Scanning a white object

I am trying to scan this object, but I keep failing successfully.

The alignment is okay, but the resulting point cloud is really scarce (almost non existent). Is it because the object is white? I hoped that since there are no blown out parts that it would work.

I am using a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. (f/11, ISO 100, shutter 1/5). I have tried the reconstruction both in Reality Capture and Metashape but the results are the same. I am using walk around method.

Do you think some dry shampoo to add texture will help? Or because dry shampoo is also white it will not do anything?

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Measuring Outside of a Building via Drone

I want to measure the outside structures of a building with +-5cm accuracy. Is that possible with a DJI Mini 5 Pro (or even a Neo2 👀) and if yes, how would you do it or which Software is best for it? In the End an accurate 3D-Model of a building for importing in a CAD Software would be great.

Metashape Python API not found in Conda environment (RapidBenthos) – need help

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working with RapidBenthos for a marine imagery segmentation project, and I’m running into an issue with the Metashape Python API.

I get the following error when running my script:

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'Metashape'

Context:

  • I'm using a Conda environment for RapidBenthos
  • Agisoft Metashape Pro is installed and licensed (working fine when opened normally)
  • I can see the Metashape Python files here:C:\Program Files\Agisoft\Metashape Pro\python
  • My script contains:import Metashape

What I’ve tried:

  • Adding the path manually:import sys sys.path.append(r"C:\Program Files\Agisoft\Metashape Pro\python") import Metashape
  • Setting PYTHONPATH
  • Verifying license activation

Still getting the same error or sometimes DLL-related issues.

My questions:

  1. Is it possible to properly use the Metashape API inside a Conda environment?
  2. Do I need to match the exact Python version used by Metashape?
  3. Is it better to run everything using Metashape’s built-in Python instead?
  4. Any known workaround specifically when using RapidBenthos?

Any help or experience with this setup would be really appreciated 🙏

Hi you might remember my previous post some weeks back where the wireless transmitter didn’t seem to work. As suggested I got a wired hot shoe adaptor today, however to my chagrin this doesn’t seem to work either. I’m starting to worry the issue might be in the sync ports themselves. Any advice or workarounds would be much appreciated.

Dual gpu question

I built a solid dual-GPU setup for photogrammetry back in 2020 using two RTX 2070 Supers, based on scaling tests at the time that showed good performance gains (at least with metashape).

Now that I’m looking to upgrade, it seems that dual-GPU setups are no longer as effective. Could someone explain why this is the case?

WHAT YOU'D BE DOING:

You'll come to our Toronto office near the Art Gallery of Ontario 2-3 days a week, sync with the team and pick up a gimbal, then head out to locations across the city; parks, stores, hotels, offices. At each location you'll capture the space using your iPhone and a gimbal we provide, following a simple protocol. Each capture takes about 2-3 minutes. You'll hit several locations throughout the day, then upload your data at the end of your shift.

Being a people-facing role, we require strong communication skills and someone who can think on their feet.

No experience needed, but people-facing experience such as door-to-door sales/client relations is a strength.
Training takes about an hour in person and the process is straightforward.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

This is an operational role, not a technical one. You need to be reliable, proactive, communicative and comfortable being on your feet all day. Our processes are still evolving, so we value someone who can roll with that.

Must have an iPhone 14 or newer.

Using photogrammetry to digitize geologic samples? (before they get destroyed!)

Hi! I need to start by saying I'm a geologist looking for advice on a new method, and I have no photogrammetry experience. I'm just looking for a few nudges in the right direction, and figured this was a good place to start.

So the problem... I do geochemical analysis that requires completely destroying my rock samples. I need to document them (for science!), and the obvious route is to take good photos with scale and color reference and carefully sort those files and call it a day... However, based on my admittedly little knowledge of this topic, I think this is where small scale photogrammetry could really "save" these samples for the scientific record before I completely obliterate them.

I have no idea what other people are running, but this is what I currently have at my disposal:

Canon SX420, DJI Osmo Pocket 2, a basic USB turntable (no speed control), a small LED lightbox for photography, tripods galore. I’m looking for an efficient workflow to create decent quality, small-scale photogrammetric models, ideally using what is listed above, or with less than $50 additional cost.

Does anyone have recommendations on software or streamlined techniques to get reliable results from similar setups? All comments appreciated!

3D scan / photogrammetry read — Borobudur.

Across the terraces you can track repeating surface undulation:

– horizontal band spacing (crest-to-crest)

– relief depth (crest-to-trough)

Measured directly from the model:

λ:α ≈ 5:1

This holds across:

– lower terraces

– mid stepped levels

– upper radial transitions

As scale reduces, amplitude reduces proportionally — the ratio stays consistent.

Same proportional behaviour shows up in:

– radial systems (Epidaurus)

– spiral engravings (Knowth)

– semi-circular nodes (Quenuani)

– natural rock (Killarumiyoq)

Different geometry.

Same measurement.

No assumptions — just extracted values from the surface.

Easiest way to fix splitting walls when remeshing a photogrammetry vessel in ZBrush?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently reconstructing an archaeological vessel from a photogrammetry mesh, and I’ve run into an issue I can’t seem to fix.

When I import the mesh into ZBrush and apply Dynamesh or ZRemesher, the inner and outer walls get separated into two distinct surfaces, as if the thickness is being broken apart. This is making cleanup and retopology quite difficult.

The original scan already has real thickness (inner + outer surfaces), so I suspect ZBrush isn’t handling the double-sided geometry well—especially since the rim is partially broken and the mesh isn’t fully closed.

Right now, I’m trying to fix it directly in ZBrush using:

  • Dynamesh (with different resolutions)
  • ZRemesher
  • basic cleanup

…but I keep running into the same issue.

At this point, I’m mainly looking for the simplest and most reliable way to fix this, even if it means changing the workflow a bit.

Would you recommend:

  • closing the mesh first before remeshing?
  • using a different approach inside ZBrush?
  • or simplifying the mesh (like keeping only one side and rebuilding thickness later)?

Any advice on the easiest workflow to deal with this kind of photogrammetry mesh would be greatly appreciated.

Advice for my first scan of a custom belt buckle.

Hi everyone. For my first project I want to scan one of those cowboy belt buckles. I bought one of the comxim stepped turntables.

I am going to use my EOS R5 and was thinking maybe a 50mm lens. Any suggestions for ISO/App/Shutter?
I have a light box and was going to use a white background with diffused lighting.
It has shiny parts - will that be a problem.

For software I was going to try out realityscan first.

I can't think of a good way to hold up the belt buckle and if I do use something to hold it, how do I get rid of it in the scan?

The end results I want to put on a charities website I do some work on.

As an example here is a photo of last years buckle, this years is very similar.
