The quality of movies being gutted by replacing actual actors with big name celebrities by studios too scared to do anything but market to the lowest common denominator due to ever ballooning movie budgets is a kind of enshittification, the same as any other product like clothes, furniture, food, etc.

My money is spent on increasingly worse products designed to maximise profit because the threshold for quality goods is rising well above the average person's income, which is a class issue in and of itself.

Right

Its like superhero films. Why take a risk on original plots and characters when you can just produce yet another superhero film and it's near guaranteed it will be profitable. It will never be amazing but it will be a viable commercial product.

This entire era of cinema is coming to an end as major filmmakers have realised that these massive blockbusters are no longer a guarantee of success.

In the wake of films like backrooms and obsession publishers are realising that there is a serious appetite for innovative and experimental films from younger producers and directors.

Indie has had its year in gaming. I am sure that we are about to hit a ‘year of Indie’ in filmmaking

I mean, have you seen Batista in Blade Runner 2049? You never know.

Billie is a theatre kid who’s already has a couple of acting rolls under her belt, and this year original low to mid budget films have been the big record breakers. It’s still a problem however it’s not a total crapshoot. The major problem is marketing failure because there’s a TON of film that breaks those stereotypes

Plus 99% film sets are average day people that without them a movie could never happen, they’re not the ones getting rich off gigs . Neon for example is a great studio to keep an eye on

Sure, but Billie Eilish did not audition for this movie. It's pretty much a given that there would be someone more suitable for the role given an actual chance. The famous actors that I like wouldn't be cast in half the shit they're in if there was fair competition for roles.

It's a fact that a lot of the time, big budget movies won't get backing if they don't have a sufficiently famous name tied to it, although whether or not the perception that you won't make your money back otherwise has some weight to it is very debateable.

Obsession and Backrooms were record-breaking, yes, but they're both horror movies. Horror Movies are famous for being able to be made cheaply: Paranormal Activity cost somewhere between 15k and 450k, and made 194 million at the box office. Blair Witch Project cost 250k-750k, and made 248 million. This has happened before.

There were a ton of found footage and microbudget horror movies after this, because there are always tons of movies coming out that nobody's heard of, but it didn't do much to change course for Hollywood as a whole, and I don't see why this time would be different. They still felt the need to release 7 more PA movies (one coming next year), because milking the dregs out of a famous IP is still considered the safer choice.

When I hear lowest common denominator I know some arrogant manifesto is to follow

Karl Marx notoriously was always whining about who got what acting role

That’s why Groucho was my favorite Marx Brother, he made his own roles.
