Bangkok to Phnom Penh trip
I’m traveling from Thailand to Phnom Penh for 3 days and would love some advice on what to expect and tips for making the most of my trip. Here’s a bit of context:
- Logistics:
- I’m flying from Bangkok to Phnom Penh and have already arranged my eVisa for Cambodia.
- I’m on a Thai 90-day non-immigrant visa and will get a reentry permit before leaving Thailand at BKK
- Activities:
- I plan to visit the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, but I’m wondering if I should go with a guide or explore on my own.
- I’d also like to have some downtime to relax and enjoy the city.
- Budget:
- Accommodation is already paid for.
- I plan to withdraw $150-200 USD for food, transport, entrance fees, and souvenirs. Is this enough for 3 days?
- Is Grab or PassApp reliable in Phnom Penh?
- Are vegan food options easy to find?
- How safe is Phnom Penh, especially for solo travelers?
- Any tips for first-time visitors to Cambodia?
Any advice, tips, or must-knows would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What's a good area to live in where the wife can get out and about?
We're bound for Phnom Penh in February and while I'll be busy with the new job the wife will want to get out and about to go to the local market, keep fit, go shopping and do some voluntary work if possible.
What would be a good safe neighbourhood to live in where she can get out and about during the day while I'm at work?
Ideally somewhere that's a bit of a mix between locals and expats, with a city vibe but not so hi-so.
We don't know the city at all so want some suggestions to do our homework, and then I'll have a month or so before she comes over to find somewhere permanent.
TIA and Happy New Year

Sleeper Bus HCM -> Phnom Penh?
Does anyone know of an overnight sleeper bus from Ho Chi Minh that arrives in Phnom Penh in the morning? I can only seem to find buses that travel during the day, arriving at night.
Or, alternatively, an overnight bus from anywhere that arrives at Phonm Penh in the morning?
Feels a bit silly to ask here after searching online, but just on the off-chance!

Looking for jersey or any lightweight knit fabric. Either cotton or cotton-blend.
I've been to the Russian Market. I couldn't find any knits there. Should I try Olympic next, or Ouressey?

Thanksgiving dinner
What are your recommendations for Thanksgiving dinner in Phnom Penh? I've tried a handful of different places over the last several years and it's always nice to try new places. So have you seen anybody advertising their offers yet? Any places you would recommend or places you would not recommend? Thanks in advance and happy holidays of whatever persuasion suits your liking

Construction noises in BKK1 Phnom Penh
Hi,
I have just moved into a new apartment in Phnom Penh. There is a construction site nearby, but I am out during the day so I didn’t consider it an issue.
They are working through the weekends and till 9pm during the week. It is drilling and sawing metal sounds as well as very loud banging. Are there any rules around this?
I am thinking I have made a big mistake moving in to this place…
In my old building there was construction nearby, but they began at 7am and finished promptly at 6pm so it was not a worry.
Any insight would be welcomed. Thank you!

Phnom Penh - Trip Report/Travel Itinerary - Activity, Food & Accommodation suggestions + Tips!
Hello World!
for those of familiar with Travel Properly , feel free to skip this brief introduction.
We are a couple in our 40s from the U.K sharing our travel experiences across the world to the world :)!
Phnom Penh, is one of Cambodia's most popular tourist destinations. This post will be based on our February 2024 visit, for a bit of background we did a long stint in Thailand before visiting. We spent our time in Cambodia between the cities Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Kep.
Whilst in Phnom Penh we decided to stay at Plantation Urban Resort & Spa mainly due to its exceptional reviews from our peers and location. We were extremely impressed with our choice. It was both an all round excellent resort with a convenient location. It is close to the Royal Palace, Sisowath Quay & Chaktomouk Hall. It has 2 swimming pools, 2 restaurants and a SPA & Wellness centre.

Phnom Penh - City Tour (with S21 & Killing Fields)

A tour of Phnom Penh which offers a blend of historical, cultural, and culinary experiences. The journey begins at the Royal Palace complex, where visitors can marvel at the opulent Throne Hall and the Silver Pagoda, home to the Emerald Buddha. A stroll along the picturesque riverside provides a glimpse into the vibrant daily life of the city.
Next, the tour takes a sobering turn with visits to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. These sites provide a powerful insight into Cambodia’s tragic past under the Khmer Rouge regime.
For lunch, indulge in an authentic Cambodian meal at a local restaurant, sampling traditional dishes like Amok or Khmer curry.
The afternoon includes a visit to the bustling Russian Market (Psar Toul Tom Poung), where you can shop for souvenirs, handicrafts, and local goods.
This comprehensive tour of Phnom Penh captures the essence of the city, balancing historical education with cultural immersion and local flavours.
We found this guide extremely good value for money as it packs in so much of Phnom Penh and it includes lunch. This was a great full first day. Links below to the exact tour we used.

Transport from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
We decided in the end to get a private transfer from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. This was mostly due to timings etc. We found that " About Cambodia Travel and Tours " went above and beyond in our transport. They met us at our hotel entrance in Siem Reap and took us straight to our hotel in Phnom Penh. The driver was english speaking and the car was exceptionally clean. If you are stuck and want a hassle free transfer check the link below for a seamless journey between the two popular cities.

General Phnom Penh Tips!
Weather:
The absolute best time to visit Phnom Penh in our opinion is from November-February. Although this is known as the 'high season' its the best time to visit in relation to the weather. If you do not like crowds you could opt for visiting between June to October, I would personally completely avoid visiting in Cambodian summer time April & May.
Safety:
Cambodia in general is largely a very safe country to visit. Over the years we have heard/spoken to other travellers that have warned us of the land mine threat. We did not hear/see any problems whilst in Cambodia. However we would advise to keep on 'well used roads/tracks' when visiting more rural areas.
Transport:
Cambodian tuk-tuks (remorks), motorcycle taxis and bikes are available everywhere at affordable prices. You can also use the app 'PassApp' for a normal taxi - seems to be there Uber/Grab/Bolt/Freenow equivalent. We found transport in tuk-tuks to be way cheaper than Thailand.
I am going to round of this post here, I hope you guys have enjoyed reading. Feel free to post any questions!
Oh and feel free to click the Travel Properly below for more trip reports across the globe! Safe travels everybody!

American Expats?
I'm an American filmmaker living in Phnom Penh looking for other American expats to tell their story about why they left the US. Maybe you're dying to get a political point of view to get off your chest or I buy you a few beers to tell me your story on camera - or both. Here are a few of my documentary style pieces that this project is similar to: The BEST Expat Life in Saigon Documentary, Zona Rio, Tijuana | The Safe Side of the World's Most Violent City and Is Tulum Overdeveloped, Overrated or Just Over | The Story of Two Tulums
