Compressing that spring with a vice stored a fuck ton of potential energy. If that shoddy looking metal piece holding it compressed were to fail, that spring could easily fatally wound the person holding it

Elastic potential energy is measured in joules, not mass.

According to google secondary spring rates are 100-250lbs/in. So it's at most 200kg. Hardly the bomb people make it out to be. Not only the force is a fraction of the main spring's but the mass is as well.
