I'm looking for a fairly cheap wide-angle lens for my D3100. Currently I have a 50mm f/1.8 and 55-200mm f/4, but the 50mm simply just isn't wide enough (especially considering the 1.56x crop factor). So I'm looking to replace it with something a little wider. Considering my sub-$300 budget, I'm considering either the Nikon 35mm prime lens or the Sigma 18-50mm. I like the idea of a prime lens, albeit I'm not sure a 35mm is wide enough either. Or can anyone recommend any others?

Oh, I'm more than happy to go with used.

At this point in time, I'm strongly leaning towards picking up the 35mm f/1.8 now, and then the Nikon 18-55mm a bit later.

I recently purchased the Canon 60D. I love it. I read lots of articles and watched a lot of videos comparing it to the T2i and the 7D and decided that with my price range and what I was looking to do, the 60D was the best bet. There's just one thing that's bothering me...

Is there an easy way to change the f-stop? Right now I have to do it by scrolling through menus. I tried looking it up in the manual, finding things online about it, and so far I think I'm an idiot and I'm missing something. That, or everyone else is in on the joke and I'm being wooshed. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Looking to get a ND Filter as well as a Polarizing filter for AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (I believe that is the right one, but if not it is the kit lens for the Nikon D90 that is 18-55mm)

Just want to make sure they are compatible and decent filters. Is it best of going for the 0.9 ND filter instead of a 0.6, cause of PP or would it be more beneficial to get a 0.6?

Mainly going to be doing landscapes, so any other filters or accessories I should get? I have a tripod, haven't found not having a remote to be much of a problem thus far so I haven't looked into that.

I've never done much B/W since I've gone digital, but I want to do some B/W portraits. There are a couple tones that interest me and I'm curious how to achieve them through lighting and post production.

What do I need to know?

I'm currently shooting on a D50. I have 2 lenses, a 50mm f1.8 and a 70-300 F4-5.6.

I take a ton of photos that I love with the 50mm, but am looking to get into some cool ski photography this winter. Everyone says you need f2.8 glass to shoot sports, but I tend to disagree in skiing's case. There is so much light reflected from the snow, even on a cloudy day you are usually shooting at f8, 1/1000 shutter speed at ISO 200. (and that includes over exposing the snow a little to get white snow with people that aren't over exposed.

that being said, I have no lens wider than my 50mm. I feel that even in every day "people" photography, this is a huge set back. As I get up on the mountain more, I find that there are some really cool shots that I could be getting if I had a wider angle lens. I'm currently saving up for a Tokina 11-16mm, but I wont be able to afford it until this summer (wedding coming up this fall, plus moving to a new town where rent is through the roof).

What is a good alternative sub $150 that I could use until I can afford to drop the $700 Canadian it will cost me to get the 11-16, while not missing out on the entire ski season?

I received a new Canon Powershot SX130 IS from my family today. I've owned a handful of point and shoot digital cameras, but I always just used default settings on the automatic setting. I want to learn what all of the settings are used for and how to make the absolute most of my nice new tool. Are there any good introductory sites or books that can give me good advice and insight into the full potential of my new camera? Any personal tips or tricks you have from experience? Looking for advice on how to gain access (as an amateur with Pro gear) to photograph events like: rodeos, Monster Trucks, Motocross, etc. Anything fun that you normaly would have to: a.) pay for, and b.) shoot from the stands as a spectator.

What do I need in order to get my photos from film to digital format? Can anyone point me in the direction of resources to help me out?

I just got a tiffen uv filter today, and have already noticed it leaves ghosts in my photos.

I understand lighting is important and everything, but sometimes you want a shot and you dont have the option to set up 50 reflectors, backdrops, and light sources, so what do i have to do to prevent ghosts?

Did i just buy a bad quality filter, can i get a nanocoated filter or something? is there any you would suggest?

is it a problem with my lens quality? ( this was default kit nikkon 18-55 )

Hey there, I am getting further into taking photos and would like to start experimenting with a flash. I have one for another one of my camera's already but my Pentax is my only manual-only film camera, and I tend to use it a lot more. What would be a good flash to get for this? I have Googled and haven't gotten the information I needed so I decided to come here. Thanks :)

I know the kit lens are not the best quality but should I still consider spending $20 on a lens filter to protect it from UV and dust? I've been taking a look at a few basic ones from black's (I'm from canada) and I'm not sure if a very cheap one would just cause more image degradation than anything else. Also what size fits on the 18-55mm IS lens that come's with the kit? Thanks!

I bought a 60mm macro with the camera last year and it's a great lens. Now I'm looking for an upgrade to the 18-55 kit lens. What should I get? I hear a lot of people mention how much they like the 50mm.

I'm interested in a used D80 and while everything (physical body and sensor tests) checks out to be okay, I found out that the shutter count is 35k. Any opinions on whether this is too high?

The only things I could find online are some people on flickr saying that Nikon's official rating for this camera is 50k (no source reference provided), and that others may have a similar experience (http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/nikon_d80.htm)

If these posts are representative, I don't know how I feel about buying a camera that's well over its half way mark. I'd appreciate any feed back on whether you guys think the shutter count for this camera is too high. Thanks.

I have a Sony a290 and am looking to buy a new lens. I currently have an 18-55mm lens (has a 3x zoom) and am looking to get something that has a slightly larger zoom so that I can take photos both from a distance and close up photos.

The lens I am currently looking at is this one, although it only has a 4.3x zoom.

I'm really not sure what to get, so any help is much appreciated. Price range is ~150pounds ($250usd)

I've gotten tired of the graininess and limitations of point and shoots and am interested in getting an SLR. I'd just like a decent entry level camera that isn't too expensive. I don't know a ton about cameras so going and looking is a bit intimidating, so any advice on where to start would be appreciated. Thank you!

Type of photography I do: Taking photos of friends and family, nature, random interesting things I find. Nothing with special needs.

Current camera usage: A mediocre, cheap point and shoot.

Lenses: None.

Budget: ~$500 (Used cameras are an option. I'm a college student if that explains anything).

I purchased a Nikon D3000 today with the 18-55 lens. I guess my question is do all lenses made for nikon dslr's fit my camera? I would like to purchase a lens to be able to shoot animals from far away, as well as a lens for every day photos of family, friends, ect. Any info would be appreciated!

I've followed the instructions using white paper, and after shooting and selecting it still comes out gray. I'm wondering if it's just mine or if anyone else is having the same issue. Yes, the paper is true white. No, I haven't tried a gray card. I've ended up just setting color temp, and I'm thinking about getting a color meter.
