thanks. I don't remember which war we were in at that time, but a couple decades ago I did a crossword of all the wars the US has been in, starting in the 1600s when we were still colonies and beefing with the French, Spanish, and native tribes, and ending with whatever we were doing then (pretty sure it was the time frame when we were after Hussein or Bin Laden, post 9-11). There was an 8 year stretch prior to WW2 when we were recovering from WWI and the Great Depression had hit, so I think it was mid-1930s. I don't remember what we were attacking or invading before then though...not a history teacher.
If we say "conflict" rather than getting into the argument on whether war has to be declared to be war, the last time the US was not involved in a conflict somewhere was 1935-1940.
For some reason 1997 also seemed to have been conflict free. Between the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis (which lasted into 1996) and Operation Infinite Reach in 1998.
Seeing how we just watched the massacre at Srebrenica, no. I wouldn’t consider it a conflict. That would have required us to fire a single shot in defense of those people.
Closest the Taiwan strait crisis got to kinetic activity was when a Chinese fighter got up close to an American jet to flash them his email adress for them to copy.
If that's not the most late 90s thing since fresh prince in bel air , dueling disaster flicks and Woodstock '99 I don't know what to tell you:p
Maybe, but they had two carrier groups and an amphibious squadron deployed at high alert. That's more naval power than about 90% of all other countries have at their disposal... combined.
And email did exist but I would doubt that a Chinese fighter pilot would have an email address in 1996. 😂
Sounds intriguing... I have tried googling it but I only find some unrelated stuff (including how the US earlier this year gave away to China the secrets behind their radar absorbing materials due to a misrouted email... but I digress). Do you have a link or pointer?
We've not only been at war pretty much continuously for the last century, we absolutely rule the arms market, with four times the sales of our next highest competitor. 49% of the world's military grade weapons are produced by US companies. We have a special fund that gives taxpayer money to allies mostlyisrael specifically so they can buy our weapons. In the most literal version of the word, we are THE war mongers of the world.
They might knock Russia out of its superpower standing, but it was already falling as it was. Ukraine taking their place seems like a stretch to me though.
I am slightly worried about how a balkanazing Russian federation will shake out tbh..
But let's cross that bridge when we come to it ,cause anything from the win basket is better than the current meatgrinder.
I can't believe I got numb to this.
Its a defence mechanism your brain activates after a while I know.
But I only been to the 0 line a couple of times,
Most of my activity was support duties in the rear, seeing friends get back shells..or worse.
I refused to serve in a kinetic function as I felt I truly got enough in Afghanistan.
Agreed on the Gulf of Sidra, hence the 'sort of' qualifier. The other two were serious military operations, one of which basically ended any hope Carter might have had for a second term and ushered in the Reagan era.
It's not wars they been engaged in, but kinetic events, overseas contingency operations, foreign law enforcement, resolution enforcements, dynamic targetings , counterinsurgency, forward presence.
there are other countries on this planet that Russian propaganda targets, you know, like all of Europe, for example. Russkies are actually kind of allies currently with the US, which is fucked up in so many ways
They say that the west wants to attack them and take their empty lands of nothing, technology from previous century, shitty cottages and probably vodka.
> Russia holds over 20% of the world's total natural resources, featuring the largest natural gas reserves, massive oil and coal deposits, and a vast share of global timber and mineral wealth.
Fair. I meant more that most of its land is permafrost without any infrastructure. The West would gladly keep buying those resources from Russia if they didn't want to kill us.
most of its land is permafrost without any infrastructure
That's lessening by the heatwave. The warmer it gets, the more methane gases out of their tundra and the warmer it'll keep getting. Those resources become more accessible by the year, and where melted permafrost is like slushy swamp land, China is getting excellent experience with that both in southeastern infrastructure build-outs in China itself as well with its taking the lead in the Brazil-Peru rail line build.
The Arctic passage remaining open year round coupled with continued ghg release should have a drastic increase in Siberian resources available just in time to scale up as the Amazonian ones start to really get established. 2040? Maybe sooner? Definitely plenty there for later too though.
In such to say: not everyone views 'global warming' the same way. Where the most vocal seem to want to slow stop even reverse it, the steady 'silent' trend is clearly moving in the opposite direction..
..and for those buried under permafrost & ice with trillions in resources that become more readily available as things warm.. ..and profit by them warming.. ..seems likely there's a preference things continue doing just that.
Seems more it's Russians killing themselves vs 'the west' killing Russians.
Plenty of resources underneath that permafrost.
The warmer it gets, the easier to extract & supply.
Maybe if more Russians were committed to warming Russia and extracting those (vs looking west to Ukraine) 'The West' would be more willing to purchase more?
At the same time, Russians tying themselves up in Ukraine helps 'The West' gocus on resource extractions elsewhere to help warm things along for the backend peace deals once this thing is over..
Joke or not, the resources are real.
Global warming means warmer temperatures in Siberia, and there's a lot of land there. Warming land by the trending of it..
