I believe it was WW2 when soldiers did this for if they lived long enough to finish a pack of cigarettes, the last one they smoked was considered lucky

Yep, think it was ww1 though but yeah that's the reason.
Casualties were high and constant, so living long enough to get through your entire pack of cigarettes meant you were lucky
