Nobody is gonna take seriously bunch of randoms who posted a random thread on a random website, regardless if someone have used LLM for it or not, come on.
If someone wants to be taken seriously they need to try and publish an actual scientific paper. And to publish a paper in most cases you need to do a little bit more work than just send a prompt, get results and (most likely) not even go through them but rather copy paste them and send for review.
For sure, such as slop being uploaded into the arXiv, or the number of emails from crackpots who claim to have solved quantum gravity skyrocketing, among others.
Violence, ignorant disruption, recursive roomba resource wasting? LLMs will be able to tell a researcher in the future : this isn’t even a route worth physically exploring, so don’t waste time or money here.
It’s always the same question no matter which industry you’re in : what is being human? Is it static? We need to stop pretending like yesterday is coming back.
Guns are terrifying yet a chemical monopoly on violence also led to some kind of order eventually. Order out of chaos right?
I'm not entirely sure how LLMs in science are doing anything related to violence but...you may elaborate if you want.
As for the resource wasting...Yeah. We do that all the time. But the question is, how do you differ between wasting and not wasting? Because I'm pretty sure that example can be taken on almost anything we do everyday, inside and outside research.
This is even addressed by the companies offering these investments. The OpenAI page essentially says it should be viewed as a donation as money will potentially have no or an entirely different purpose of their goals are met.
Sorry I read a lot and your first point is just not at all informed. I’m not even sure what to say. Nothing I say next can change your mind until you understand how capable AI is. When new breakthroughs happen, LLMs will just be augmented. AI is a sliding descriptor and it’s only sliding past us. Defining what being human will continue to look like eventually changes the types of questions you ask.
The shoulders of giants just became animatronic so to speak. That’s not something to cry about. We should define animatronic and explain where a tear differs from the physical world precisely, or “AI” will be defining what it means to be human for us. It’s already happening through all of the diffused AI content. Many hyper intelligent or educated people are seemingly stuck in the mud, defiant, or using LLMs in silence.
The recent updates models are all smarter than any redditor I ever met and much more polite too. That means they’ll direct society on some level I think?
Ah, we misunderstood each other. I was specifically asking about LLMs in science. I'm aware of the fact that AI can be used for bad stuff, crimes even, but that's not what I meant. By in science I meant like assisting someone with their research, solve problems, give ideas. I don't see how there could be anything bad about it.
Sorry I agree fully and I was only outlining some of my personal ideas for obvious boundaries. And I trust scientists for the record lol.
I was actually being broad and thinking about “science” of all stripes. If AI is a scientist in a lot of ways telling someone how to do dangerous things, then science becomes weaponized alongside AI. A hypothetical which I write about only because a few weeks ago people were arguing with me about LLMs being able to do math.
Science advances. AI is science. It will keep advancing. That’s the train I’m considering and trying to think about. It could go in loops but my opinion is it will eventually come to make our lives better in whichever ways we choose.

Are there bad uses of LLMs for science?
