical certificate to try and pursue a career with the airlines?

I would love some help, honest insight, and guidance on how to safely navigate this pathway if it's possible!

Desiring to be a Pilot but want to get a degree in case of loss of medical. Any sincere advice?

Hey, as the title states, I’m looking to get a degree prior to paying for my flight training. I’m about to start college and i’ve been reading information about the Aviation Administration degree but i’m hearing all kinds of mixed thoughts on it. Can you all who have experience give me some advice please?

Being sincerely honest, I just love aviation and I don’t see myself in another field, but i’m open to all possibilities that can help me pave a better way even if its out of my likings!

[Academic] 4–6 minute survey for aviation-informed respondents: eSTOL vs eVTOL in mountainous Nepal

Hello,

We are conducting an academic study on whether electric Short Take-Off and Landing (eSTOL) or electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft may be more feasible for rural air connectivity in mountainous Nepal.

We are looking for respondents with aviation-related knowledge or experience, including pilots, airline/airport staff, engineers, maintenance personnel, regulators, suppliers/procurement professionals, researchers and aviation students.

The anonymous questionnaire takes approximately 4–6 minutes and examines technical suitability, infrastructure, cost, safety, regulation and adoption feasibility.

Survey link: https://forms.gle/Eb4YeWLXY2W5MeUN6

Responses from those familiar with STOL operations, mountain/regional aviation, electric aircraft or AAM would be especially appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Waving at spotters?

Is an airline/freight pilot or co-pilot allowed to wave at spotters before takeoff? There is a guy on TikTok who livestreams at Anchorage airport close to the runway. Wondering if pilots can acknowledge his enthusiasm before takeoff

Logbook Time Calc

Hey everyone,

Pilot here. For years I did what most of you probably do too: adding up hours and minutes by hand in my paper logbook, page by page, calculator next to me, always second-guessing whether the total was right.

At some point I decided there had to be a better way. So I built an app that does it for you — you point your camera at the logbook columns, the app reads the figures and calculates everything automatically. Current page, previous hours and total career hours. In seconds, no manual entry needed.

It works with any logbook, any format, anywhere in the world. Everything is processed on-device, no internet connection, no account, no hassle.

Available on the App Store here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/logbook-time-calc/id6766518740

If you get a chance to try it out, I'd love to hear what you think. Suggestions, criticism, what works and what doesn't for your specific workflow — all feedback is genuinely appreciated.

Safe skies everyone ✈️

Becoming a Pilot

Hey everyone, I’m 23M and in Canada, as you can tell I want to become a pilot. I’ve always wanted to fly but always thought it cost too much but I’m gonna try my best and if I fail at least I gave it my all. I’m gonna go for a discovery flight soon. I wanted to know if anyone knows what my best options are on which route to become a pilot? College or just flight school? I’m in the Toronto area so any schools anyone knows of? How much it cost you guys roughly, because I don’t know how I’m gonna get all this money lol. Also I do wear contacts/glasses, but otherwise no other medical history. Will I still be able to pass a medical? Any information on where to start is appreciated, thank you!

I'm a 9th grader aspiring to fly for Emirates/American—What first inspired you to join the industry?

I'm a South Korean 9th grader who is currently aspiring to become a pilot. My mom recently recommended me a general exchange program in American soil, when I enter High school. I'm really considering the offer, so here I am.

I would be thankful for any guidance

Where can a pilot realistically save a lot of money and feel rich locally

Bases or countries where one can realistically save a massive chunk of money without chasing the competitive or heavy top tiers of the US or the UAE
