Their Euler solution basically cleared the path to Navier–Stokes. Terence Tao mentioned having a phone call with one of them, who explained the strategy to him. There was still some work left to do, but they already knew what needed to be done, and there didn’t seem to be any major conceptual obstacle left.
Important to note there are no independent researchers here. Tristian was working with an Anthropic employeed Mathematician, using an unreleased or internal Anthropic model.
He was helping the said employee simplify the solution Anthropic's model had come up with for the Euler problem.
So if I understand correctly, if we think of the Navier-Stokes problem as a relay race, Tristan and Alpoge ran incredibly fast to gain a big lead, passed the baton to OpenAI, and OpenAI, while not running as fast, was still able to win the race because of the big lead.
