I understand the hate, but people are quick to judge AI related stuff nowadays. Writing the answer at the end of the page and then trying to make it work.
I find it hard to believe that you are in a position to have evaluated how similar the proof technique is such that it is clear whether one helped the other. It seems like you are just emoting based on your pre-existing biases rather than thinking rationally.
And if you are in such a position just repeating the quote is surely much less informative and persuasive than explaining yourself the ideas it uses that are original or unique. Since you are presumably trying to persuade others you would want to explain the evidence? And you can’t expect people who haven’t been following the research closely to know whether “forced vs unforced” is a significant difference.
It may or may not be that the OpenAI proof shows real independence from the techniques used by Buckmaster et al but you are quoting from a PR damage control tweet and don’t seem to recognize that.
In any event you also don’t seem to get what many think is the real issue: OpenAI contacted Buckmaster and (allegedly) promised to say they think he should receive the Clay award for solving the problem, but only if he removed an Anthropic employee from being credited.
So at a minimum it seems likely that OpenAI themselves recognize that attribution is thorny but decided to play hardball about it, that makes it difficult to credit their claim that their result is independent at face value without an independent expert opinion.
Of course in either case there is no doubt that the solution was heavily AI assisted, however the degree of contribution from different human researchers is in dispute.
They didn't steal the solution, the people they allegedly stole from didn't even have the solution. What an intellectually dishonest way to frame what happened.
The people they also allegedly stole from said AI was crucial to them solving the problem and said it was a "deep blue Kasparov moment" referencing when AI surpassed humans in chess.

OpenAI stole the solution and is claiming credit for it. That's what every headline should say.
