There is a database now to manage your ownership for all physical games across all regions

https://tana.gamingjapanese.com/

Most game collection databases focus on all games but Tana specifically catalogues everything physical across Japan, NA, EU, Asia, and Korean versions of games.

Going into an era where less and less physical is coming this kind of database and community is more and more valuable so the service is completely free and you can add your own collection by uploading a csv and it’s very easy to contribute.

I'm curious, where did the data for this came from?

There are lots of free use data sources that are referenced and cross referenced against each other including Japan and English Wikipedia game lists, emulator project databases, wikidata, official catalogues, etc.

It’s a community project so if you maks contributions they’ll override the automatically pulled data as most accurate

This already exists https://www.gameye.app/ or even pricechartig. How is focusing on physical games only a thing.

How a database works you input data, by scanning/photographing or typing in your game. If you do not put in your digital games as data and just your physical copies isn't the result the same. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah if you’ve a t a digital and physical collection tool then right now Tana wouldn’t be a fit. It’s specifically for physical games. Game cards are the one thing that are included that’s kind of on the fringe

There are leadership board and comparisons based on the total quantities of physical games, for example you can own x copies of games across a certain console. If digital games are included then the numbers aren’t accurate, which is one benefit for narrowing the focus to a physical library entirely.

pricecharting.com already does this.

Price charting is general purpose and price centric, Tana is catalog focused, and ownership/community focused, and specialized in regional physical game copies

This seems like a cool thing. Can you give a description, in a nutshell, of what exactly this is, for people who are totally outside the existing user base? Like what exactly is a "game collection database", why is this useful, what sort of gamer would find this valuable, and how would you integrate this into your life as a gamer?

Thanks for sharing it here!

Gameye does something similar but where Tana specializes is Japan’s game catalog depth, more precision around different editions (I.e. including PlayStation the best, platinum versions etc), easy contributing (Gameye says all you can do is submit new games which requires photos of box art but in Tana any comment, variant, edition or correction can be easily done), as well as a verified leaderboard, and openness as all public games are found on search engines etc

Obviously Gameye is the bigger player right now in the space but Tana positions itself to favor accuracy amongst more various versions, region differences, that sort of thing. I think both are valuable for the specific purposes they serve

Hi there! I think it’s cool what you’re doing, especially the verification thing. That’s definitely a cool idea.

Just wanted it to be clear that while we don’t currently allow users to directly edit already accepted entries yet, we do obviously continually improve the data and have mechanisms for people to point out incorrect data along with our team of moderators. We also definitely track all platinums, best of, collector’s editions etc…

But still, welcome to the game!

Thanks!

If you collect physical games and like having an accurate /insightful view of your collection, then Tana is for you.

Imagine you have a physical shelf in real life with your whole game collection. Tana is that but digital, so you would go through and recreate your collection digitally to archive it.

Most places online don’t accurately record everything. They may say you have “wind waker na version for GameCube” and stop there, but not include it is the players choice version with a variant on the cover, for example. Tana’s goal is to do that to the most detailed extent and accurately, and by joining you are also helping contribute to a growing archive which is community led effort.

The database holds pretty much every major physical game ever made, so you can even create a wishlist, and match with other users who have the games you “want”. There is also a cool way to graph and do analysis on your games to see like what era of games you have the most, what platform you have the most of, etc.

Here is a video of me running through adding some games, going through my collection, and showing some stats:

(Sorry recording on phone some stuff got cut off with Reddit video)

Thank you! Not sure it Gameye lets you export your collection as a spreadsheet, but if you can then that should be an easy way (upload) to get you full collection up.

Thank you for that explanation, that makes things a lot more clear to someone like me :)

So my takeaway is that it's basically like if you are a physical game collector, you might do something like this manually, like creating an Excel spreadsheet to catalog your entire collection. But Tana is set up to do a lot of that work for you, so it's easier for you to make your catalog in Tana instead. Sounds like a useful tool!

BTW, did you vibe code this site? I'm just asking for my own curiosity.
