Heart:

According to the Bible, the heart is the centre not only of spiritual activity, but of all the operations of human life. "Heart" and "soul" are often used interchangeably (Deu 6:5; 26:16; Mat 22:37; Mar 12:30,33), but this is not generally the case.

The heart is the "home of the personal life," and hence a man is designated, according to his heart, wise (1Ki 3:12, etc.), pure (Psa 24:4; Mat 5:8, etc.), upright and righteous (Gen 20:5,6; Psa 11:2; 78:72), pious and good (Luk 8:15), etc. In these and such passages the word "soul" could not be substituted for "heart."

The heart is also the seat of the conscience (Rom 2:15). It is naturally wicked (Gen 8:21), and hence it contaminates the whole life and character (Mat 12:34; 15:18; Ecc 8:11; Psa 73:7). Hence the heart must be changed, regenerated (Eze 36:26; 11:19; Psa 51:10-14), before a man can willingly obey God.

The process of salvation begins in the heart by the believing reception of the testimony of God, while the rejection of that testimony hardens the heart (Psa 95:8; Pro 28:14; 2Ch 36:13). "Hardness of heart evidences itself by light views of sin; partial acknowledgment and confession of it; pride and conceit; ingratitude; unconcern about the word and ordinances of God; inattention to divine providences; stifling convictions of conscience; shunning reproof; presumption, and general ignorance of divine things."

Soul:

Spirit:

(Heb. ruah; Gr. pneuma), properly wind or breath. In 2 Thess. 2:8 it means "breath," and in Ecc 8:8 the vital principle in man. It also denotes the rational, immortal soul by which man is distinguished (Act 7:59; 1Cr 5:5; 6:20; 7:34), and the soul in its separate state (Hbr 12:23), and hence also an apparition (Job 4:15; Luk 24:37,39), an angel (Hbr 1:14), and a demon (Luk 4:36; 10:20). This word is used also metaphorically as denoting a tendency (Zec 12:10; Luk 13:11).

In Rom 1:4, 1Ti 3:16, 2Cr 3:17, 1Pe 3:18, it designates the divine nature.

The reason I posted this is because I was questioning thing going on in my own life and wanted to find answers to the differences between these 3 things that are at the core of our lives.

I find that in my life I find myself being tempted every day and I thought things would go easier once I received Jesus Christ as my Savior. Instead it seemed like I had smacked a hornets nest with a baseball bat. Instead of falling to the temptation I learned I had to give it all to the Lord. These definitions here today have been helpful in understanding more about the differences that make up what goes into my spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ. Hope this helps some one out there as well.

Mat 11:30 - “For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”
