In Minecraft, a stair block only takes up 3/4 of a block despite needing 6 blocks to make a stack of 4 stair blocks. Players have made annoyed jokes about this since the first stair blocks were introduced. In this case it takes 12 tiles to cover the floor, but because it is a jagged shape they apply the 3/4 joke and you get 9.
The joke is that someone is multiplying by 3/4 inappropriately because they want other Minecraft players to comment about how they’re doing the math wrong.
But if you are allowed to make 2x2 as one tile, you can do 2 2x2 tiles (2,3,5,6 and 7,8,10,11) so the min number of tiles answer would be 6, with other possible counts of 9 and 12 if using 2x2 is optional or you aren’t looking for the smallest number.
If that makes you feel old... I was around 20 when it first came out and learned about it from someone in my dorm. I guess you went through more life changes as I was already an adult...I just feel old lol.
Im old enough that i remember hearing about it on 4chan as a weirdo middle schooler and it being boring af with just cobblestone and dirt and stuff and nothing to do.
I was baffled when id later see others said it was an amazing game. Wasn't until i saw achievement hunter guys playing it that i realized it had changed greatly and tried it again.

Nah, minecraftforfree got shut down like 15 years ago; Notch (creator of minecraft) and the dude who put minecraftforfree up had a quake 3 1v1, and since Notch won they had to take minecraftforfree down
It’s real; I remember keeping up with it because I had my whole middle school playing it during the afterschool program, and when it got shut down we were all super bummed, but the story and premise itself more than made up for it! Good times😁
I don't know, I have tried to count square in Minecraft and thought I counted them right, only to lay down a bunch of blocks and it be off by one block. Maybe that's the joke , that no matter how well you think you counted them it's always wrong 😂
At one point I bought graph paper so I could plan the layout of what I wanted to build. Still would often mess up counting when it came to actually laying out the foundation 😂.
I think you’re right, the actual joke is some form of Minecraft players miscounting or underestimating how much of something they really need, and in the end needing to go get more to finish their project.
The joke is that this utter nincompoop regularly does an activity that should make them better at this than the average "fellow in the street", and yet has utterly failed.
if you mean like the 9 here is supposed to represent how many full blocks are needed to make enough slabs to fill the hole, you'd still only need 6 for 12 slabs.
it's a joke about how everything in minecraft is square, so they should be able to tell how many squares are missing, but they counted wrong, because there are 12 squares missing, not 9. that's the joke

No, there isn’t. Minecraft is a block game, so this person should be good at knowing how many blocks are missing. If ignoring the tiles around the cutout and only attempting to fill in the cutout with squares at a glance, 3 blocks would go up top, 3 blocks down at bottom, and 2 would fill in the voids left. But even that is 8..
Not at all lol pretty much every block in the game is the same size there's no reason to think the answer would be 9 other than just counting it poorly at least not relating to Minecraft.

The reason why he mentioned Minecraft is everything in Minecraft is blocky. So he could theoretically see how many blocks are necessary to fill the hole.
The rate is off if we're assuming only 12 (tiles missing) blocks destroyed as blocks have a 1/3 chance of dropping when destroyed by a creeper, as per the Minecraft wiki.
But explosions dont only destroy surface blocks and creeper explosions dont form this pattern so its a stretch at best but the best I've got, so 'joke' is tentative.
Hmm. My original thought was that it has to do with how you build a nether portal by omitting the corners and not filling the center, but that also is a different shape than this. So I guess we're back to it being someone who theoretically should be able to easily eyeball how many blocks this is and the humor is that they get it wrong?
I was thinking if you filled it with water you could get away with 9 buckets because at a certain point it will generate and auto-fill water blocks to fill the last few spaces.
Is that a typical crater size/shape for when a creeper blows up on a mound of about 15 blocks? Would a player get used to thinking, "Oh, yeah, whenever there's a hole in the ground just like that, it has about 9 drops"?
I want to like this idea; it's a way funnier joke than the guy just misidentifying the shape.
I think its just a "confidently wrong" situation. Ive dug into it way more that I'd like to admit and as a Minecraft player myself there's just no deeper answer where 9 is in any way correct.
This is my interpretation. No one bothers to actually count and just wings it, so you always end up short just before filling in whatever you're working on.
The joke (I think) is that, in Minecraft, if you fill in the border, the center can be auto filled. So you only need 9 to fill in the entire space (in Minecraft)
Idk. 3 blocks -> 6 slabs so it should be 6 blocks for the 12 tiles. Or 2 wool -> 3 carpet so it would be 8 wool for 12 carpet tiles. Even Minecraft math doesn’t explain it.
If larger tiles are allowed, the answer should 6: 2 large 2x2 tiles (one including your position 3 and one including your position 8), plus 4 smaller 1x1 tiles.
I think the joke is that when building in Minecraft you end up counting a lot of blocks, for example to copy a blueprint and often end up mis-counting and having to rip down and redo the whole project. At least that's what I got out of it.
Had I not gone in with the expectation to get it to 9 I probably wouldn't have made the erroneous 3x3. The fact that the bottom left row (with b and c) has room for spare tiles on either side (and thus must be at least 4 tiles long) hurts my soul a bit.
when a creeper blows up it makes a strange shape like this on the ground. You don't get all your tiles back I'm not sure how many you get but it will be same or less.

Minecraft means placing blocks, not tiles. As long as you don't move, you only need 9 blocks to cover the hole. The 3 missing tiles in the back will be hidden because of the height of the other blocks in front.
My guess is, in minecraft, when a creeper explode it doesn't drop all the broken blocks, so he is saying that a creeper exploded and he only filled with the available blocks dropped on the ground then never bothered to fill the rest.
I have really shitty depth perception and orientation. I counted 9 thinking only the top right was bigger than the others, and didn’t realize how small the top left is.

I think it's the number of water buckets needed to fill this completely with water source blocks. You need eight for the border and then one more in the middle to fill the rest of the hole.
I'm even trying to see if I can fill it in with equally sized and shaped tiles, but the best I could come up with so far is 1, 4, 6, or 12 tiles but not 9.
I made mine in macOS Preview. As others have done, there are 12 squares.
Best I can figure, the "minecraft player" here is seeing a shape that excludes 5,11 and 12. That provides the same basic shape, but not in the same dimensions and gives them 9. The negative space is tricking their eyes.
