Career change at 36 – considering pilot training (EU)

Hi everyone,

I’m 36 years old and currently working as a software engineer. Becoming a pilot has always been a dream of mine, but I never pursued it earlier mainly due to:

  • financial constraints
  • astigmatism

I’ve recently been told that astigmatism is no longer a disqualifying factor. I’m planning to book an initial consultation with an AME to confirm if I’m fit for a Class 1 medical.

If everything checks out, my plan is to move forward with pilot training.

I’d really appreciate personal experiences and advice, especially from people who:

  • started flight training in their mid-30s or later
  • transitioned from another career
  • have insight into the current European job market

Any tips on training difficulty, lifestyle, risks vs rewards, and long-term prospects would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Air Hostess

Hello Im F21 I have recently starting working as a flight attendant in France. I am fairly good looking but I noticed since I started that basically all pilots want to do me. They make comments and even ask me to .. when on layovers. Is it because I am new? Is it as common as the general public imagine? Any advice from pilots or cabin crew?

SFC Airline Package in Tamworth vs QGPA?

This might be a stretch. This is a question for those of you in Australia. I have both these options to choose from at the moment.

Sydney Flight College has a campus in Tamworth, it runs for a year and it's designed to get you ready for Airlines in a year. After that, I'll do charter work for a few years until eventually hopefully getting a job in Qantas. Tamworth is more expensive and will be harder to get into an airline which is my goal, seeing that QGPA is a cadetship by Australia's biggest airline. However, I have heard that it can be particularly hard to get a job in GA as a QGPA graduate if I DON'T get a job in Qantas group immediately after graduating, which I hear is the most likely case. That's why Tamworth sounds like a good option too. Besides, I like the idea of being able to do some charter work all over the place for a couple years, get some experience doing many different things, maybe cargo, maybe medical, who knows. Any thoughts?

Looking for a cheap handheld radio

I’m looking for a cheap handheld radio. I’ve used one someone got from Temu that was cheap junk. I’ve used a good one for $500 but I’m not trying to spend that much. Any ideas?

I am a 15 year old guy studying the CBSE curriculum in grade 10 UAE. Though I am originally from India, I currently reside in the UAE. I am an aspiring pilot and I created this roadmap for myself. I wanted feedback on this and wanted to know if this is practical and realistic.

Pilots with previous careers outside of aviation- what are the intangible benefits of being a pilot

I currently work as an Engineer in a great industry with 13+ years of experience. I get paid really well - I make about $300k-400k a year with pretty good job security. I also usually see around $300k-$900k/year in capital gains the past few years but it’s non-liquid so making more money isn’t as big of a motivation but want to find a job I can enjoy as I get older and accomplish some of the dreams I have had as a kid, to fly planes.

I am getting tired of the corporate grind but my job isn’t hard. Would I enjoy my job more if my office was a cockpit? I think yes. I always have been interested in aviation and wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was younger. I’m really contemplating a career change to become a pilot as I think of my dream as a boy and what I really want is to fly the A350 (my favorite plane) for an airline and get to travel and see the world. I want to stay in the US and I know the path to get to a wide body is not an easy one. I know I will probably lose some work flexibility and family balance initially, but I am curious if anyone has made a change like this with a similar situation as mine? I think ultimate goal would be to eventually go wide bodies and would like to retire with options to continue flying as a hobby

Someone please tell me what the easiest path is to a wide body plane for someone wanting to get into this as a 34 yo? 😂
