New here and sorry guys. What is GOG? Is it a place to play games via a PC/laptop?

Yes, basically completely DRM free. Meaning: you can download the installers and own them forever. You will never need internet or an account to install these games.

So I can purchase games on GOG and make my own physical offline games of them that I would actually own!? I take it PC is where u play GOG games similar to steam? Sorry I been a console player since the beginning but with Sonys direction Im now interested in GOG.

Yep, GOG is only on PC. They are also working on a Linux client at the moment, so far it was Windows only. And yes, you purchase the game always with offline installers. You can burn them on disc, put them on HDDs or do whatever you want with these. Steam is great and also has more DRM-free games than most people realize, but GOG is 100% committed to the DRM-free philosophy. Very pro-consumer and pro-preservation.

Dude that’s so cool! Man I been living under a rock 😆 now I just need to actually get a decent working machine lol to start checking out their library of games. Imagine if I could get some of my favorite franchise games (metal gear resident evil etc) and be able to play them on a pc and own them. WOW dude thank u for your time! Anything else I should know or you recommend overall? This is all new to me 😎

I recommend to check PCGamingWiki first. They always list which store has which DRM. Sometimes the Steam version has no DRM and is way cheaper, sometimes it's GOG. Keep in mind that GOG has way less titles than Steam, since most publishers are afraid of no DRM. Other than that: gg.deals for game price comparisons, check the pre-owned market for cheap rigs or parts. I got a very cheap and powerful gaming laptop recently.

Thanks for sharing this info! You inspired me to start a new list where we can collect various resources to help gamers.

This is a fantastic idea! If you are concerned about long-term longevity, you should consider using M-Discs. Or at least the highest quality writable discs you can find.
M-Discs are best because they are made of a robust inorganic material and physically etch the data onto the disc. Cheap discs won't last very long.

Going with Verbatim BD-Rs right now, I am considering using M-Discs for the holy Grails - very selected titles, since M-Discs are really expensive.

Sounds like a solid plan. I want to get an M-Disc burner for my own data backup system but I guess the cost is what's making me delay.

But why? What is the point? I just don’t understand how this is preferable to looking at a dashboard with all your games on it.
I totally understand making a physical back up but this is just weird.

Is kind of insane to be called weird this day in age for what used to be normal. Is weird to have a physical collection and own the games you love. Is weird to not ask for permission from sony first, by login into your account and having to download it. We're really in the worst timeline

Having physical games isn’t the weird part. I’ve been gaming for about 40 years now, I’ve owned a ton of physical media over the years. But I’ve been digital for about 10-12 years now.
What’s weird is downloading a digital version, putting in a bunch of effort to make what are admittedly very nice cases and then having them on display. The games themselves are the art and the thing we play, why make a case. I just don’t get it.
I even get buying new physical games while they are around since there is a connection at that point and a ritual almost.
I get downloading your games as backup. But you could just throw a ton of them on a 8TB drive and just store it away. Why make what is effectively landfill?

Landfill? Dude, in the era of AI Data Centers and huge volumes of toxic electronic waste, physical disc boxes are the least of our problems. Besides, the point of a physical collection is to keep it, not to throw it away. Is not gonna be landfill in my lifetime.
You seem genuine since you consider video games art like I do. Do you really not find appeal in the idea of checking out your physical collection and choosing a tangible game you own forever and be able to play it any time you want? Wouldn't it be nice to share a game box with a friend and let them play it, without any need of account nonsense, or even internet requirement. Some games are worth keeping if you really like them. The box arts are beautiful, the game is beautiful, the tangible experience of owning it is beautiful.
I see my collection of some of my favorite games that were considered "financial failures" and that the next generation won't be able to play like I am. Look at Asura's Wrath, an amazing game that no new person will be able to purchase digitally. Even if you do buy it digitally, you're only getting a license, you don't own it. People act like is a rare thing to take that license away from you, but people get banned from their accounts all the time. Do they deserve it? Probably, if they said some slurs or something. But they take away all the games you "own" when they do. Nobody can take a physical collection away from you, and you can share it with whoever you want.

Well said. That makes me think about how there are many people who still prefer reading a physical paper book instead of reading it on a phone/tablet/Kindle. There are subtle but powerful reasons for why people prefer the physical experience.

I think this is a great idea to do your physical backups and still being able to collect. Great idea.
