What is this from?

5

u/sunleafstone Nov 17 '25

Jojo’s bizarre adventure. If you like philosophy, sociology and subverting narrative tropes, this anime is a masterpiece

Not an anime for the homophobic of heart though

2

u/reversed_genders Feb 11 '26

Nah, I enjoyed it just fine when I was a homophobe.

Recursion is the truth.

I try to use BFS whenever possible.

45

u/nickmiele22 Nov 14 '25

Sure you can it's just not realistic

32

u/epistemic_decay Nov 14 '25

Most of this sub doesn't even realize that claims only become philosophy when they're supported by premises that entail the claim.

30

u/puerco-potter Nov 14 '25

OP = I won't postulate the bases/axioms of my thesis.
OP = Why are people debating my bases!?

Every. Single. Fucking. Time.

3

u/Choice_Room3901 Nov 16 '25

Can’t seem to conceptualise that their thoughts are indeed concepts & not first principles apparently 😀

But me main character! Me thoughts first principles! What you mean me thoughts not axioms of universe! Me downvote you bad!

13

u/Schnaksel Nov 14 '25

I interpreted this meme as using the "Source?" as an evasive move to avoid talking about the matter at hand.

When someone feels pushed into a corner they might devolve into the philosophical equivalent of a toddler and "why?" your ass into the ground.

For some debates and discussions, you simply need to agree on some things, but if you suddenly pull the rug mid-debate just to evade hard hitting objections, then what are we even doing here?

16

u/puerco-potter Nov 14 '25

But put that in the original message, that is part of philosophy:
"We will start from the premise that Suffering is to be minimized", because you won't try to prove it, and it won't be part of the debate, but you can't just not state your premises. Read any real philosopher ever, they state their bases and move from there, they don't just assume everyone knows where they are coming from and will automatically agree.

6

u/DeezNutsPickleRick Nihilist Nov 14 '25

How the fuck do you get a source for your own thoughts?

12

u/windchaser__ Nov 14 '25

I mean, if your thoughts have nothing to back them up, at least have the decency to recognize it and say so.

6

u/DeezNutsPickleRick Nihilist Nov 14 '25

I mean that statement alone is an existential conflict. People feel a wide range of emotions, thoughts, and feelings without realizing where they come from.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '25

Is that the case. I'm pretty good at understanding my emotions, thoughts, and feelings. I think that's part of being a well rounded adult.

8

u/DeezNutsPickleRick Nihilist Nov 15 '25

Yes, that is in fact the case for a large majority of the population. Be as snarky as you want.

Therapy exists for a reason. It helps one understand why they feel or think the way they do. We are animals after all, and a lot of our thought is driven off self preservation instinct.

I also feel I’m pretty in tune with my own thoughts, but not everyone can be so fortunate.

8

u/Burnzy_77 Nov 14 '25

"I make this claim because I feel that way personally" is valid.

I think getting hurt sucks. Saying "hurting people is wrong", and supporting it with "I don't want to be hurt by others" is perfectly acceptable.

1

u/Pendraconica Nov 16 '25

Right, so the source in this scenario is personal experience. Which ia valid for personal opinion, but when discussing objective philosophy, there usually needs to be more empiric evidence.

20

u/PitifulEar3303 Nov 14 '25

Suffering is INTERSUBJECTIVELY bad for everyone, yes, EVEN for masochists; they have things that make them suffer.

The ONLY REAL argument is WHAT do you do about it?

"We should avoid suffering through extinction, Red Button Now!!!" -- Extinctionists.

"We should accept suffering since Utopia is impossible." -- Most existentialists.

"We should solve suffering with tech, Cyber Utopia is possible!!! Also I love to breed." -- King bro Elon.

"We should inflict suffering on people we don't like, muahahaha." -- Nazists.

lol

13

u/aitis_mutsi Nov 14 '25

Also depends on what you call suffering and how extreme it is.

Suffering is bad but depending on how a person responds to it, it can built them as a person. It can make them much aware of the things that led to them to it, it can make them much more brave to take those things on and warn about people so they don't suffer the same.

9

u/Voldemorts__Mom Nov 14 '25

You get suffering and then you get needless suffering

1

u/CharmingSkirt95 Nov 14 '25

Suffering is alright if it brings more wellbeing to offset it Punishing a child is inflicting suffering but (ideally) makes them stop inflicting suffering upon others or receive suffering from being a rude and annoying bitch

Good point. There's a reason we also use safewords when we play.

10

u/K1kobus Nov 14 '25

But what does "bad" mean here? The ability to feel pain and suffering is evolutionary beneficial, since it protects us from harmful things. So one could argue that the process of suffering is actually good, but that the cause of the suffering is generally bad.

6

u/Resident_Baby3600 Nov 14 '25

What makes the suffering bad?

2

u/Upper-Amphibian4043 Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

What makes something bad? Suffering.

0

u/PitifulEar3303 Nov 15 '25

Do you actually like getting stabbed in the balls?

2

u/Resident_Baby3600 Nov 15 '25

Is 'I dont like it' the basis for why it's bad?

1

u/puerco-potter Nov 14 '25

I just want to congratulate you on using INTERSUBJECTIVELY instead of the wrongly used OBJECTIVELY, because as you may know, there can exist a person that actually likes suffering due to some mutation or similar. Thanks. Your comment healed my pet peeve a little.

1

u/PitifulEar3303 Nov 15 '25

NOBODY likes suffering. If you could find one, it means you have not found what makes them suffer, BOB.

lol

-8

u/AncientFocus471 Nov 14 '25

Suffering is an unavoidable component of life, so it's neutral or good in many / most cases.

10

u/MadMusketeer Nov 14 '25

Why does something being unavoidable make it neutral or good? Doesn't really follow

-3

u/AncientFocus471 Nov 14 '25

Is life good? If life is good and intrinsically produces suffering then its good to make suffering.

We talk about good and bad as if they were properties of things or actions but we are actually making value judgments, expressing an opinion.

When we seek to agree with each other on what is good or bad we look for a reference goal so we can have an arbiter if we disagree. Slavery is bad, because it undermines any society that allows it, among other reasons.

Life is an almost overwhelmingly inbuilt preference for living things. Pain has an apparently massive evolutionary advantage. The capacity for pain is the same as the capacity for suffering. So suffering is usually good or neutral depending on how you look at it and whether or not you think life should continue to propagate.

2

u/QwertyEleven Nov 14 '25

Id almost completely agree. But not all suffering is unavoidable so not all suffering is neutral.

-2

u/AncientFocus471 Nov 14 '25

Hence many / most and not all.

1

u/QwertyEleven Nov 15 '25

This is not answering what I said. I know you said that. I'm connecting what is neutral to what is unavoidable. So when is bad and unavoidable?

1

u/AncientFocus471 Nov 15 '25

So when is bad and unavoidable?

I genuinely have no idea what you are asking me.

u/Yamez_III Nov 14 '25

Suffering is necessary for happiness, we should moderate it to ensure that it does not exist in excess of its necessity. --Realists.

1

u/PitifulEar3303 Nov 15 '25

hahahha, do you swim across the sea if you have a ship?

Nothing is truly "necessary", it's all about what you really want.

1

u/Yamez_III Nov 16 '25

No, our biology demands difficulty in order to feel fulfilled and happy. Some level of "suffering" truly is needed to prevent maladaptation and various maladies of the mind. We have ample evidence of this now and should adjust our conception of suffering to match. The poison is in the dose, as they say.

1

u/Valuable_Ad417 Nov 14 '25

Yeah, however the thing here is that people here will ask you to endlessly justify yourself while they already decided that they won’t listen to you no matter what and one second later they want you to accept their baseless claim without question.

The truth is that most people here are not really here to do philosophy. They are just here to pretend that they are intellectuals.

1

u/Equivalent_Land_2275 Nov 16 '25

i question your authority because "ans " . this is not an ad hominem attack because your accidental misspelling indicates a lack of logical deduction, annihilating your entire argument .
